Stewards permitted the following overweights at tonights meeting:

Race 6- Jockey N Tomizawa +1kg

Race 1: NEIL MANSELL TRANSPORT BENCHMARK 75 HANDICAP 1200m

REJOICED- Laid in under pressure down the running bumping the inside running rail on entering the home straight and again approaching the winning post.

VAINSTREAM- Shifted in marginally approaching the 500m momentarily crowding runners to the inside. App L O’Donnell was advised to exercise greater care in similar circumstances. Laid out rounding the home turn. Performed below market expectations. App O’Donnell advised her mount was inclined to race ungenerously throughout and raced flat. Trainer M Currie advised the gelding would now likely leave his stable. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

BUGALUGS- Shifted in and bumped on jumping.

COLPO DI TAMBURO- Bumped on jumping. Momentarily steadied off heels approaching the 600m. Momentarily crowded and obliged to ease approaching the 500m. Trainer L Roche advised Stewards that the gelding had bled from both nostrils post-race and that COLPO DI TAMBURO would now likely be retired from racing. A post-race veterinary examination confirmed the bilateral epistaxis and found no other abnormalities. Stewards noted Mr Roche’s comments though nonetheless advised him the gelding would incur a ban from racing for 3 months and be subject to a 1000m gallop in the presence of s Steward prior to again being permitted to start in a race under the provisions of AR79.

KUZCO LAD- Slow to begin. Raced wide for the majority.

MISS BARTY- Raced wide for the majority.

MOTOMISS- Slow to begin. Improved onto heels and eased approaching the 500m. Held up for clear running approaching he 400m and was obliged to shift wider around heels on entering the home straight. Laid in under pressure down the running and momentarily crowded BRAVE WARRIOR passing the winning post. Jockey C Whiteley was reminded of his obligations to stop and straight his mount in similar circumstances.

BRAVE WARRIOR- Momentarily crowded passing the wining post.

CRACKER ESSGEE- Restrained in the early stages in an effort to obtain cover and a position closer to the inside running rail.

BULLETIN- Bumped on jumping. Bumped on jumping. Improved onto heels and was obliged to ease approaching the 500m.

SUKHBIR- Shifted out and bumped on jumping. Momentarily crowded and taken in momentarily approaching the 500m. Jockey G Cartwright advised Stewards her mount had been inclined to lay in for the majority.

Race 2: JESS JONES REAL ESTATE BENCHMARK 62 HANDICAP 1100m

THIS IS ONE- Began awkwardly and shifted out. Performed below market expectations. Jockey N Tomizawa advised that his mount travelled well throughout the event but when asked for an effort raced flat adding that, in his opinion, the gelding had come to the end of it preparation. Trainer K Kemp concurred adding that the gelding would now likely be sent for an immediate spell. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a slow post-race recovery.

FIRST PEOPLES- Began awkwardly and bumped heavily before being slow into stride. Consequently, settled further back in the field than may have been expected.

THUNDER MOON- Began awkwardly, shifted in and bumped. Momentarily eased off heels leaving the 1000m and raced keenly for a short distance thereafter before commencing to over-race on heels for a short distance leaving the 800m. Jockey M McGillivray advised that his mount felt off in its action over the concluding stages. A pot-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have lacerations to both hind fetlocks consistent with being galloped on in running.

ROSE BY DESIGN- Bumped on jumping before being tightened between runners and becoming awkwardly placed on heels having to be checked and losing ground.

GRANITE PRINCE- Raced wide in the early stages before being permitted to stride forward leaving the 900m and obtaining a position outside the leader near the 800m. Raced keenly for some distance thereafter. Laid in under pressure down the running. When queried regarding the seemingly improved performance Trainer M Nolan advised that tonights event represented a significant drop in class from the geldings most recent start. Adding further that with the addition of blinkers for the first time the stable had expected an improved showing, also adding that he felt the wide barrier to be advantageous given the geldings racing style. Stewards noted the explanation.

MANDALAY BLONDE- Raced wide for the majority.

BRIGHT DAISY- Dislodged Jockey C Whiteley several times in the mounting yard before proving reluctant to proceed to the barriers. Trainer L Hatch was advised the mare would be required to trial satisfactorily under race-day conditions prior to again being permitted to start in a race. Bumped on jumping. Laid out for the majority. Held up for clear running form the 500m until the 300m. Obliged to shift out around heels approaching the 200m. Laid in under pressure down the running.

DRAGON PINS- Shifted in leaving the 1000m when not fully clear of THUNDER MOON causing that runner to be momentarily eased. Jockey A Allen was advised to exercise greater care in similar circumstances.

Race 3: BRETT WILMOT ACCOUNTING BENCHMARK 60 HANDICAP 1650m

MAUI- On returning to scale App L O’Donnell advised that her mount raced flat. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

Race 4: NEWLANDS GROUP RATINGS BAND 0-58 HANDICAP 2000m

MAGIC MIKEY- Bumped on jumping. Laid in passing the 1900m crowding SANDGATE ROAD. Jockey C Whiteley was advised to exercise greater effort in keeping his mount straight in similar circumstances. Raced keenly in the early and middle stages. Shifted out in and effort to improve leaving the 400m and bumped with JUMEIRAH TRIANGLE. Shifted our marginally leaving the 300m hampering JUMEIRAH TRIANGLE. Jockey C Whiteley was advised to exercise greater care in similar circumstances. Stewards noted a marginal inward shift from JUMEIRAH TRIANGLE and a marginal outward shift from MT MORK SHARK occurring simultaneously with the shift from MAGIC MIKEY and considered these to be mitigating factors in the incident.

SCILAGO- Began awkwardly and bumped. Raced wide for the majority. Underwent a post-race veterinary examination which revealed the gelding to be lame in the near fore. Trainer L Elliot was advised the gelding would require a veterinary certificate of fitness prior to again being permitted to start in a race.

CAESARIS- Bumped on jumping.

MINOKAWA- Bumped on jumping. Improved onto heels having to be eased and shifted out leaving the 100m. Jockey A Thompson pleaded guilty to a charge careless riding under the provisions of AR131(a) in that he did permit his mount to shift in approaching the 800m when insufficiently clear of TRICKETEER dictating the line of that runner in before tightening its running room as well as that of MISSY’S READY which was racing to its inside, with both runners being restrained as a result. Jockey Thompsons license to ride in races was subsequently suspended for a period of 10 days to commence on 8 September up to and including 17 September 2023. In determining penalty Stewards placed the degree of carelessness and severity of interference to be in the low-mid range, Stewards also considered Jockey Thompsons guilty plea, his forthright evidence and his record in relation to the rule when determining penalty.

MISSYS READY- Tightened and obliged to restrain approaching the 800m.

QUARTER PAST- Obliged to shift out and around heels leaving the 200m.
