Race 2: Harvey Norman Toowoomba Electrical BENCHMARK 70 Handicap 1050 metres

DOCTOR TEEKAY- Following a veterinary examination conducted on 23 October Stewards were advised the gelding was found to be lame in the off-hind and have shin splints on the near-fore cannon. Acting on veterinary advice Stewards advised Trainer M Currie that the gelding would require a veterinary certificate of fitness dated no sooner than 21 November 2023 with specific mention of the aforementioned conditions having abated, prior to it again being permitted to start in a race.

GENERAL
As jockey M. Murphy was injured, and L. Tarrant stood down due to illness after race four, riding replacements were made as per the steward’s summary. M. Murphy and L. Tarrant will require a medical clearance before riding next.

Stewards permitted the following overweight at tonight’s meeting:
Race 5: L. Tilley + 1kg (55.5kg)

Race 1: SARAH SPRINGATE FROM REALWAY CLASS 1 HANDICAP 1300M

POSTWICK (GB) – Jockey M. Savva was reminded of her obligations of the use of the whip when her mounts are out of contention.

RUSSIAN SUB - When questioned regarding the tactics adopted, jockey L. Tilley stated his instructions were not to lead as the horse performs best when ridden with cover. He added that when beginning well he was mindful of his instructions not to lead, however was unaware that the eventual leader SURCOTE had missed the kick, and therefore elected to restrain to obtain cover behind HUMAN TOUCH and POSTWICK who were racing to his inside. He added that as he was obtaining cover, SURCOTE and ZOU ZOUAMORE improved around him which positioned him back further in the field than anticipated. He further added that his mount travelled well and improved through the field and hit the front at the 300m and felt that RUSSIAN SUB was going to win comfortably, however the gelding pricked its ears and waited for the field to come to it and did not finish the race off. Trainer H. Richardson confirmed the instructions not to lead or fire the horse up and to obtain cover. He further added that the horse has had a history of getting to the front too early in its races in which the gelding can prick his ears and wants to half stop. Stewards noted the explanations.

ARCHER'S GAME – Steadied near the 400m.

MORE THAN SUBTLE – Near the 400m had to be steadied from the heels of HUMAN TOUCH which shifted out and away from ZOU ZOUAMORE. Jockey G. Cartwright (HUMAN TOUCH) was reprimanded in this incident.

Tilley was subsequently found guilty to a charge under AR131(a) that he rode in a careless manner in that he permitted VAN GOGH to shift in near the 1000m when insufficiently clear of FIRE KING (Apprentice S. Champkin), which had to be restrained to avoid the heels of VAN GOGH and then made contact with the rail and lost ground. L. Training partnership B & M Costello were advised that they would be required to provide a veterinary clearance for FOREBEARS and that the gelding would be required to officially trial to the satisfaction of Stewards before racing again.

Race 5: O&D HOUSE WASH BENCHMARK 60 HANDICAP 1890M

ELIZANO - Connections advised a change of tactics in that the gelding would be ridden more conservatively from the wide barrier. Ridden forward and obtained cover on the rail behind the leaders. R Pereira advised that the mare would now be sent for spell.
