STEWARDS REPORT

TOOWOOMBA TURF CLUB

SATURDAY 9TH NOVEMBER 2024

WEATHER – Overcast     TRACK RATING –  Good 4; Good 3 following Race 1 RAIL – True

OFFICIALS

Chairman of Stewards – C Warren
Stewards – J Childs, T Preston, D MacDonald & C Taylor

Race 1: TOOWOOMBA CONFECTIONERY WHOLESALERS MAIDEN HANDICAP  2000m

Declaration of correct weight was delayed to allow Stewards to view footage of the start. After viewing the official patrol footage it was ascertained that the barrier of MONTAGLIARI had opened marginally prior to the remainder of the field due to its being fractious. However, as the mare had begun awkwardly and lost ground no advantage had been gained and no further action was taken with correct weight being declared on the Judges semaphored numbers.

BLOOD RED- Raced wide from the 900m, making a forward move from the 800m. Laid in under pressure down the running.

FORT DENISON- Bumped leaving the 800m. Raced wide form the 500m.

CATCH CRIES (NZ)- Underwent a pre-race veterinary examination and was passed fit to start. Bumped on jumping.

LADY PARVATI- Bumped leaving the 800m when shifted wider in an effort to improve before being taken back to the inside running rail. Trainer C Geran advised that the mare would now likely be retired from racing.

MONTAGLIARI- Fractious in the barrier, began awkwardly and lost ground. Raced keenly in the early and middle stages, over-racing on heels near the 1500m and 1300m.

THE MANIPULATOR- Began awkwardly, shifted in and bumped. Raced keenly in the early stages. Laid in under pressure down the running.

Following the running of this event the racing surface was upgraded to a Good 3.

Race 2: HUTCHINSON BUILDERS CLASS 3 PLATE  1100m

DON'T DISS AROUND- Slow into stride. Momentarily held up for clear running near the 400m and again on entering into the home straight. Shifted wider near the 150m to obtain clear running. Laid in over the concluding stages crowding MASTER GEE. App J Molloy was reprimanded for careless riding pursuant to AR131(a) as a result of this incident and advised to stop and straighten his mounts sooner in similar circumstances.

HEROIC CHIEF- Bumped on jumping. Held up for clear running from the 500m to the 350m before being shifted wider. When queried regarding the seemingly improved performance Trainer D Groves advised that, in his opinion, the gelding was underrepresented in the market having had hard runs in its most recent outings, adding that the stable had modestly supported HEROIC CHIEF with bookmakers. Stewards noted the explanation.

POINT BREAK- Bumped on jumping.

MASTER GEE- Steadied off heels near the 1000m. Bumped leaving the 600m and again near the 350m. Laid in under pressure down the running, shifted in over the concluding stages crowding SURREAL ASCOT before being momentarily crowded passing the winning post. Jockey A Allen was advised to exercise greater care in relation to the incident over the concluding stages.

HER EXPENSE- Began awkwardly. Underwent a post-race veterinary examination which failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. When asked to comment on the performance App R Thorburn advised that after being caught wide early and elected to stride forward to obtain a leading position on the inside running rail his mount commenced to race keenly when being steadied which, in his opinion, was to the detriment of the geldings finishing efforts.

ELECTRIC ARROW- Bumped on jumping. Attempted to shift wider in an effort to improve near the 600m and bumped. Bumped again near thee 350m. Held up on heels when crowded over the concluding stages.

Jockey L Tilley was reprimanded pursuant to AR227(a) for negligence in that he did forget to weigh in, which could have led to a breach of AR208(2), before being reminded by the Clerk of Scales to do so. App Thorburn concurred with Mr Wallace’s assessment.

Underwent a post-race veterinary examination which failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. Trainer J Dann advised on 10 November that the gelding had pulled up well following the event but did have some minor eye irritation likely due to sand kickback. App J Molloy’s license to ride in races was suspended pursuant to AR132(7)(a)(ii), for a period of 6 days to commence 10 November 2024 up to and including 15 November 2024 in that he did use his whip on 10 occasions prior to the 100m, 5 more than permitted. In considering the matter Stewards noted App Molloy’s guilty plea and forthright evidence, his good record in relation to the rule and the specific circumstances of the breach particularly that App Molloy did not employ the whip at all over the final 100m.
