Stewards opened an inquiry into the findings of the Queensland Racing Integrity Commissions Integrity Investigation Team (IIT). After taking evidence from licensed trainer Mr Peter Kings, members of the IIT Mr Simon Fletcher and Mr Scott Heidke, Mr Kings was found guilty to a breach of AR.231(1)(a) which reads: A person must not: (a) commit or commission an act of cruelty to a horse, or be in possession of any article or thing which, in the opinion of the Stewards, is capable of inflicting cruelty to a horse. The specifics of the charge being that Mr Peter Kings, as a licensed trainer, had in his possession at his registered stables modified spurs, that in the opinion of the stewards, were capable of inflicting cruelty to a horse. Mr Kings was subsequently fined $1000. In determining penalty stewards took into consideration Mr Kings extensive training history, prior good record in relation to this rule, personal circumstances, and forthright evidence. Against this, stewards also considered the seriousness of the breach, the negative impact that such actions have against the racing industry and the need for penalties to serve as a deterrent. Mr Kings was advised of his appeal rights.
