OFFICIALS

Chairman of Stewards – C. Warren
Stewards – J. Childs, T. Preston & E. Tickner

GENERAL

When Jockeys G. Goomany, M. Hellyer, and App E. Molloy were all unavailable due to weather conditions associated with Cyclone Alfred, Stewards permitted rider replacements as per the Stewards’ race-day summary.

When App J. McMurray was indisposed due to illness, Stewards permitted rider replacements as per the Stewards’ race-day summary. App McMurray was advised he will require a medical clearance prior to riding again.

Race 1: MNP SECURITY BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP (1200m)

Correct weight was delayed allowing Stewards and Jockey N. Callow to view footage of the start to ascertain whether DOWNEY had been afforded a fair start. After viewing the official patrol footage it was determined that the gelding had turned its head into the adjoining the barrier stall simultaneous to the start being effected. Stewards were therefore satisfied that the gelding had been afforded a fair start and its poor start was directly attributable to its barrier manners. Correct weight was subsequently declared on the Judges’ semaphored numbers.

CHARMED PASSAGE (NZ) – Laid out rounding the home-turn and in the early part of the home straight. Laid out abruptly near the 200m. Shifted out abruptly near the 50m when App D Bennett lost the use of his near side rein before being corrected.

DOWNEY – Stood flat-footed as the start was effected and lost significant ground. Trainer M. Currie was advised that the gelding would require a barrier certificate prior to racing again.

GALWAY HUSSLER – Laid in under pressure in the home straight.

TOO MANY THOUGHTS – Laid in under pressure in the home straight. Raced wide throughout.

NEW YORK GAL – Began awkwardly before blundering. Jockey L. Tilley pleaded guilty to a charge under the provisions of AR131(a) in that near the 1100m, he did direct his mount in when insufficiently clear of PAMPUNI, causing that runner to be hampered and steadied from heels. Jockey Tilley’s license to ride in races was subsequently suspended for a period 8 days, commencing 16 March up to and including 23 March 2025. In assessing the matter, Stewards noted Jockey Tilleys guilty plea, record in relation to the rule and the application of the QRIC Careless Riding Template. Jockey Tilley was advised of his rights to an appeal.

MONAZEL – Began awkwardly.  Over-raced in the early stages when being restrained to obtain a position with cover.

PITAVAGO – Raced keenly in the early stages.

ROWDASH – Laid in under pressure in the home straight.

JOY MCCOY (NZ) – Momentarily held-up for clear running passing the 300m before shifting wider.

STROMA ASTER – Jockey L. Tilley was reminded of his obligations under AR131(b) to ride his mount out fully to the finish. In assessing the matter, Stewards noted that Jockey Tilley’s actions had no tangible effect on the placings but fell short of the expected standard.

JAMAICAN MECRAZY – Began awkwardly. Steadied from heels soon after the start.

JENNI INDA JUNGLE – Raced wide throughout. When asked to comment on the performance Jockey J. CHERRY LIPS – After beginning well from an inside barrier, was able to obtain the lead with relative ease and subsequently settled further forward than may have been expected. Raced keenly in the early stages. Jockey M. Wishart was reprimanded under the provisions of the AR131(b) for failing to ride her mount out to the finish. In considering the matter Stewards were comfortably satisfied that Jockey Wishart’s actions had not tangible effect on her mounts finishing position but fell short of the expected standard.

App O. Kendal was severely reprimanded under the provisions of AR131(a) for careless riding as a result of this incident. Stewards noted the carelessness and interference to be in the low range. Momentarily crowded passing the 200m.

COYNES ROAD – Hung-in for some distance, despite the efforts of its rider, passing the 850m crowding runners to its inside. Laid in rounding the home-turn and when under pressure in the home straight. Trainer M. Kropp was advised that a warning would be placed on the gelding’s record as a result.

CELESTIAL HARBOUR – Raced keenly in the early stages.

DISCERNING – When the gelding was mistakenly scratched due to an administrative error on Thursday, 6 March 2025, Stewards subsequently permitted the gelding to be reinstated later that afternoon. When considering the matter, Stewards noted the short time that the gelding remained out of the field and that no emergency runners had been effected. Began very awkwardly contacting the barrier partition and shifted in abruptly despite the efforts of its rider. Trainer M. Currie was advised that the mare would be required to trial prior to racing again. Improved onto heels having to be momentarily steadied and shifted wider near the 400m.
