As Jockey’s L Tilley and N Evans were not riding at tonight’s meeting due to injury replacements were made as per Stewards race day summary. Jockey’s Tilley and Evans were advised they would require a medical clearance prior to again being permitted to ride in a race.

Race 1: FOCUS HR COLTS, GELDINGS & ENTIRES BENCHMARK 62 HANDICAP 1000m

The start of the event was delayed slightly to allow a section of rail on the outside fence at the course proper crossing to be re-positioned.

POLYLITHIC- Was declared a late scratching at 7:45am on veterinary advice. Trainer M Currie was advised a veterinary certificate of fitness would be required prior to the gelding again being permitted to start in a race.

AMERICAN RED- Bumped passing the 800m. Raced wide in the early stages before obtaining cover near the 700m.

ORACOLO- Stewards accepted the reasons tendered by Trainer P Webster regarding the late declaration of rider on the gelding. Stood flat footed as the start was effected. Trainer P Webster was advised a warning would be placed on the gelding as a result.

I AM A HIT- Had difficulty obtaining clear running in the early stages of the home straight, shifted in passing the 150m arriving to attempt a marginal run simultaneously as a runner to the outside shifted in under pressure resulting in the gelding being placed in restricted room having to be eased. Consequently, went to the line without being fully tested.

LUCIFER’S LOOT- Laid out on entering the home straight before shifting back in under pressure near the 150m before being corrected by its rider.

CONTROL FREAK- Bumped passing the 800m. Raced wide in the early stages before obtaining cover near the 700m.

SLY CORNER- Began awkwardly.

MONDAY MONDAY- Laid out rounding the home turn.

SUPER ZAMBONI- Bumped passing the 150m and was momentarily crowded. Performed disappointingly. Underwent a post-race veterinary examination which failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. Jockey D Smith advised that his mount had travelled reasonably and did not let down in the home straight, stating further that though the gelding had won at the track in Maiden company previously, given its most recent performances it may not appreciated the undulating surface. Trainer M Taylor advised that the gelding had been working well leading into the event and had expected a forward showing. Ms Taylor advised further of an intention to have her regular Veterinarian examine the gelding during the week and undertook to advise should anything become apparent regarding its condition. Regardless of any findings, Ms Taylor stated it would be her intention to send the gelding for an immediate spell.

POINT BREAK- Laid in and away from another runner in the early stages. Laid in for the majority.

Race 2: MOCO FOOD SERVICES FILLIES & MARE BENCHMARK 62 HANDICAP 1000m

The start of the event was delayed slightly to allow QAS officers to attend to Jockey Huxtable and App Donald (Asthma) and App Champkin (illness). Jockey Huxtable and App Donald were cleared to fulfil their engagements by QAS officers and App Champkin later stood herself down due to illness. App Champkin was advised she would require a medical clearance prior to again being permitted to ride in a race.

Declaration of correct weight was delayed to allow connections of 4th placegetter YOURALLTHAT to view the patrol footage to ascertain whether grounds for an objection against 3rd placegetter THAWRA were present. After viewing the footage no objection was lodged and correct weight was declared on the Judges semaphored numbers.

BID IN A HURRY- Underwent a pre-race veterinary examination and was passed fit to start. Began awkwardly. Laid in under pressure down the running.

LITERMONT- Laid in leaving the 400m.

CITROUILLE- Began awkwardly. Pulled up soon after passing the winning post. Jockey J Stanley advised his mount felt somewhat off in its action on pulling up. Underwent a post-race veterinary examination which failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. Trainer J Gleeson will be contacted in the coming days regarding the mares condition.

LADY WAIRUA- After being caught wide in the early stages was restrained near the 800m before shifting in to obtain a position closer to the inside running rail with cover near the 600m and consequently settled further back in the field than may have been expected. Crowded leaving the 400m. Stewards intend to query Trainer C Geran regarding the late declaration of rider.

