OFFICIALS

Chairman of Stewards – C. Warren
Stewards – J. Childs, E. Tickner, D. MacDonald & W. Glass

GENERAL

App A. Donald was reprimanded under AR128(1) for failing to arrive on course by the prescribed time (45 minutes) prior to her engagement in Race 1.

Following an inspection of the female jockey’s room, mobile phones belonging to App S. Willis and App O. Webb were located. App S. Willis subsequently pleaded guilty to a charge pursuant to AR218(4)(b) in that she did have in her possession her mobile phone following the commencement of the race-meeting. App S. Willis was subsequently fined $750. In assessing penalty, Stewards considered App S. Willis’ guilty plea and unblemished record in relation to the rule, however noted that App Willis had been provided with two opportunities to present her phone to Stewards prior to the commencement of and during the course of the meeting and had failed to do so. App Willis was advised of her rights to an appeal.

After taking initial evidence from App O. Webb and a preliminary examination of the mobile phone, App Webb’s phone was subsequently seized for further examination. Stewards subsequently adjourned the matter to a time and date to be fixed.

Trainer M. Currie was fined $100 under AR106(1) for having SUISSE SCANDALL and NAUGHTY WORDS presented without a nasal strip which was part of both runners approved gear. Stewards subsequently permitted both SUISSE SCANDALL and NAUGHTY WORDS to race without that piece of gear.

Race 1: HAPPY 50TH BIRTHDAY DALLAS PARRY BENCHMARK 70 HANDICAP  (1050m)

MATILLY – Bumped the inside running rail leaving the 400m. Shifted out leaving the 50m when not fully clear of BULSARA which was obliged to steady. App O. Webb was reprimanded under AR131(a) for careless riding.

TOKYO SINS – Laid in under pressure in the home straight. Raced wide and without cover for majority of the event.

COMMAND APPROVED – Laid in near the 900m. Shifted in near the 550m when not fully clear of ANNAKURI which was momentarily crowded. App A. Donald was advised to exercise greater care. App Donald reported that the gelding failed to travel comfortably throughout the event and proved disappointing when placed under pressure. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant abnormalities.

ARTIE BEATSOME – Tightened for room soon after the start and was obliged to ease. Momentarily held-up for clear running leaving the 300m. Obliged to shift wider to obtain clear running near the 150m and brushed ORTHIE’S GIRLS.

BULSARA – Obliged to steady from heels leaving the 50m.

ORTHIE'S GIRLS – When App D. McGillivray was late arriving on course due to transport difficulties, Stewards permitted Jockey W. O’Connell to be the replacement rider when no other apprentices were available. Bumped on jumping. Bumped near the 900m before being crowded and obliged to momentarily ease.  Raced wide and without cover from the 700m. Brushed near the 150m.

DUCHESS BREE – Slow to begin.

ANNAKURI – Bumped heavily on jumping. Shifted out marginally near the 900m and bumped ORTHIE’S GIRLS. Crowded for room near the 900m. Momentarily crowded near the 550m.

Race 2: LIGHTNING SYNDICATIONS BENCHMARK 62 HANDICAP  (1300m)

LIGHTFAST – Raced wide and without cover for a majority of the event.

MR WANDJI – Raced keenly in the early stages.

VONZITHER – Raced keenly in the middle stages. Raced wide and without cover from the 800m.

SNEAKY SHARK – Commenced to tire approaching the 400m. Jockey J. Morris stated the gelding travelled well throughout the early and middle stages, however felt that something had become amiss with the gelding when placed under pressure and therefore he elected to ease his mount down. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be suffering from cardiac arrythmia for the first occasion. Trainer J. Thomas was advised that the gelding required a veterinary clearance inclusive of ECG results prior to completing a satisfactory 1000m gallop with an immediate veterinary examination post gallop, before racing again.

SCRIPT WRITER – Momentarily held-up for clear running passing the 300m.

SUISSE SCANDAL (NZ) – Stewards permitted the gelding to race without the nasal strip. Raced keenly in the middle stages. Laid in under pressure in the home straight proving somewhat difficult to ride out.

Bumped on jumping. Raced keenly near the 1000m. Momentarily crowded leaving the 800m and bumped. Bumped near the 550m. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.

MENSA MAESTRO – Steadied near the 1100m to obtain a position with cover closer to the inside running rail. Bumped near the 800m.

LA VITTORIA – Stewards inquired into the reason surrounding the late scratching of the mare at 09:35am given that the scratching of the mare had prevented an emergency from obtaining a start. Trainer M. Nolan advised the intention of the stable was to run the mare, however the mare had been found in its stable subsequent to scratching time with swelling to the off-foreleg. Stewards noted the explanation. Mr Nolan was advised the mare would require a veterinary clearance prior to racing again.

NAUGHTY WORDS – Stewards permitted the mare to race without the nasal strip. Tightened for room soon after the start and bumped. Improved onto heels near the 550m and shifted out before being bumped. Held-up leaving the 550m until being obliged to shift wider leaving the 400m to obtain clear running.

