QUEENSLANDRACING INTEGRITY COMMISSION STEWARDS REPORT TOOWOOMBA TURF CLUB TOOWOOMBA – SATURDAY 05th MARCH 2022 WEATHER – FINE TRACK RATING – SOFT 6/SOFT 5 following Race 2RAIL – TRUEPENETROMETER – 5.36 OFFICIALS Chairman of Stewards – R HitchenerStewards – J Childs, B Cooke, C Warren, C Simpson, P KennedyClerk of Scales – A. Lewindon Starter – T Woodham SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT From Rockhampton 4/3/2022 Race 6: Stewards acceded to a request from Jockey M. Murphy to change his suspension dates for a careless riding suspension incurred at this meeting to as follows: 12 days – commencing midnight 6/3/2022 and to expire at midnight 18/3/2022. GENERAL Stewards approved the following overweight allowances at today’s meeting- Race 6 – OZARK – B Thornton +1/2kgRace 8- GEMELON BOLT- B Thornton +1/2kgRace 9- GOGOL- B Thornton +1/2kg Stewards accepted the explanations of trainers in relation to any late rider notifications at today’s meeting. Race 1: STRADBROKE CALCUTTA 9 JUNE BENCHMARK 90 Handicap 1625 metres TAMILAIDE – Began awkwardly. Laid in when placed under pressure in the home straight. TUTELAGE – As Apprentice K. Wilson-Taylor could only claim one kilogram of his two-kilogram allowance, and there was no other suitable apprentice available on course at the time of this event, he was permitted to ride the gelding. Subsequently apprentice Wilson-Taylor was fined $300 under AR143(14)(a). DEEP SCEIVA – Hung out rounding the home turn and as a result shifted wider on the track. GROUP THINK – Threw its head in the air shortly after the start and as a result was restrained to a rearward position. Jockey J. Byrne could offer no explanation for the below market expectation performance of the gelding which he advised failed to quicken from the 600m. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. Following the event, a swab sample was taken. WARP SPEED – Began awkwardly. Race 2: XXXX DRY QTIS JEWEL PRELUDE 2YO Colts & Geldings Plate 1100 metres COCOBREW EXPRESS – Raced three wide without cover throughout. REFUEL – Laid in when placed under pressure in the home straight. EXECUTIVE STRESS – Near the 100m, was steadied when awkwardly placed at heels. TOBA – Raced greenly during the event. FLYING RUPERT – When asked to comment on the below market expectation performance, Jockey J. Byrne reported that the gelding, which was having its first start today, began only fairly as opposed to its official trial leading into today’s event, and as a result, he was obliged to ride the gelding along in the early stages to obtain the leading position. Jockey Byrne also added that after travelling well during the middle stages the gelding failed to quicken as he had expected when placed under pressure rounding the home turn and ran on only fairly in the home straight. Jockey Byrne was also of the opinion that the gelding would derive a significant benefit from the race experience of todays event being that it was having its first start today. Trainer T. Gollan was of the same opinion as jockey Byrne and advised that he would review how the gelding pulls up following todays event before making a determination on its current preparation. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. FOUR MILE LANE – Slow into stride. Race 3: MAGIC MILLIONS QTIS SALES MARCH 21-22 QTIS JEWELPRELUDE 2YO Fillies P 1100 metres Prior to this event the track was upgraded to a Soft (5). HONKYTONK DIVA – Leaving the 800m, was steadied when awkwardly placed between runners. At the 400m attempted to shift out to improve however was prevented from doing so by UTAH NASH and as a result was forced to shift to the inside to secure clear running. BETTER TIMES – Slow to begin. Improved onto heels and was steadied when leaving the 800m. HEROIC INSTINCT – Slow to begin. Raced three wide throughout. STELLARASHI – Bumped on jumping. Raced three wide without cover until a point leaving the 600m. UTAH NASH – Bumped on jumping. Race 4: CASCADE BENCHMARK 90 Handicap 2000 metres The start was delayed when STARDOME lost a near hind plate at the barriers and as a result required farrier attention. HAPPY GO PLUCKY – Began awkwardly. SEAT OF POWER – Began awkwardly. Momentarily steadied near the 450m. Laid in over the concluding stages. When questioned