SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT
 
Roma – Saturday 23 March 2024
 
Apprentice L. O’Donnell pleaded guilty to a charge under AR218(4)(a) that her mobile phone was found to be present in the female jockey’s room following the commencement of the race-meeting. Apprentice O’Donnell was fined the sum of $300. In assessing penalty, Stewards considered her guilty plea and unblemished record in relation to the rule. Apprentice O’Donnell was advised of her rights to an appeal.
 
GENERAL
 
Stewards permitted the following overweight:
Race 5, No. 12 MANTINELLO – M. Hellyer +1kg (55kg)
 
When Apprentice J. Williams was indisposed, Stewards permitted replacements as per the Stewards’ Race-day Summary. Apprentice Williams was advised he requires a medical clearance prior to racing again.
 
 
Race 1:SUBZERO AIRCONDITIONING BENCHMARK 70 HANDICAP (1300m)
 
DOCTOR TEEKAY – Trainer M. Currie was fined $200 under LR67(1) for the late declaration of Apprentice J. Molloy as the rider of the gelding. Began awkwardly. Raced keenly in the early stages. Approaching the 900m, commenced to over-race and was obliged to be shifted out to avoid the heels of DEFERNTIAL. Laid out under pressure in the home straight.
 
DIACO – Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
 
PERFECT ENCOUNTER – Began awkwardly. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
 
MOST DAZZLING – Eased down in the home straight. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be displaying cardiac arrhythmia for the first time. Trainer I. Turner was advised of the provisions of the Racing Australia Code of Practice under AR88B(2)(b).

TOP BOY – Began only fairly before losing ground and commencing to buck in the early stages of the event and subsequently eased out of the event by its rider. Trainer M. Currie was advised the gelding would be required to trial fitted with race-day gear prior to racing again.
 
MENARI MAGIC – Bumped with SHEPPEY leaving the 400m when attempting to improve. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
 
DEFERENTIAL – Over-raced throughout the early and middle stages of the event. Directed wider to avoid heels approaching the 700m and subsequently raced wide and without cover thereafter. Laid out under pressure in the home straight and contacted SHEPPEY approaching the 300m. When questioned regarding the performance, Jockey G. Cartwright advised the gelding’s racing manners proved detrimental to the gelding’s finishing efforts. Trainer J. Healey concurred with the view of Jockey Cartwright and advised it would be the stable’s intention to start the gelding over shorter distances in the future. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
 
VONZITHER – Over-raced in the early stages of the event.
 
SHEPPEY – Raced wide and without cover for majority of the event. Raced in restricted room rounding the home turn and bumped with MENARI MAGIC leaving the 400m. Bumped DEFERENTIAL approaching the 300m.
 
 
Race 2: SEDL AGENCIES BENCHMARK 60 HANDICAP (1200m)
 
NEVER GIVE UP – Carried wider approaching the 600m to avoid the heels of SEIRU which shifted out and away from FIRST PEOPLES. Bumped with SET TO SHINE approaching the 200m when that runner laid in. Laid in under pressure in the home straight. 
 
FIRST PEOPLES – Raced wide and without cover until approaching the 600m when able to obtain the lead, momentarily inconveniencing SEIRYU who was obliged to shift away from heels. Jockey N. Fazackerley was advised to exercise greater care. When questioned regarding the performance, Jockey Fazackerley advised that after being caught wide in the early stages, and runners to his inside proving reluctant to maintain their positions, he had elected to stride forward and assume the lead, however the significant amount of work the gelding had done in the early stages proved detrimental the gelding’s finishing efforts.
 
SET TO SHINE – Raced keenly in the early stages. Carried wider approaching the 600m when trailing NEVER GIVE UP who was obliged to shift out to avoid heels. Laid in under pressure in the home straight and bumped NEVER GIVE UP approaching the 200m.
 
