Race 2: FOCUS HR CLASS 2 PLATE (1300m)

Correct weight was delayed for Stewards to view footage of the start in relation to MISS LENORR losing significant ground. Once satisfied that the mare’s poor start was directly attributable to its own racing manners, correct weight was declared on the Judges’ semaphored numbers.

ASHIGARU – Eased off the heels of NEW JOY, which shifted out leaving the 1000m.

GULF OF SIDRA – Contacted the outside running rail when leaving the mounting yard and harmlessly dislodged Rider P. Hamblin. Underwent a pre-race veterinary examination and passed fit to start. When questioned regarding the tactics adopted on the mare leaving the 1100m, specifically her decision to not remain racing in a position with cover behind the eventual leader, TALANA, Apprentice S. Callow advised that she had been instructed to obtain a position with cover. She added after initially being able to do so, NEW JOY commenced to race keenly on the heels of TALANA when the pace slackened, and for this reason she elected to shift wider leaving the 1000m. She concurred with Stewards, that in hindsight, she would have been better served to maintain her position on the inside rail in the early stages in an effort to prevent TALANA obtaining the lead, and also to afford her mount an opportunity to obtain a position with cover.

Yoshida stated that he was being mindful of the racing manners of COLPO DI TAMBURO, which was showing a tendency to lay in. TALK TIME – Began only fairly and subsequently settled further back than may have been expected. Improved onto the heels of DEPTH CHARGE leaving the 300m, before being held-up for a short distance later. When questioned regarding his vigour shown over the concluding stages. Rider J. Stanley stated that the gelding had been displaying a tendency to lay-in at various stages throughout the event, and particularly when placed under pressure in the home straight. He added that the gelding was becoming under pressure at this stage of the race, and when continuing to lay in, for this reason he felt that the gelding was better suited to being ridden without the use of the whip.
