GENERAL
 
As A. Chau and J. Woodhouse were both indisposed due to illness, riding replacements were made in Race 6 as per the Stewards Race Day Summary.
 
As Apprentice M. Wishart was indisposed due to an injury sustained at the Dalby meeting on Saturday 31 August 2019, riding replacements were made in Races 3 and 5 as per the Stewards Race Day Summary.
 
Mr. A. Stephens was found guilty of a charge of improper conduct under AR. 228(b) in that whilst he was performing his role as a stablehand at the meeting today, and after being directed to have WANT TO BOLT remain on course by a Steward to allow swab samples to be taken from the gelding, he used profanities in conversation with that Steward. Mr. Stephens was fined $200. In determining penalty, Stewards took into consideration Mr. Stephens’ prior good record in relation to this rule.  
 
Race 1: AUSTRALIAN TRAINERS’ ASSOCIATION QTIS 3YO MAIDEN PLATE – 870M
 
BELASTRO – Slow to begin and then bumped shortly after the start. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
 
MIGHTY ROCKY – Slow to begin and then bumped shortly after the start.
 
WHISTLIN’ ARROW – Steadied to avoid heels near the 700m.
 
JOJO GO – Commenced to buck shortly after the start and lost considerable ground. Hung in despite the efforts of its rider whilst racing very greenly in the home straight causing interference to another runner. Trainer L. Hatch was advised that the filly must barrier trial to the satisfaction of Stewards prior to next racing.
 
SPALLINA – Checked to avoid heels passing the 200m when JOJO GO hung in despite the efforts of its rider.
 
Race 2: ATA SUPPORTS DARLING DOWNS MAIDEN H’CAP – 1640M
 
KNUCKLEBOX – Began awkwardly. Overraced in the early and middle stages. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
 
RABOLINI – After being caught wide in the early stages, jockey K. Yoshida permitted his mount to stride forward to obtain the leading position passing the 1400m and, as a result, settled further forward than anticipated. Laid in under pressure whilst weakening in the home straight.
 
KEYHOLE – Slow to begin. Raced ungenerously whilst being restrained in the middle stages.
 
GIVE HER ROOM – Disappointed for a run and was steadied near the 100m.
 
Race 3: ATA AUSTRALIAN TRAINERS’ TRUST MAIDEN PLATE – 1050M
 
DARK ROCKER – Disappointed for a run when HOT CORONA (G. Geran) shifted in approaching the 50m. Jockey G. Geran was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances in the future.
 
HOT CORONA – Laid in under pressure over the final 100m. Stewards questioned jockey G. Geran in relation to the gelding shifting wider on the track whilst rounding the home turn which presented a run to the inside for the eventual winner, HARRYANDTHETIGER. Jockey Geran advised that in the early and middle stages the gelding raced keenly which he attributed to it racing in blinkers for the first time. He added that, whilst leading during the race, he elected to race slightly off the fence, however as a result of overracing the gelding commenced to weaken approaching the home turn and shifted out marginally. Jockey Geran advised that, as a result of racing slightly off the fence and the marginal shift, HARRYANDTHETIGER was able to obtain a run to his mount’s inside. Stewards noted the explanation.
 
TOP TINKA – Hung out whilst racing with its head in the air for some distance in the early stages, and again near the 500m.
 
Race 4: PRYDE’S EASIFEED CLASS 4 PLATE – 1640M
 
SIR ROTHEWAY – After being caught wide in the early stages, Apprentice N. Keal permitted his mount to stride forward to obtain a position outside the leader approaching the 1000m.
 
FAST ARLI – Raced with its head in the air whilst being restrained in the early stages.
 
TUDOR SUNRISE – Jockey J. Bayliss was reprimanded for excessive use of the whip prior to the 100m. In determining penalty, Stewards took into consideration the totality of jockey Bayliss’ whip use.
 
SHEEZINAJAM – The training partnership was fined $100 for the late declaration of J. Oliver as rider.
 
CLOWN IN THE MOON – The trainer’s representative was advised that the mare, which finished tailed off, will now have its nomination refused at TAB meetings until such time as its country form improves.
 
Race 5: TAB BENCHMARK 62 H’CAP – 1300M
 
MAHARNI – Apprentice C. Frater-Hill was reprimanded for excessive use of the whip prior to the 100m. In determining penalty, Stewards took into consideration the totality of Apprentice Frater-Hill’s whip use.
 
