QUEENSLANDRACING INTEGRITY COMMISSION ,STEWARDS REPORT TOOWOOMBA TURF CLUB TOOWOOMBA – SATURDAY, 15 JULY 2023 WEATHER – Fine TRACK RATING – Good 4 RAIL – Out 4m the entire OFFICIALS Chairman of Stewards – C. Warren Stewards – J. Childs, E. Tickner & W. GlassClerk of Scales – A. Cuckson Judge – M. Fahey & B PoelstraVeterinarian – Dr M. BaffySwab Attendants – A. Challen Starter – C. Higgins & D. Hodgson GENERAL As A. Thompson was indisposed due to illness, Stewards permitted rider placements as per the Stewards’ race-day summary. Jockey Thompson was advised that he would require a medical clearance prior to riding again. Race 1: MORT & CO BENCHMARK 62 Handicap (1300m) Correct weight was delayed allowing Stewards to view footage of the start. After viewing the patrol footage Stewards declared weight on the Judges semaphored numbers. TO LOVE SOMEBODY – Momentarily held up on heels approaching the 300m before shifting inside of runners to obtain clear running. TUHINGA – Slow into stride. Jockey G. Cartwright reported that, in her opinion, the gelding didn’t appreciate the quick-back up from its previous start at Warwick on 6/7/23. Trainer J. Thomas concurred with G. Cartwright’s comments and advised the gelding would most likely be sent for a spell. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. BOOM BY BY – Raced wide and without cover throughout the event. Trainer J. Hanna advised that the gelding is better suited to shorter distances, adding that, in his opinion, being caught wide throughout was a telling factor in the finish. PENNYWORTH – Raced keenly approaching the 900m and brushed the running rail. Laid in under pressure in the home straight and proved difficult to ride out. ANGELS SHARE – Momentarily held up on heels approaching the 300m before shifting wider to obtain clear running. MR EIGHTY EIGHT (NZ) – Momentarily crowded for room approaching the 1200m. SUKICHE – Raced wide throughout the event. Race 2: LIVING TURF Maiden Plate (1200m) The start of this race delayed when ARTISFLY and METHIL were incorrectly presented in the mounting yard with the incorrect saddles and saddlecloth numbers. Trainer M. Currie was fined $500 under AR106. The start was further delayed when ARTIESFLY was fractious in the gates and became cast. CAPTURED IN TIME – Harmlessly dislodged App S. Champkin enroute to the barriers. Underwent a pre-race veterinary examination and passed fit to start. Raced wide and without cover throughout the event. Again, harmlessly dislodged App Champkin on pulling up after the event. App Champkin was passed fit to fulfill her remaining engagements. TROPIC SANDS – Trainer L. Hatch was advised a warning would be placed on the gelding for its pre-race manners after being reluctant to proceed to the barriers. Raced keenly in the early and middle stages. Held up for clear running from the 400m until the 300m. ZIPPING TOM – Laid in under pressure approaching the 300m. ARTIESFLY – Declared a late scratching at 5:33pm when fractious in the barriers and becoming cast. Trainer M. Currie was advised that a veterinary clearance would be required prior to the mare obtaining a further barrier certificate. LOOK AT ROSA was also declared a late scratching at 5:33pm after being struck by the adjacent ARTIESFLY which was fractious in the barriers. Trainer T. Dougall was advised that a veterinary clearance would be required to the mare racing again. Stewards ruled that all monies invested on both runners were to be refunded with the following deductions applicable to all successful wagers placed prior to 5:33pm: 22cents in the dollar for the win14cents in the dollar for the place on the winner31cents in the dollar for 2nd place19cents in the dollar for 3rd place BRONZE MEMORY – Slow to begin. DUCHESS BREE – Raced keenly on heels near the 500m. ST ROSE – Shifted wider approaching the 300m to obtain clear running. METHIL – As no other suitable senior rider was available, Jockey L. Tilley was permitted to ride the filly 1.5kg over the allotted weight of 55kg. Raced wide and without cover throughout the event. TRUTH OR DARE – Trainer N. Peterson was advised that a warning would be placed on the gelding for being uncompetitive. Race 3: PRYDE'S EASIFEED BENCHMARK 70 Handicap (1100m) FOR MY ANNIE – Began only fairly. Bumped shortly after the start. MISS BARTY – Raced keenly on heels for a short distance passing the 700m when being crossed. VAST KAMA - Raced wide and without over until obtaining cover approaching the 600m. RUSHEEN – Momentarily crowded by SADDLEBOY which shifted in leaving the 900m. INCOMPARABLE – Bumped shortly after the start. Raced keenly passing the 600m. Momentarily steadied off heels approaching the 350m and shifted wider to obtain clear running. ATLANTIC WAY - Raced keenly on heels for a short distance leaving the 700m when the pace slackened. HELEVA DEEL – Obliged to shift out and away from heels approaching the 100m to obtain clear running. SADDLE BOY – After beginning well from a wide barrier was ridden positively to obtain a more forward position than may have been expected. NEWITT – Began awkwardly. Raced wide and without over for majority of the event. Race 4: TAB BETS FRIENDS Class 2 Handicap (1050m) BEAUTY BOOM – Began awkwardly and bumped. Improved onto heels approaching the 600m and obliged to shift wider to obtain clear running. ARTIE BEATSOME – Laid in approaching the 400m. Jockey L. Tilley reported that he was not disappointed with the performance, and that the gelding was not suited by the fast early tempo and would be better suited racing over further distances. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Harmlessly dislodged Jockey Tilley on returning to scale when a stirrup-leather broke. After Stewards examined Jockey Tilleys gear, Jockey Tilley undertook to carry out the necessary maintenance to ensure similar malfunctions of equipment were not replicated. COBURG – Began only fairly. POINT BREAK – Bumped on jumping. Tightened onto ASHERLA approaching the 750m. Improved onto the heels of BEAUTY BOOM and obliged to be taken wider on entering the home straight. THE ORPHAN (NZ) – Shifted in passing the 750m tightening POINT BREAK onto ASHERLA. Jockey K. Yoshida was reprimanded under AR131(a) for careless riding as a result of this incident. ASHERLA – Tightened approaching the 750m and obliged to momentarily ease. Race 5: JOE WAGNER GROUP QTIS Two-Year-Old & Three-Year-Old Maiden Plate (1200m) FIERY RING – Buffeted between runners on jumping. Performed below market expectations. When questioned, Jockey J. Stanley stated despite racing wider from 600m his mount travelled well throughout but when asked for an effort, proved disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Trainer K Kemp undertook to advise should anything become apparent regarding the geldings condition in the coming days. WELUVYA – Began awkwardly. Raced wide and without cover in the early stages before being ridden forward to obtain a position outside the leader approaching the 800m. Commenced to weaken abruptly approaching the 450m. Laid in rounding the home turn. Apprentice J. Molloy stated he had concerns for the gelding’s welfare and subsequently elected to ease down. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant abnormalities. Nonetheless, Trainer M. Currie was advised that a veterinary clearance would be required prior to racing again. AUNTY HAZEL – App S. Champkin was reprimanded under AR132(7)(a)(ii) for using her whip on six occasions prior to the 100m. BASIL'S GIFT – Restrained approaching the 1000m to obtain a position with cover behind runners after being caught wide. TIME TO LAUNCH – Began awkwardly, shifted in, and bumped. Approaching the 900m laid in and away from WELUVYA. Performed below expectations. Jockey K. Yoshida stated the gelding travelled well in the early stages, however, came under pressure approaching the 500m, and proved disappointing. He further added the gelding felt awkward in its action. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a poor post-race recovery. Trainer K. Kemp was advised a veterinary clearance would be required prior to racing again. CHIRRUP – Began awkwardly, shifted out and bumped. Race 6: SUBZERO AIRCONDITIONING BENCHMARK 62 Handicap (1625m) STEINBRENNER (NZ) – Raced keenly in the early and middle stages. RAPIDO GRIS – A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. DELANEY'S GIRL – Slow into stride. PERFECT LEGACY – Raced keenly in the early and middle stages. Shifted wider to improve approaching the 400m, momentarily hampering BATTLE. Jockey C. Whitely was advised to exercise greater care in similar circumstances. LANSBROOK – Raced keenly down the back straight. BATTLE - Raced keenly in the early and middle stages. Momentarily inconvenienced approaching the 400m when PERFECT LEGACY shifted ground.