in relation to settling further back than anticipated apprentice K. Wilson-Taylor reported that the gelding began only fairly and was ridden along in the early stages in an attempt to obtain a forward position. Apprentice K. Wilson-Taylor added that when it was evident that despite his urgings, he was going to be unable to obtain a forward position, he elected to obtain a position one off the fence in a mid-field position after passing the winning post on the first occasion. Apprentice K. Wilson-Taylor further added that the gelding then travelled only reasonably during the run and as a result was shuffled back in the field before being hard ridden at the 800m to improve. Apprentice Wilson-Taylor went on to say that in response to his hard riding and when shifting to the outside of runners to improve, the gelding responded to his riding and was able to finish the race off well. Stewards noted the explanation. OUR CANDIDATE – Began awkwardly. When attempting to secure clear running rounding the home turn shifted out and bumped VICTORY EIGHT. HUMBOLT CURRENT – Tightened for room at the start. Near the 400m momentarily steadied when racing to the inside of HAPPY GO PLUCKY which shifted in. VICTORY EIGHT – Improved onto heels approaching the 1100m and as a result shifted out resulting in the gelding racing three wide without cover for the remainder. NEMINGAH – Bumped on jumping. A post-race veterinary examination revealed gelding to be displaying signs of heat stress. LADY SOLERNO – Near the 50m, steadied when awkwardly placed at heels. Race 5: STRADBROKE SEASON ON SALE NOW Class 3 Plate 1625 metres ALATAR – Near the 1400m clipped heels and blundered when ALWAYS ON SHOW shifted out marginally after being crossed by VALLEY OF DREAMS. From this point was obliged to race three wide for the remainder. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be lame in the off-fore leg and to be displaying signs of heat stress. The trainer’s representative was advised the horse will require a veterinary clearance prior to returning to racing. DEALMAKER – After beginning well settled further forward than anticipated. MOSSHIKI – Apprentice J. Lloyd was fined $700 under AR132(7)(a)(ii) for his using his whip on more than 5 occasions prior to the 100m. ALWAYS ON SHOW – Was forced to shift out marginally after being crossed by VALLEY OF DREAMS near the 1400m. ISABELLA'S SPRING – Slow to begin. HEAVENLY JOURNEY – Raced three wide from the 800m. Race 6: SKY RACING TATTERSALL'S MEMBER'S CUP 1625 metres PROFIT – Apprentice K. Wilson-Taylor reported that PROFIT sweated up uncharacteristically in the enclosure prior to the event and in his opinion travelled reasonably in the run. He added the gelding failed to quicken as he expected from the 500m and ran on only fairly in the home straight. Apprentice K. Wilson-Taylor was fined $500 under AR132(7)(a)(ii) for his use of the whip on more than 5 occasions prior to the 100m. RED CHASE – After being caught wide in the early stages was restrained to obtain a position one off the fence at the rear of the field near the 1200m. SEA RAIDER– Race keenly in the middle stages and as a result shifted three wide near the 1100m. Raced wide for the remainder. TAHLAYLA – Jumped with its head in the air. At a point approaching the 400m, was placed in restricted room and checked to avoid the heels of SEA RAIDER which shifted in. At a subsequent inquiry Jockey S. Thornton the rider of SEA RAIDER was found guilty of a charge careless riding under AR131(a) in that at a point near the 400m she failed to make sufficient effort to prevent her mount from shifting in resulting in TAHLAYLA being tightened for room and checked to avoid the heels of SEA RAIDER. Jockey Thornton’s license to ride in races was suspended for a period of eight days to commence midnight 13/3/2022 and to conclude midnight 21/3/2022. In determining penalty stewards took into consideration Jockey Thornton’s exemplary careless riding record. OZARK - Slow to begin. Race 7: BRC EVENT PLUS MEMBERSHIP BENCHMARK 72 Handicap 1100 metres Correct weight was delayed to allow Jockey’s L. Cassidy and S. Lacy the riders of the respective dead heated runners to view the photo finish image. Having had the opportunity to review the image, both riders were satisfied