YOURALLTHAT- Tightened for room passing the 150m and obliged to restrain.

THAWRA- App L O’Donnell pleaded guilty to a charge under the provisions of AR131(a) in that she did exercise insufficient effort in straightening her mount and as such did permit her mount to shift in passing the 150m when insufficiently clear of YOURALLTHAT causing that runner to be tightened and restrained. App O’Donnell’s license to ride in race was subsequently suspended for a period of 8 days to commence 28th May up to and including 4th June 2023. In arriving at penalty Stewards determined the degree of carelessness and interference to both be in the low range with App O’Donnnell’s guilty plea and good record to be mitigating factors as well as App O’Donnell’s actions to relieve the pressure caused by her shift which were noted however considered to be belated in timing. App O’Donnell was advised of her right to an appeal.

Race 3: TAB BETS FRIENDS WINTE PROVINCIAL STAYERS – HEAT- BENCHMARK 70 HANDICAP 2000m

CHASING JACKLEY- Raced wide in the early stages. Raced keenly from the 1600-1400m.

SAVVY LEGEND- Taken in, despite the efforts of its rider, passing the 1850m tightening a runner to its inside. Raced keenly down the back straight. Taken in, despite the efforts of its rider, passing the 1850m tightening runners to its inside. Laid in leaving the 400m. Shifted ground under pressure down the running.

TOKYO BLOSSOM- Jockey N Tomizawa pleaded guilty to a charge under the provisions of AR131(a) in that passing the 1850m he did direct his mount in dictating the line of GOT THE LOT in onto the running of SAVVY LEGEND, which was into taken in onto the running of GRAND SHANGHAI which was tightened, checked and lost its rightful running. Jockey Tomizawa’s license to ride in race was suspended for a period of 15 days to commence 28th May up to and including 11th June 2023. In determining penalty Stewards considered the degree of carelessness and interference to be in the mid to high range and high range respectively with Jockey Tomizawa’s guilty plea and good record to be mitigating factors as well as Jockey Tomizawa’s actions to relieve the pressure caused by his shift which were noted however considered to be belated in timing. Jockey Tomizawa was advised of his right to an appeal. Crowded passing the 400m. Performed disappointingly. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. Trainer M Sears advised the stable were disappointed with the performance and had expected a forward showing, adding further that the intention would be to have the stables regular veterinarian examine the filly with a likely endoscopic examination and blood analysis to be conducted. Ms Sears undertook to advise Stewards should anything become apparent after those examinations.

GRAND SHANGHAI- Tightened passing the 1850m and obliged to check losing its rightful running. Performed disappointingly. Underwent a post-race veterinary examination which failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. Trainer L Gough advised that he had expected a better showing and that the stable had supported the gelding however noted that, in his opinion, the gelding is better suited to events over further distances and despite having won at the track in weaker grade may not have handled the undulating surface.

Race 4: 1EQUINE – FOR THE EQUINE ATHLETE MAIDEN PLATE 2150m

Jockey S Apthorpe pleaded guilty to a charge under the provisions of AR131(a) in that near the 400m he did shift out when insufficiently clear of ZUMAIA causing that runner to be restrained and shifted out. Jockey Apthorpe’s license to ride in races was suspended for a period 8 days to commence 24th May up to and including 31st May 2023. In determining penalty Stewards considered the degree of carelessness and interference to be in the low range as well as his guilty plea. Stewards also noted that Jockey Apthorpe’s outward shift may have been slightly exacerbated by the fact he had committed to a run outside of JONDY GRACIE which shifted out marginally at that time however, it was determined that regardless of the marginal shift from JONDY GRACIE, Jockey Apthorpe was not in a position to permit any outward shift at that time given he was not sufficiently clear of ZUMAIA and whilst this may have resulted in an exacerbation of the interference it was deemed to be only slight in extent. Jockey Apthorpe was advised of his right to an appeal.