SUISSE SCANDAL (NZ) - Began awkwardly and shifted in abruptly before being corrected by its rider. Raced in restricted room rounding the home-turn and in the early part of the home straight.
 
BOOM BY BY – Began awkwardly. Raced wide and without cover for majority of the event.
 
BOOMI'S BUDDY – Held-up for clear running rounding the home-turn. Laid in under pressure in the home straight. Apprentice D. Bennett was fined $500 under the provisions of AR132(7)(a)(ii) in that he did use his whip on 6 occasions prior to the 100m, and 17 in totality throughout the event.
 
RADIANT QUEEN – Crowded between runners on jumping and obliged to steady. Held-up approaching the 500m for clear running when attempting to improve.
 
PRETTY LITTLE LASS – Began awkwardly.
 
SEIRYU – Raced keenly when crossed by FIRST PEOPLES approaching the 600m before shifting out and away from that runner, carrying NEVER GIVE UP and SET TO SHINE wider. Eased down in the home straight. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have lacerations to the off-hindleg consistent with being galloped on which required treatment.
 
 
Race 3: GERRY BROWN'S SHELVING & STORAGE QTIS THREE-YEAR-OLD MAIDEN PLATE (1200m)
 
DOWNEY – Slow to begin before being bumped shortly after the start. Bumped with TUCK approaching the 800m when that runner was carried inwards and became unbalanced for several strides.
 
ONOMATOPOEIA – Approaching the 800m attempted to shift in, placing TUCK in restricted room before being carried in onto DOWNEY. Jockey L. Tarrant was advised to exercise greater care when shifting ground. Leaving the 300m, shifted off the heels of JAMAICAN MECRAZY to obtain clear running.
 
WESTOAK – Approaching the 1100m, attempted to shift in to obtain a position with cover, inconveniencing WINDOW TAPPER who was obliged to steady from heels. Apprentice D. McGillvray was reprimanded under AR131(a) for careless riding. Again, approaching the 800m, attempted to shift in to obtain a forward position resulting in WORLDY SPIRIT becoming awkwardly placed on heels and being steadied and shifted wider. Apprentice D. McGillvray was reprimanded under AR131(a) for careless riding. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
 
JAMAICAN MECRAZY – Raced wide and without cover when attempting to improve from the 700m. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
 
LOST MY NIGHTIE – Hampered between runners on jumping and lost ground. Approaching the 900m obliged to steady to avoid the heels of TUCK which shifted in. Commenced to over-race for a short distance thereafter. Again, steadied approaching the 800m when trailing TUCK who was carried inwards onto DOWNEY and raced in restricted room for some distance thereafter.
 
SUNFYRE – Trainer P. Wallace was reprimanded under LR36(1) for failing to withdraw the filly from its dual engagement by the prescribed time. In assessing penalty, Stewards noted Mr Wallace’s exceptional record in relation to race-day offences and that the delayed withdrawal of the filly had been a result of miscommunication. Began awkwardly and bumped. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
 
THE QUICKENING – Began awkwardly and bumped. Bumped approaching the 500m with WORDLY SPIRIT.
 
WINDOW TAPPER – Bumped on jumping. Steadied to avoid the heels of WESTOAK approaching the 1100m. Raced wide and without cover for majority of the event. Disappointed for a run approaching the 400m when racing in restricted room between ONOMATOPEIA and JAMAICAN MECRAZY.
 
WORLDY SPIRIT – Bumped on jumping. Over-raced throughout the early stages of the event before being steadied and shifted wider approaching the 800m when WESTOAK shifted in. Raced wide and without cover for the remainder of the event. Bumped THE QUICKENING approaching the 500m. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
 
TUCK – Raced keenly in the early stages. Approaching the 900m, shifted in to obtain a position closer to the running rail, inconveniencing LOST MY NIGHTIE was obliged to steady. Apprentice J. Molloy was reprimanded under AR131(a) for careless riding. Approaching the 800m, carried inwards onto DOWNEY and bumped with that runner, becoming unbalanced when racing in restricted room. Laid in under pressure in the home straight. When questioned regarding the performance, Apprentice J. Molloy advised that despite the gelding racing greenly throughout the event, it had travelled well, however when placed under pressure proved disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. 
 