Race 3: COOPER COMMERCIAL MAIDEN HANDICAP (1300m)

NOBLE VALOUR – Over-raced throughout the early and middle stages. Raced wide and without cover leaving the 1000m.

SPYRO – Trainer S. Sixtus was reminded of her obligations pursuant to AR102(a) for failing to declare that the horse had been gelded. Stewards noted the procedure had failed to be processed by the previous trainer and had been performed prior to SPYRO ever starting in a race. Ms Sixtus was advised to ensure a stable return was enacted indicating the status of SPYRO as a gelding and that it be back dated to the date of the procedure. Bumped leaving the 300m. Became momentarily awkward in its action thereafter and commenced to give ground. Finished tailed off. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant abnormalities. Trainer S. Sixtus was advised a warning would be placed on the gelding’s record for the poor performance.

LA HARRI – Finished tailed off. Trainer D. Dobbin was advised a warning would be placed on the mare’s record for the poor performance.

ANOTHERLOVELYDAY – Began very awkwardly.

Race 4: KENNARDS HIRE CLASS 1 HANDICAP (1625m)

SPRAY GUN – Shifted out near the 450m in an effort to obtain clear running and bumped heavily with MORDECAI before shifting back in, becoming momentarily awkwardly placed on heels, and hampering FARWEST. Was then held-up on heels until a point leaving the 300m before again being held-up for clear running passing the 200m, having to be shifted in to improve into a marginal run. Jockey N. Tomizawa was severely reprimanded under AR131(a) for careless riding pertaining to the incident at the 450m.

FARWEST – Improved onto heels having to be steadied near the 1400m. Raced keenly near the 1300m. Hampered near the 400m. Bumped near the 100m.

MORDECAI – Raced keenly near the 1300m. Bumped heavily near the 450m.

DUMA – Raced wide and without cover for a majority of the event. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.

MAPLE DOOR – Proved difficult to load. Trainer J. Downes was advised a warning would be placed on the gelding’s record as a result.  Began very awkwardly resulting in Jockey K. Yoshida becoming unbalanced and lost ground. Raced ungenerously in the early stages. Approaching the 1400m, Jockey K. Yoshida was struck in the face by a large clod of turf kickback which impacted his vision and consequently obliged him to steady his mount. Laid out near the 1300m.

WIND RUSH FARM – Slow to begin. Under pressure from the 900m. Commenced to give ground near the 800m before being eased down thereafter. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to have sustained a notable laceration to the near-fore heel consistent with galloping on itself in running. Trainer C. Anderson was advised a veterinary clearance would be required prior to racing again.

SUNIKI – Raced wide and without cover for a majority of the event.

PALAZZO SPIRIT – Began awkwardly before being crowded soon after. Raced keenly near the 400m. Bumped near the 350m. Disappointed for a run approaching the 150m having to be steadied.

SZABO – Bumped on jumping. Stewards inquired into the reasons the gelding clipped heels and blundered near the 750m. After reviewing footage and taking evidence from riders, it was established ON THE TARGET shifted out marginally to ensure sufficient room for runners to the inside and in doing so obliged UCHI to shift out marginally also, carrying MR EVANS marginally wider. Simultaneously, SZABO was shifting in to obtain a position closer to the inside running rail and subsequently resulted in that filly clipping the heels of MR EVANS and blundering. As Stewards could not be comfortably satisfied that the interference was directly attributable to one runner not further action was taken other than to remind all riders to exercise greater care in similar circumstances.

UCHI – Raced wide and without cover for a majority of the event.

RUNAROUND SUE - Raced wide and without cover for a majority of the event.

SO EXTRA – Shifted out near the 350m and bumped. Momentarily held-up for clear running entering the home straight.

MY ONE – Was unable to obtain clear running over the concluding stages and subsequently went to the line without being fully tested.

MR EVANS – Began awkwardly and bumped. Raced wide and without cover for a majority of the event.

Race 6: LIVING TURF QTIS THREE-YEAR-OLD MAIDEN HANDICAP  (870m)

On reviewing the photo finish prior to the declaration of correct weight, Stewards identified that the Judges semaphore board numbers were incorrect for third place. MYSTERY POWER had been placed as third and MISS SKATING had been placed as fourth. After discussing with the Judges, it was accepted that an error had been made when semaphoring the placings and the placings were subsequently amended pursuant to AR 214(4)(a) and correct weight was declared on numbers 1, 4, 5, 2, placing MISS SKATING third and MYSTERY POWER as fourth.

MEDALS – Bumped on jumping.

MYSTERY POWER – Tightened on jumping before being buffeted between runners. Approaching the 700m, momentarily steadied and shifted in to obtain a position closer to the inside running rail. PSYCHEDELIC BEAN – After beginning on terms failed to maintain contact with the remainder of the field. Finished significantly tailed off. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant abnormalities. Trainer B. Brown was advised the fillies nominations at TAB venues would be refused until such time as its non-TAB performance improved.

TEQUILA STEALER – Became awkwardly placed on the heels near the 400m and again at the 350m.
