Race 1: Aerotec Flight Training Class 3 H'cap – 1300m
1st –Double Rise 2nd – Fat Henry 3rd – Shot Bar 4th – Secrets

Track temperature: 20 degrees celsius

TIGGEROO (K. Ashton) began awkwardly.

Near the 550m, LION BEAUTY (C. Gilby) had to be momentarily steadied when tightened for room between SHOCKWAVES (B. Johnson) and TIGGEROO (K. Ashton), which shifted in and away from SHOT BAR (J. Letherby).

Approaching the 400m, SECRETS (A. Best) shifted out to improve and in doing so forced DOUBLE RISE (S. Richardson) wider on the track.

JAZZ MUSIC (N. Yamada) was held up and unable to improve from the 300m until nearing the 150m.

SHOT BAR and ZAKATO (M. O'Brien) raced wide throughout.

Stewards sought an explanation from jockey R. Goltz regarding the riding tactics adopted on STRIKING ROSE in settling further back in the field than it had in recent starts. R. Goltz stated that after discussing the race with trainer G. Blades, it was established there was considerable speed in the race, and in view of the mare’s wide barrier and the fact it was coming back in distance, it was decided that it would be in the best interests of STRIKING ROSE for it to settle midfield with cover if possible. R. Goltz added that after being caught wide he was obliged to settle his mount further back than he intended. Trainer G. Blades confirmed the instructions.

When questioned regarding the riding tactics adopted on the winner, DOUBLE RISE, S. Richardson stated that he had been instructed to lead in today’s event, however after the gelding began awkwardly it failed to show its customary speed and as a result settled back further than he had anticipated. He added that DOUBLE RISE did not travel well throughout the event until he was able to get the gelding to the outside near the 600m, at which time it responded to his riding. In noting the explanation, stewards will seek to confirm the instructions from T. Gollan.

Race 2: Harvey World Travel Class 6 Plate – 1000m

Kemp’s representative, Ms B. Lowe, was advised that prior to its next race start, the horse must barrier trial satisfactorily in an official trial, following which an endoscopic examination must be carried out, the results of which to be forwarded to stewards. A veterinary clearance would also be required for TRUE FLYER prior to its next race start.

When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of RED WINE BWANA, jockey R. Goltz stated his instructions were to lead on the gelding or obtain a position on the speed. He added that after beginning well and obtaining a leading position, TRUE FLYER improved to his outside and placed pressure on his mount, resulting in RED WINE BWANA commencing to overrace and as a result he was not able to settle his mount and it compounded in the straight.
A post race veterinary examination of RED WINE BWANA revealed the horse to have a slower than normal recovery rate.

A post race veterinary examination of FIDAKAT, which finished a distant last, failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

Stewards questioned apprentice M. O’Brien and trainer K. Dowling regarding the riding tactics adopted on GALLOPING RHYMES in leading today as compared to the horse’s most recent racing starts. M. O’Brien stated that she was instructed to give the gelding a couple of slaps out of the barriers as GALLOPING RHYMES had shown a tendency to be slowly away, and lead if possible. She added that her mount commenced to travel strongly in the middle stages and pulled hard despite her efforts to get the horse to settle. M. O’Brien further added that GALLOPING RHYMES was under pressure from the 600m and subsequently weakened in the straight. Trainer K. Dowling confirmed the instructions to lead if possible. After considering all of the evidence, stewards, in not taking any further action, advised apprentice O’Brien she should have made greater effort in attempting to settle her mount in the middle stages than she did on this occasion. Trainer K. Dowling was reprimanded for failing to notify stewards of the change of riding tactics to be adopted on GALLOPING RHYMES.

Mr Malseed added that the gelding had pleased him in recent trials and was confident of a forward showing tonight.

Stewards sought an explanation from jockey P. Wolfgram regarding the disappointing performance of MAGIC PEARL. P. Wolfgram stated that the mare travelled well throughout the race however when pressured by runners to its outside, MAGIC PEARL commenced to overrace and it was his opinion that this contributed to the horse failing to settle and run out the distance of today’s event. Trainer N. Hilton stated that MAGIC PEARL had a history of overracing and it was his intention to add pacifiers again to the gear of MAGIC PEARL in an attempt to have the mare relax more in its races.