THE BIG HOUSE – Overraced in the early and middle stages and proved difficult to restrain. Apprentice A. Thompson reported to Stewards that it was his intention to ride the horse with cover today if circumstances permitted, however the gelding commenced to overrace for a considerable distance from shortly after the start and, despite his efforts to restrain, established a significant leading position whilst setting a faster than anticipated tempo. Having viewed the patrol footage, Stewards were satisfied that in the early and middle stages Apprentice Thompson had attempted to restrain the gelding but was unable to do so, and therefore noted his explanation.
 
SOGNI – A post-race veterinary examination of the mare, which tailed off, revealed no significant findings. Jockey R. Goltz could offer no explanation for the disappointing performance.
 
ACCOUNTANT – Raced 3 wide without cover throughout.
 
Race 6: NEIL MANSELL TRANSPORT CLASS 2 H’CAP – 2175M
 
RICHEST – Commenced to weaken from the 800m and proved disappointing. Jockey E. Ljung could offer no explanation for the disappointing performance other than the gelding may have come to the end of its preparation. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings. Trainer J. Wallace advised that it is now his intention to send the horse for an immediate spell.
 
WICKED HEIGHTS – After being caught wide in the early stages, jockey J. Bayliss permitted his mount to stride forward to obtain a position outside the leader near the 1200m. A post-race veterinary examination of the gelding, which tailed off, revealed no significant findings. Trainer P. Jenkins advised that it is now his intention to send the horse for an immediate spell.
 
MOSSERATI – Overraced in the early and middle stages. Jockey K. Yoshida advised that, in his opinion, the gelding overracing throughout the race was the major contributing factor to its poor performance.
 
EXPERT REPLY – After being caught wide, Beau Appo permitted his mount to stride forward to obtain the leading position near the 800m.
 
WENDOUREE RED – As J. Woodhouse was not attending the meeting today due to illness, Stewards permitted Apprentice C. Frater-Hill to be substituted as rider when no other senior rider was available. Slow to begin. Momentarily held up on the heels of a tiring runner near the 500m.
 
Race 7: TRACKSIDE PHOTOGRAPHY ROSES PRELUDE 1 BENCHMARK 75 H’CAP – 1110M
 
DAZZLING RED – Blundered on jumping away.
 
WANT TO BOLT – Trainer G. Stephens was fined $100 for failing to produce the horse’s Thoroughbred Identification Card. As the gelding had drifted significantly in the betting from the morning of the race until the start time, Stewards ordered that a veterinary examination be carried out on the horse upon its arrival at the barriers. The gelding was subsequently passed fit to start. Following the race, as Stewards were of the view that the gelding had performed disappointingly despite finishing 4th, Apprentice N. Keal and Trainer G. Stephens were questioned in relation to the performance. Apprentice N. Keal advised that his instructions were to either lead today if possible or, if DAZZLING RED which was drawn to his mount’s inside was intent to lead, to attempt to obtain cover during the race. Apprentice Keal advised that from shortly after the start he had formed the view that it was the better option to obtain cover on the gelding, which he was able to do, and the gelding travelled strongly throughout in a position behind the leader. He went on to say that, when placed under pressure from the 500m, the gelding failed to respond to his riding and ran on only fairly in the home straight. Trainer G. Stephens expressed disappointment in the performance of the gelding, which he advised had been working well in preparation for today’s race. He added that the gelding had been successful in a jumpout in preparation for today’s race and, whilst not fully fit, he was of the view that the gelding had a sufficient fitness base for it to be competitive, if not win, today. Mr. Stephens advised that the only tangible explanation which he could put forward for the disappointing performance was that the gelding had been unplaced at all three of its prior first up starts. Whilst noting the explanation, Stewards advised Mr. Stephens that they would undertake a review of the betting in respect of the race, and should any discrepancy be identified, they reserve the right to continue investigating the horse’s performance. A post-race veterinary examination of the gelding revealed no significant findings. A swab sample was taken from the horse immediately following the race. Additionally, Mr. Stephens was advised that the gelding would be required to remain on course for a period of time following the final race at which time a second swab sample was collected from the horse.

Race 8: WESTON KITCHENS & BATHROOMS CLASS 2 PLATE – 1110M
 
RUN PAM RUN – Stood flat-footed as the start was effected and lost ground.
 
TEQUILA BOOM – Trainer K. Kemp was fined $100 for failing to produce the horse’s Thoroughbred Identification Card.
 
CUBAN SAGA – Steadied to avoid heels shortly after the start. Steadied to avoid heels near the 900m and again near the 800m.