PEACH GALANTES – Began awkwardly and bumped. Held-up rounding the home-turn and in the early part of the home straight for clear running. Raced in restricted room over the concluding stages.
 
Race 4: LIVEWIRED ELECTRICAL CLASS 2 HANDICAP (1000m)
 
RIVER DANZKA – Began awkwardly and bumped. Raced keenly in the early stages. Carried wider approaching the 100m and eased when DUCHESS BREE shifted outwards to obtain clear running.
 
OUR RED PLANET – Began awkwardly and bumped.
 
BUCKALTIUS – Began awkwardly and bumped soon after the start. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
 
ZOUTHUR (NZ) – Raced wide and without cover for majority of the event.
 
INATICK – Raced wide and without cover for majority of the event.
 
ORTHIE'S GIRLS – Bumped approaching the 600m with LES GIRLS.
 
RHUMB LINE – When questioned regarding the performance, Jockey J. Huxtable reported the gelding became under heavy pressure approaching the 600m and proved disappointing. He further added he was of the opinion something may have been amiss with the gelding upon pulling-up. Trainer M. Currie could offer no explanation for the disappointing performance. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Stewards intend to follow up on the condition of RHUMB LINE in coming days.
 
ASGOODASYOUGETT – Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
 
LES GIRLS – Bumped approaching the 600m with ORTHIE’S GIRLS.
 
TISANI EMPEROR – Began awkwardly and bumped. Laid in under pressure in the home straight. Obliged to alter course and shift outwards approaching the 200m to obtain clear running.
 
DUCHESS BREE – Had some difficulty obtaining clear running in the home straight, before being shifted outwards approaching the 100m carrying RIVER DANZKA wider who was obliged to ease. Jockey N. Evans was advised to exercise greater care.
 
 
Race 5: WHOLESALE HORSEWEAR HOUSE BENCHMARK 62 HANDICAP (1890m)
 
LUCKY EXCHANGE – Raced keenly in the early stages. Took the crossing awkwardly approaching the 1400m. Raced wide and without cover for majority of the event.
 
CONNECTICUT – Harmlessly dislodged Jockey K. Zechner enroute to the barriers before quickly being recaptured. Approaching the 1700m shifted in when not fully clear of CALM BUCKLE who was obliged to steady. Jockey Zechner was reprimanded under AR131(a) for careless riding.
 
NITROGLYCERINE – Slow to begin.
 
FAST LADY – Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
 
MIKKI EIGHT – Over-raced on heels approaching the 1700m when racing in restricted room for several strides. Obliged to steady off heels approaching the 200m when CALM BUCKLE shifted in marginally.
 
CALM BUCKLE (NZ) – Began awkwardly. Steadied off the heels of CONNECTICUT approaching the 1700m. Raced keenly for some distance thereafter. Laid in under pressure in the home straight, crowding MIKKI EIGHT approaching the 200m. Apprentice A. Donald was advised to exercise greater care and correct her mounts.
 
ZOU ZOUAMORE – Began only fairly. Raced wide and without cover for majority of the event. Over-race throughout the middle stages of the event when the pace slackened. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a slow recovery.
 
ROYAL GEORGE – Raced wide and without cover until the 1200m when allowed to stride forward and obtain the lead.
 
CLEAR BLONDE – Took the crossing approaching the 1400m awkwardly.
 
MANTINELLO – Carried wider over the crossing approaching the 1400m. Carried wider approaching the 1200m when racing keenly after the pace slackened and shifted out to avoid the heels of ZOU ZOUAMORE. Raced wide and without cover thereafter.
 