with the judge’s decision of a dead heat and subsequently correct weight was declared. SMART IMAGE – For some distance approaching the 100m, raced in restricted room whilst attempting to secure a narrow run. WINSIDE – Laid out when placed under pressure in the home straight. FIFTEEN ROUNDS – Steadied from heels at the 900m. MISCHIEF MANAGED – Over the final 50m, was forced wider when awkwardly placed at the heels of WINSIDE which shifted out under pressure. Jockey S. Lacy the rider of WINSIDE was advised to exercise for care. TRIPLE ARROW – Raced wide from the 700m. TORUN – Began awkwardly. Near the 900m, was steadied awkwardly placed at heels whilst laying in. Race 8: ENCRYPTION FIRST CROP YEARLINGS QTIS JEWEL PRELUDE3YO Handicap 1100 metres PRINCE OF BOOM - Trainer R Heathcote reported in the days prior to the meeting that the gelding had underwent a tie-back procedure subsequent to last racing. LEGAL ESPRIT – Tightened for room at the start. BLACKJACK BOOM – Raced in restricted room over the final 100m. Jockey Fradd reported that in his opinion BLACKJACK BOOM was not suited by the tight turning and undulating nature of the Toowoomba circuit. SELF INDULGENT – Bumped on jumping. Jockey S. Collett reported that the filly failed to travel strongly during the event and when placed under pressure failed to respond to her riding and in her opinion was disappointing. Trainer T. Gollan also expressed disappointment with the performance however could offer no tangible explanation. Mr Gollan added that in light of today’s performance he would have the filly scoped and should any abnormalities be detected he would report such findings to the stewards. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a poor post-race recovery. BARISTASISTA - Raced wide with cover for the majority. Steadied from heels near the 300m. FROSTY MANGO - Near the 1000m was momentarily placed in restricted room and eased. ZUMA CALIFORNIA – Began awkwardly. Raced three without cover for the majority. MISHANI SNIPER – Began awkwardly. Raced in restricted room over the final 100m. GENERAL WOLFFE – Slow to begin. Race 9: SKY RACING OPEN Handicap 1300 metres SAMBRO – Improved onto heels approaching the 50m and was obliged to shift out. VINCO – Slow to begin. Laid in under pressure in the home straight proving difficult to ride out. HONORABLE SPIRIT – Tightened for room at the start and lost ground. STUTTERING – Tightened for room at the start and lost ground and as a consequence settled further back than anticipated. Race 10: TAB VENUE MODE Class 6 Handicap 1200 metres TUMBLER RIDGE – Near the 900m improved onto heels and was steadied. Apprentice J. Lloyd was fined $800 under AR132(7)(a)(ii) for his use of the whip on more than 5 occasions prior to the 100m. TRAMONTO – Approaching the 1000m, whist racing keenly, was steadied to avoid heels. Raced three wide with cover throughout. Checked to avoid heels near the 400m when INGEAR which was racing to the inside was bumped and forced outwards by MONTENEGRO MAN which was bumped and forced wider by SHAMROCK LU which sifted out when attempting to secure clear running. Jockey J. Byrne the rider of SHAMROCK LU was reprimanded for careless riding under AR131(a).Forced wider on the track by another runner near the 300m. BIG BAD BRUCE – Jockey B. Thompson advised that when placing the gelding under pressure rounding the home turn, he was of the opinion that the gelding may have faltered behind and for that reason he elected to ease the gelding down in the home straight. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant abnormalities. Stewards will follow up with Trainer T Gollan in relation to the post-race recovery of the gelding in the days subsequent to today’s event. INGEAR – Began awkwardly and was then bumped shortly after the start. After being caught four wide was ridden forward by its rider passing the 900m to obtain a position three wide near the 800m. Steadied to avoid heels near the 300m. Jockey S. Collett reported that in her opinion being forced to race wide throughout the event, combined with receiving two pieces of interference rounding the home turn, were the major contributing factor to the poor performance of the mare. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant abnormalities.
