Race 1: HAPPY 30TH BIRTHDAY ALEXANDRA QTIS 3YO CLASS 1 H’CAP – 1000M

GENERAL WITT – Laid in under pressure in the home straight.

JELVISS – Raced 3 wide without cover throughout.

SECONDOFMAY – When racing in restricted room near the 900m, the filly was reluctant to hold its position inside runners and, as a result, lost ground.

TAPA BONNIE – Began awkwardly.

SAY HAYA – Jumped in the air at the start. Raced greenly whilst under pressure in the home straight.

Race 2: PRYDE’S EASIFEED MAIDEN PLATE – 870M

SNIP OF GIN – Slow to begin. Raced greenly between runners passing the 600m. Momentarily held up rounding the home turn. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be lame in the near fore leg. Trainer M. Boland was advised that the horse will require a veterinary clearance prior to resuming racing.

JONDY ROCKET – Slow to begin. Laid in in the early stages of the home straight.

RUFFIN’ IT – Bumped on the hindquarters by another runner near the 600m.

SHEEZE DELISH – Steadied to avoid the heels of WRITE THE RULES (E. Ljung) which shifted in when not completely clear near the 700m. Jockey Ljung was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances in the future.

SPALLINA – Slow to begin. Momentarily steadied to avoid the heels of JONDY ROCKET which laid in near the 200m. Apprentice A. Patis reported that her saddle shifted forward on jumping away which placed her at a disadvantage for the remainder of the race.

WRITE THE RULES – Stewards permitted E. Ljung to replace Apprentice B. Nothdurft as rider. Stewards accepted Apprentice Nothdurft’s explanation regarding his inability to fulfil this engagement. Jockey E. Ljung was fined $200 for weighing in in excess of half a kilogram overweight. In determining penalty, Stewards took into consideration jockey Ljung’s prior good record in relation to this rule.

Race 3: LIVING GEMS BM75 H’CAP – 1850M

KUTTAMURRA AL – Raced 3 wide without cover throughout. Steadied to avoid heels near the 150m. On return to scale, Apprentice A. Patis expressed disappointment in the performance of the gelding and advised that, despite racing wide, the gelding came off the bit a considerable distance from home and had failed to run on as she had expected. A post-race veterinary examination of the gelding revealed no significant findings.

BENICO’S PRINCE – After being slightly slow to begin, the gelding was then further hampered when tightened for room. When questioned by Stewards in relation to the seemingly improved performance, Trainer P. Kings advised that jockey J. Byrne had reported following the horse’s last start that it was reluctant to stretch out on the firm track on that occasion. He added that, for this reason, he elected to return the horse to racing at Toowoomba which, in his opinion, is a track which has more natural give, and where the horse has previously been successful on a number of occasions.

BERNIE’S TIGER – Raced keenly in the early stages and proved difficult to restrain before being checked off heels approaching the 1400m.

LOTZA – Jockey N. Tomizawa reported that the gelding raced one paced today, and was under pressure from the 800m and proved disappointing. He added that, in his opinion, the gelding races best when able to lead in its races, however when MARLAHN set a strong tempo in the early stages, his mount was unable to obtain this position. A post-race veterinary examination of the gelding revealed no significant findings.

MARLAHN – After being caught wide in the early stages, the gelding was ridden forward to obtain the leading position near the 1500m.

IN YOUR ELEMENT – After being slightly slow to begin, the mare was then further hampered when tightened for room. Stewards asked jockey Beau Appo to comment with respect to his riding in the home straight. Jockey Appo advised that when racing in the mare’s customary rearward position approaching the home turn, he elected to ride for luck rather than shift very wide on the home turn to secure clear running. He advised that, as a result, his mount was momentarily held up rounding the home turn, and then in the early stages of the home straight was disappointed for a run, which he attempted to obtain between BENICO’S PRINCE and LOTZA, when each of those runners shifted ground. He went on to say that, from this point, he elected to shift to the outside of LOTZA to obtain clear running, however when that runner shifted ground outwards, his mount was again disappointed for a run. He added that he elected to shift to the outside of the heels of BERNIE’S TIGER at which point he was able to secure clear running in the run to the finish. Jockey Appo accepted that whilst a run did ultimately present to the inside of BERNIE’S TIGER which he could have obtained, he had already committed to a shift to the outside at that point, and therefore did not take advantage of the run which presented forward of him. Having reviewed the patrol footage, Stewards noted jockey Appo’s explanation.

