Race 3: GREENRIDGE CONNECT BENCHMARK 60 Handicap1850 metres ZAMZARA – Began awkwardly. Stewards questioned trainer S Dwyer (Jnr) in relation to the seemingly improved performance of the mare. Mr Dwyer advised that the mare, which was 3rd up from a spell in tonight’s event, in his opinion was suited tonight with the step up in distance. He added that the mare had been racing in better company at its previous starts in this preparation and therefore when stepping back to an inferior field to which it had been competing in his opinion was well placed in tonight’s event. Mr Dwyer went on to say that the mare had worked well in preparation for tonight’s event and based on all these factors had expected an improved performance. MAEVILA RULER – Raced wide without cover throughout. Stewards questioned Apprentice T Townsend into the reasons for her failing to ride her mount out for a number of strides near the 50m before again placing her mount under pressure over the concluding stages. Apprentice Townsend advised that the gelding had had a tendency to gradually shift in when placed under pressure in the home straight and for that reason near the 50m elected to stop riding her mount out and straighten it at that point. Apprentice Townsend went on to say that after straightening her mount despite this her mount continued to shift in when placed under pressure over the concluding stages. Stewards noted the explanation. PRINCESS SPARKLES – Raced in restricted room near the 1600m and lost ground. Raced with its head in the air whilst being restrained near the 1300m. Deductions applicable to bets placed on winner and placegetters prior to 7:28pm:5 cents in the dollar for the win8 cent in the dollar for the place of winner6 cents in the dollar for 2nd place5 cents in the dollar for 3rd place Trainer L Hatch will be advised that a warning would be placed against the gelding’s pre-race behaviour. HEART ATTACK – Began awkwardly. Stewards questioned Apprentice T Townsend in relation to the tactics adopted on the gelding. Of concern to Stewards was Apprentice Townsend’s decision to shift from a position on the rail to a 3 wide position near the 900m. Apprentice Townsend advised that her instructions were to ride the gelding aggressively in the early stages however if crossed to afford the gelding clear galloping room as the gelding races best when able to maintain a rhythm throughout the event. Apprentice Townsend advised that in light of the instructions issued, after being crossed by JONDY ROCKET, she elected to shift to a position 1 off the fence and further when racing in a trailing position behind EXCEED ROCK she therefore elected to shift to a 3 wide position from the 900m. Therefore, in her opinion, she had ridden in compliance with the instruction issued by trainer N Gay. Trainer N Gay confirmed the instructions issued to Apprentice Townsend however advised that after shifting to a position 1 off the fence trailing EXCEED ROCK it would have been his preference for apprentice Townsend to maintain this position given the tempo of the event and that EXCEED ROCK was one of the fancied runners in the event. Stewards advised apprentice Townsend that despite the instructions issued it would have been more advantageous for her to maintain the trailing position behind EXCEED ROCK rather than shifting to a 3 wide position without cover. Stewards further advised Apprentice Townsend, that whilst every endeavour should be made to ride to the trainer’s instructions, she should always ride her mounts to their advantage given the unfolding circumstances of the event and on this occasion she had erred in not maintaining a position trailing EXCEED ROCK. Stewards further advised Mr Gay that when engaging an inexperienced apprentice rider to be mindful of the specific nature of the instructions issued so as to not allow the apprentice to form the view that the specific instructions issued must be followed at all cost.THE CARPENTER – Forced wider on the track by another runner passing the 900m and as a consequence raced wide for the remainder.