BUMP'N'RUN – Underwent a pre-race veterinary examination behind the barriers at the request of trainer Mr G. Betros and was deemed unsuitable to start. Declared a late scratching at 7:10pm. Prior to the declaration of correct weight, Stewards ordered that all monies invested on BUMP’N’RUN prior to 7:10pm be refunded in full with the following deductions to apply:

1st place – 4c Win, 5c Place
2nd place – 7c Place
3rd place – 5c Place

Trainer G. Betros was advised the gelding would require a veterinary clearance prior to racing again.
 
WINSTON BLUE – Blundered on jumping.
 
 
Race 6: HARVEY NORMAN COMMERCIAL TOOWOOMBA MAIDEN HANDICAP (1050m)
 
Correct weight was delayed allowing Trainer K. Kemp (TIME TO LAUNCH) and Stewards to view footage of the start. Once satisfied that the mare’s poor start was directly attributable to Apprentice S. Callow becoming unbalanced as the start was effected, correct weight was declared on the Judges’ semaphored numbers.
 
HARRY THE HORSE – Badly hampered between runners on jumping and lost ground before being bumped again. Held-up for clear running approaching the 400m. Bumped with SUNCRAFT when attempting to obtain clear running approaching the 200m. Apprentice J. Molloy was reprimanded under AR132(7)(a)(i) for using his whip on consecutive occasions prior to the 100m.
 
CURIOUS MAGIC – Raced wide and without cover for majority of the event.
 
NEWSBEAT – Bumped on jumping.
 
TIME TO LAUNCH – Began marginally awkwardly resulting in Apprentice S. Callow becoming badly unbalanced and losing significant ground. Tailed the field throughout the early stages of the event.
 
A SIP FOR SLIPPY – Bumped on jumping and became unbalanced. Bumped again soon after the start. Raced wide and without cover for majority of the event.
 
BEAU'S GIRL – Bumped soon after the start. Raced wide and without cover for majority of the event.
 
CHOCKABLOCK – Began only fairly and subsequently settled further back than may have been expected. Raced keenly in the early stages.
 
RED HERRING – A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be displaying an upper respiratory noise. Trainer K. Kirwin was advised a veterinary clearance including an endoscopic examination would be required prior to racing again. Trainer K. Kirwin advised consideration would be given to the gelding’s immediate racing future indicating the gelding would most likely be retired.
 
SUNCRAFT – Began awkwardly and bumped.
 
 
Race 7: 1EQUINE - FOR THE EQUINE ATHLETE MAIDEN HANDICAP (1625m)
 
BROADWAY SPIRIT – Approaching the 1400m, shifted in, placing SAVVY STRIKE in restricted room for several strides when tightened in onto GRAND TORINO (NZ). Jockey N. Tomizawa was reprimanded under AR131(a) for careless riding. Raced wide and without cover until the 1000m.
 
GRAND TORINO (NZ) – Bumped on jumping. Taken marginally wider approaching the 1400m to avoid the heels of MEDICAL AUTOCRAT.
 
MEDICAL AUTOCRAT – Bumped on jumping.
 
YIPPEE BEAN – Laid out under pressure in the home straight.
 
DEER HUNTER – Raced keenly in the early stages of the event. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
 
MORE SUCCESS – Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
 
GO GIRL GO (NZ) – Over-race throughout the early and middle stages. Raced wide and without cover from the 600m when forced wider to avoid weakening runners. When questioned, Apprentice E. Lang reported in her opinion, the mare’s racing manners proved detrimental to its finishing efforts. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
 
FULL OF EURO – Bumped on jumping. Bumped with DEER HUNTER approaching the 400m.
 
SAVVY STRYKE – Raced in restricted room and obliged to steady approaching the 1400m. Over-race for some distance passing the 1200m when the pace slackened.
 
CRY ME A RIVER – Began awkwardly before from the wide barrier shifted behind runners to obtain a position closer to the running rail. Took the crossing awkwardly approaching the 1400m and became unbalanced.
