STEWARDS REPORT

TOOWOOMBA TURF CLUB – SATURDAY 1 AUGUST 2020

WEATHER – FINE
TRACK RATING – SOFT 5
RAIL – 0.5M
PENETROMETER – 5.17

OFFICIALS

Chairman of Stewards – R. Hitchener
Stewards – J. Childs, L. Carvosso, B. McErlean
Clerk of Scales – A. Cuckson
Judge – S. Fahey, M. Fahey
Veterinarian – Dr. E. Hamilton
Swab Attendants – R. Burchmann, D. McDonald
Starter – T. Woodham
Stewards Secretary – M. Weir

GENERAL

As Apprentice M. Wishart was unable to attend the meeting today due to injury, riding replacements were made as per the Stewards Race Day Summary.

Race 1: NATIONAL JOCKEY CELEBRATION DAY COLTS, GELDINGS & ENTIRES BENCHMARK 55 H’CAP – 1000M

TRENGGANU – Laid in under pressure from the 400m.

ABITOFACARD – A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be mildly lame in its near hind leg.

CALCULATED RISK – Laid out rounding the home turn.

DARCI’S MONEY – As the horse is 12 years old and was resuming from a two year absence from racing, it underwent a pre-race veterinary examination and was cleared to start. Raced wide without cover for the majority.

STRIVE TO SUCCEED – Raced 3 wide without cover throughout.

LEROY ROCKS – Knuckled shortly after the start almost dislodging its rider and, as a result, lost significant ground.

Stewards inquired into an incident near the 950m in which ABITOFACARD and NEAREST THE PINS were both tightened for room to the inside of OAKFIELD GERONIMO which shifted in when not completely clear. Jockey G. Geran, the rider of OAKFIELD GERONIMO, was reprimanded as a result of this incident.

Jockey L. Tilley, the rider of CALCULATED RISK, was charged with careless riding under AR131(a) in that he permitted his mount to shift in approaching the 900m when insufficiently clear of OAKFIELD GERONIMO, NEAREST THE PINS and ABITOFACARD resulting in all of those runners being tightened for room. In this incident, OAKFIELD GERONIMO had to be eased by its rider and OAKFIELD GERONIMO was checked and lost ground. After giving consideration to jockey L. Tilley’s submissions in defence of the charge, Stewards could not be comfortably satisfied that jockey Tilley was solely responsible for this incident, bearing in mind that jockey G. Geran, the rider of OAKFIELD GERONIMO, had been reprimanded for causing tightening to runners shortly prior to this incident and, for this reason, Stewards gave jockey Tilley the benefit of the doubt and elected not to proceed with the charge of careless riding. Nevertheless, jockey L. Tilley was reprimanded as a result of this incident.

Stewards opened an inquiry into jockey R. Goldsbury’s riding of ABITOFACARD in the home straight. After hearing submissions from jockey R. Goldsbury, Stewards issued her with a charge under AR129(2) which reads ‘a rider must take all reasonable and permissible measures throughout the race to ensure that the rider’s horse is given full opportunity to win or to obtain the best possible place in the field’. Prior to entering a plea to the charge, jockey Goldsbury sought an adjournment in relation to this matter. Given the serious nature of the charge, Stewards acceded to her request and adjourned the inquiry to Saturday 8 August 2020.

Race 2: SHEPPARD EARTHMOVING FILLIES AND MARES BENCHMARK 55 H’CAP – 1000M

The start of this race was delayed when KIRRA LASS, which became fractious in the barriers, underwent a veterinary examination and was cleared to start.

ESSAKA – After being caught very wide in the early stages, the mare was allowed to stride forward by its rider to obtain a position closer to the rail leaving the 700m, however it was forced to race 3 wide without cover throughout.

KIRRA LASS – Began awkwardly.

MISS HOW LONG – Hung out in the middle stages.

Race 3: TOOWOOMBA TRUCK SPARES CLASS 1 PLATE – 1200M

MR MISUNDERSTOOD – Improved onto heels and was steadied for some distance when the pace steadied near the 1200m.

POOLENZO – Slow to begin. Apprentice A. Patis reported that when her mount was racing keenly passing the 1300m her saddle shifted forward which placed her at a disadvantage and, for that reason, she allowed the gelding to stride forward at that point.

PRINCELY SUM – Hung out in the middle stages. Held up approaching and passing the 500m.

STRYKING EMERALD – Overraced in the early and middle stages.

LAMMA HILTON – Began awkwardly and lost ground.

POGO – Commenced to yield ground from the 900m and was retired from the race by its rider. A post-race veterinary examination revealed that the gelding had sustained a catastrophic bleeding attack. The horse was subsequently euthanased on humane grounds. A swab sample was taken from the gelding.

RED MONKEY – Overraced in the early and middle stages.

SCHWARZY – When the pace steadied near the 1200m, Apprentice C. Bayliss permitted his mount to stride forward.

BELLITA – Hung out rounding the home turn.

Race 7: MOORE LEWIS & PARTNERS MAIDEN PLATE – 1300M

Stewards permitted jockey R. Palmer to replace Apprentice M. Wishart as the rider of KNUCKLEBOX when no other suitable apprentice rider was available.

Jockey R. Goldsbury was substituted as the rider of ENJOY THE SHOW when jockey L. Tilley was unable to fulfil his engagement. Stewards accepted jockey L. Tilley’s explanation regarding his inability to fulfil his engagement.

BILL OF RIGHTS – Held up and unable to improve for some distance approaching the 500m.

ENJOY THE SHOW – Failed to muster early speed and lost ground.

MOTION SENSOR – Raced 3 wide without cover throughout.