Race 4: QUEENSLAND ELECTRICAL SOLUTIONS CLASS 1 H’CAP – 1200M

FAT MAX – Raced wide with cover throughout.

MR MISUNDERSTOOD – Improved onto heels and was checked at the 100m.

MY BELLY BUTTON – Began awkwardly, and was then bumped shortly after the start. Held up and unable to improve for some distance approaching and rounding the home turn. Raced greenly in the home straight.

BEL BEAU – Overraced in the early and middle stages and proved difficult to restrain and, as a result, was unable to obtain cover and raced 3 wide throughout.

BY THE LAW – Steadied from heels whilst racing keenly leaving the 800m.

Race 5: AUDI CENTRE TOOWOOMBA MAIDEN H’CAP – 1300M

HEARTS LIKE OURS – Significantly tightened for room at the start and lost ground.

WEALTH’N’POWER – Jockey K. Yoshida reported that his mount commenced to hang out from the 600m and, as a result, shifted wider on the track in the home straight.

WHERE’S THE MONEY – Slow to begin. Laid out rounding the home turn.

MISS DYNAMIC – Raced in restricted room for a short distance when tightened shortly after the start. Laid out rounding the home turn.

Race 6: ENTERPRISE LEGAL BM62 H’CAP – 2150M

CATCH ME LATAR – Raced keenly in the early stages. Held up approaching the home turn.

CYCLONE PATH – Began awkwardly. Raced wide until a point near the 1500m. Forced to take evasive action and shift wider on the track near the 350m to avoid fallen riders.

WESTBROOK WARRIOR – Raced wide from near the 800m.

CAPTAIN CRUMPET – Steadied near the 150m to avoid a riderless horse.

C. Frater and N. Thomas, who were dislodged from their respective mounts near the 350m, were both assessed by Queensland Ambulance Officers and subsequently transported to hospital for further observation.

Stewards opened an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding C. Frater and N. Thomas being dislodged from their respective mounts near the 350m. After taking initial evidence from a number of jockeys, Stewards adjourned the inquiry to a date and time to be fixed.

To enable a replacement ambulance to arrive on course, the start times of Races 7 and 8 were amended as follows:

Race 7 – 5.20pm
Race 8 – 6.00pm

Race 7: TAB CLASS 4 H’CAP – 1300M

THE BIG HOUSE – Raced keenly in the early stages. When questioned by Stewards in relation to the seemingly disappointing performance, jockey N. Tomizawa advised that his mount enjoyed a comfortable run in a handy position throughout, and based on the manner in which it was travelling, he felt that the gelding would be competitive at the conclusion of the race. He went on to say, however, that when approaching the home turn, the gelding did not quicken as he had anticipated and failed to run on in the home straight and, in his opinion, proved disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination of the gelding revealed no significant findings.

SPIRIT’S PRIDE – Jumped with its head in the air and lost ground. After being caught wide in the back straight, the horse was restrained to a rearward position to obtain cover leaving the 800m. Had some difficulty obtaining clear running near the 100m.

CHARLOTTE’S HEART – Momentarily held up rounding the home turn.

LITTLE JOHN – Connections advised that it would be the intention for the horse to be ridden further forward in the field today if circumstances permit. After beginning well, the mare was caught wide in the early stages and, as a result, was restrained to a position closer to the rail in the second half of the field.

GREY SKIES – Jockey S. Lacy reported that her mount raced keenly in the early and middle stages and proved difficult to restrain.

DAISY’S APART – Raced 3 wide without cover throughout.

THUMBS UP – Slow to begin. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to have bled from one nostril. Trainer K. Kemp was advised that the horse must perform satisfactorily in a 1000m gallop in the presence of a Steward prior to resuming racing.

Race 8: K&R PLUMBING SUPPLIES CLASS 2 H’CAP – 1000M

The start of this race was delayed to enable the broadcast of an interstate event.

BRIDYN MAY – Raced 3 wide without cover throughout. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.

RED WEDDING – Steadied to avoid heels near the 900m.

SPARTAN JET – Slow to begin. Steadied from heels near the 550m. Lost the near side winker at the 400m.

STUDLY ROOSTER – The gelding, which was resuming from a significant spell, underwent a pre-race veterinary examination and was passed fit to start. Raced 3 wide with cover throughout.
