Race 1: COOLAROO FOOTBALL CLUB BENCHMARK 62 HANDICAP 1100m

DARK HORSE- Performed below market expectations. App S Callow advised that her mount had travelled well throughout the event until asked for an effort on rounding the home turn when it proved disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination revealed some minor throat noises. Trainer M Currie, who advised the gelding had been working well leading into the event, would now undergo an endoscopic examination and undertook to advise Stewards of the results.

UNCLE FRANK- Raced wide for the majority.

FOREVER VOLO- Laid in under pressure down the running. When questioned regarding the improved performance Trainer P Cox advised that, in his opinion, tonight’s performance indicated a return to form after a spell with the geldings three (3) starts last preparation all being disappointing. Stewards noted the explanation.

DON’T DISS AROUND- After being caught wide in the early stages was restrained in an effort to obtain cover and a position closer to the inside running rail near the 800m. Shifted wider to obtain clear running near the 200m.

KORUTO- Momentarily held up for clear running on entering the home straight before shifting wider.

TUSCANY BOUND- Slow into stride. Hung in for the majority of the event. Trainer A Park was advised a warning would be placed on the geldings racing manners.

ROWDASH- Commenced to race keenly when crossed in the early stages. Laid in near the 500m and again under pressure down the running having to be corrected by its rider near the 200m.

NEWITT- Raced wide for the majority. Finished tailed off. Trainer D Jones advised that, in his opinion, the gelding may have had its tongue over the bit in running, nonetheless, Mr Jones was advised a warning would be placed on the gelding for being uncompetitive.

Race 2: PRESTIGE PATIOS CLASS 2 HANDICAP 1300m

The start of the event was significantly delayed after a mechanical malfunction of the barriers caused a false start. All runners which were loaded in the barrier at the time of the incident were restrained and brought back behind the barrier where all were examined by the Veterinary Surgeon with the following five (5) runners being declared late scratching’s on veterinary advice at 5:42pm:

MT MORK SHARK, SHATTER PROOF, CHAMPINSKY, MONDAY MONDAY & RELICTA.

Prior to the declaration of correct weight all monies invested on the aforementioned runners were ordered to be refunded with the following deductions applicable to all successful wagers placed prior to 5:42pm:

61cents in the dollar for the win
56cents in the dollar for the place on the winner
67cents in the dollar or 2nd place
65cents in the dollar for 3rd place

Starters C Higgins and B Mallory undertook to oversee remedial works carried out on the starting gates prior to the next event to ensure they were in full working order. Toowoomba Turf Club officials undertook to carry out additional examination of the starting gates in the coming days and to complete any further maintenance works required prior to the starting gates being used again.

Race 3: THE AVENUE APARTMENTS BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP 870m

THAWRA- Slow to begin. Crowded soon after the start becoming awkwardly placed on heels having to be eased. Improved onto heels near the 400m having to be steadied. Underwent a post-race veterinary examination which failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. Stewards questioned App O O’Donnell, in the presence of Senior Rider H Richardson, regarding her riding of the mare in the home straight, particularly why she appeared to restrain her mount soon after entering the home straight when an ample run presented between LEICA SPECIAL and OUTBACK PLAYBOY choosing rather to restrain and shift wider becoming awkward on the heels of MADDISON’S MISSILE before shifting to the outside and improving into a run between that runner and A GOOD CHANCE. App O’Donnell advised that, on reviewing the race footage she agreed with Stewards that she had erred by not improving into the run between LEICA SPECIAL and OUTBACK PLAYBOY on straightening, however at the time she felt OUTBACK PLAYBOY, which was showing an inclination to lay in slightly, may have been going to shift in further, hence her decision to restrain and shift wider. Stewards advised App O’Donnell that the matter would be referred to the Racing Queensland Apprentice Training Team for review and further tuition. Trainer M Currie advised his instruction had been to be positive on the mare from the barrier being an 870m event and its favoured racing pattern. Additionally, Stewards intend to review the betting on the event.

A GOOD CHANCE- Raced wide for the majority.

RIVER DANZKA- Momentarily crowded near the 750m. Held up for clear running on straightening until a point near the 200m when being shifted wider.

Race 4: CHRIS SHEATH & ASSOCIATES BENCHMARK 65 HANDICAP 1890m

SETINBRENNER- Buffeted on jumping. Laid out near the 1600m. Laid in under pressure down the running. App O’Donnell pleaded guilty to a charge and was fined the sum of $400 under the provisions of AR211(1) for returning to scale in excess of the permissible weight. Additionally, App O’Donnell pleaded guilty and was fined $400 under the provisions of AR185(1) for altering equipment, specifically her riding boots, after weighing out. App O’Donnell was advised of her right to an appeal.

PERFECT ENCOUNTER- Restrained off heels near the 1700m. Shifted out around heels soon after entering the home straight.

RUBY’S LAD- Slow to begin. Raced keenly from the 1400m and for the majority of the home straight. Performed below market expectations. Jockey A Thompson advised on returning to scale that, in his opinion, his mount felt off in its action. Underwent a post-race veterinary examination which failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. Trainer P Wallace undertook to advise Stewards should anything become apparent regarding the geldings condition in the coming days.

HE’S VIRAL- Bumped on jumping. Raced wide for the majority.

KNEEZE- Raced keenly in the early stages when crossed by another runner leaving the 1700m. Laid out passing the 1600m.  Held up for clear running from the 400m until a point leaving the 200m. Stewards questioned Jockey N Tomizawa regarding his riding of the gelding in the home straight specifically, why Jockey Tomizawa didn’t attempt to improve into a run between CONFUSION and STEINBRENNER approaching the 200m. Jockey Tomizawa advised that with the benefit of hindsight be concurred with Stewards in that he should have endeavoured to improve into that run when it presented however, at the time, he felt STEINBRENNER, which was laying in under pressure, would continue to shift in hence his decision to shift wider. Stewards noted the explanation.

MANTINELLO- Bumped on jumping. Raced wide for the majority.

Race 5: BLUE MOUNTAIN HOTEL QTIS 3yo MAIDEN HANDICAP 1100m

Trainer T Lambourn was advised the filly would be required to obtain a further barrier certificate prior to again being permitted to start in a race. Jockey M Wishart pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under the provisions of AR131(a) in that she did exercise ineffective and insufficient effort in preventing her mount from shifting in near the 200m resulting in her mount shifting in when insufficiently clear of LIZA IN LIGHTS causing that runner to be tightened, checked, become severely unbalanced and lose considerable ground. Jockey Wishart’s license to ride in races was suspended for a period of 13 days to commence 30July up to and including 11 August. In determining penalty Stewards considered the severity of the interference to be in the high-range and the degree of carelessness to be in the low-range noting Jockey Wishart did make some efforts to straighten her mount however, Stewards determined these efforts to be ineffective and insufficient. Jockey Wishart was advised of her rights to an appeal.

LADY LETHAN- Bumped on jumping. Raced wide for the majority.
