GENERAL

After acting on a report from the Compliance Assurance Team, Stewards inquired into the presence of a prohibited substance and an unlabeled spray bottle being located in the horse transport vehicle of Trainer T Pascoe.  After considering the matter Mr Pascoe was issued with two charges pursuant to AR251(1)(b)(i) and (ii) respectively in that he did bring on course a unlabeled spray bottle which could be used to administer a prohibited substance to a horse and a Chest Rub Ointment which could be used to produce a prohibited substance in a horse. Trainer T Pascoe was subsequently reprimanded and fined the sum of $400 for the two charges respectively. In assessing penalty, Stewards considered the specific circumstances surrounding the breach, Mr Pascoe’s guilty plea, his record in relation to the rule and his forthright evidence as well as the seriousness of the breach and the need for both general and specific deterrence to ensure the integrity of the industry. Both Mr Pascoe’s runners, COPPER SUNSET & DARCHINIAN, underwent a pre-race veterinary examinations, including the taking of pre-race blood samples, and were passed fit to start.

Sunsequently went to the line without being fully tested. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

DRATINI- Began awkwardly and bumped.

COPPER SUNSET- Laid in under pressure passing the winning post. Raced wide for the majority. Jockey P Hamblin was reprimanded under the provisions of AR132(7)(a)(ii) in that he did use his whip on 6 occasions, 1 more than permitted, prior to the 100m. When queried regarding the improved performance Jockey P Hamblin advised that, in his opinion, the gelding is patchy in its form however was unlucky in its most recent start finishing in 8th place despite being beaten less than two (2) lengths and given that fact he had expected a forward showing today. Trainer T Pascoe concurred with Jockey Hamblin’s assessment adding that he too had expected a forward showing. Stewards noted the explanations.

KWAMI- Slow to begin. Laid in near the 600m. Raced wide for the majority. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have a slow post-race recovery. App T Leslight concurred with Stewards that he had erred by not attempting to restrain marginally approaching the 800m and obtaining cover in a rearward position and stated that, in his opinion, being caught wide throughout had been a telling factor in the finish.

BASIL'S BOW- Bumped passing the 600m, becoming unbalanced and shifted in. Raced wide for the majority. Underwent a post-race veterinary examination which failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. When queried regarding the below market performance Jockey P Hamblin advised that with the lack of pace in the event and after beginning well his mount had settled further forward than intended and had resented his efforts to settle further back racing somewhat keenly throughout, factors, along with the wide barrier, which were telling in the finish. Trainer T Dougall stated that, in his opinion, the geldings performs at its best at other venues.

GOING TO THE SUN- Underwent a post-race veterinary examination which failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. Stewards opened an inquiry into Jockey J Stanley’s riding of the gelding with particular concern regarding the apparent lack of vigour between the 600m-300m when yielding ground and position. Jockey Stanley stated that his instructions had been to attempt to lead but not work excessively for that position given it was the geldings first outing over a distance greater than 1350m, and after beginning well form the wide barrier had been able to settle in a forward position with relative ease, though was unable to cross to the fence due to the positioning of SCAPINI to his inside. Jockey Stanley added that he had been obliged to make efforts to stay off that runner for some distance during the middle stages when receiving pressure from SOCK’EMSID on his outside. Jockey Stanley further stated that he felt his mount began to weaken somewhat from the 600m and from the 500m commenced to yield ground and at that time he felt something may have gone amiss with the gelding, he therefore elected not to place his mount under any pressure and attempted to let the gelding travel at its own pace and ensure he did not cause any interference whilst conceding his position. Jockey Stanley then stated on passing the 300m his mount balanced up well and at this time he placed it under some pressure to which it responded reasonably, he then proceeded to ride his mount out to the finish of the event without issue. Stewards adjourned the matter to a date and time to be fixed to allow for a review of betting records of the event and the consideration of any further evidence.

SCAPINI- Lost an off-side winker passing the 1300m. Momentarily crowded when racing inside the heels of GONING TO THE SUN passing the 1300m, 1200m and again passing the 900m. App S Champkin concurred that she had permitted her mount to settle in an awkward position and would have been better positioned to ease marginally and settle behind GOING TO THE SUN or to have improved slightly to that runners inside and secured that position on the rail.
