SUPPLEMENTARY REPORTS:
From Racing Queensland, Toowoomba – 23.9.10 – Race 3
Racing Queensland Limited (QRL) stewards today continued the inquiry adjourned from the Toowoomba Turf club meeting on 28 August 2010 into the tactics adopted by apprentice S. Bogenhuber, rider of DOUBLE RISE, and apprentice K. Gates, rider of KISS THE KING.
After taking further evidence from S. Bogenhuber and T. Gollan, trainer of DOUBLE RISE and master of S. Bogenhuber, stewards found S. Bogenhuber guilty of a contravention of AR135(b)(c) which reads:
“The rider of every hosre shall take all reasonable and permissible measures throughout the race to ensure that his hosre is given full opportunity to win or obtain the best possible place in the field.”
Any person who in the opinion of the stewards has breached, or was a party to breaching, any portion of this rule may be penalised, and the horse concerned may be disqualified.”
The specifics being that from approaching the 1200m until leaving the 800m, S. Bogenhuber, rider of DOUBLE RISE, rode her mount along at various stages to maintain a position to the inside of the overracing KISS THE KING (K. Gates) when it was reasonable and permissible for her to restrain her mount to trail KISS THE KING to avoid setting such a fast tempo. By maintaining her position to the inside of KISS THE KING in the opinion of the stewards,
S. Bogenhuber failed to take all reasonable and permissible measures to allow DOUBLE RISE to win or to obtain the best possible position.
After considering submissions put forward by S Bogenhuber and T. Gollan, stewards suspended S. Bogenhumber’s licence to ride in races for a period of 4 weeks, commencing midnight, 2 October 2010 and to expire at midnight, 30 October 2010.
After taking further evidence from K. Gates and Mr P. Wallace, trainer of KISS THE KING, stewards were of the opinion that from approaching the 1200m until leaving the 800m, K. Gates took all reasonable measures to restrain KISS THE KING, therefore stewards were of the opinion that her riding was not in contravention of the Rules of Racing and as such no action was taken.
Race 1: Clive Berghofer Land Sales Class 4 H’cap – 1500m
1st – Olanal 2nd – Striking Rose 3rd – Etching 4th – Lion Beauty
Track temperature: 19 degrees celsius
Connections advised stewards that CHANNEL CROSSING got back from its wide barrier last start, and that from the barrier 2 tonight the horse would be ridden in a more forward position if circumstances permit. The horse was ridden accordingly.
The start of this race was delayed after farrier attention was required for CHANNEL CROSSING after that horse sprung a shoe during the prelminary.
SHELDON (A. Best) and MY FLIGHT (M. O'Brien) were slow to begin.
CHANNEL CROSSING (R. Goltz) began awkwardly.
SHELDON (A. Best) had a tendency to overrace in the early stages, and near the 1300m threw its head in the air when steadied away from the heels of SILVER WHISPER (P. Wolfgram)
SILVER WHISPER (P. Wolfgram) was inclined to hang out in the early and middle stages.
Near the 500m, SILVER WHISPER was tightened for room and had to be checked when racing to the inside of STRIKING ROSE (A.Taylor). After taking evidence from the riders concerned and acting on their own observations, A. Taylor, rider of STRIKING ROSE, was given the benefit of the doubt as to whether she was careless at that point by allowing her mount to shift in. In coming to that decision, stewards were of the opinion that SILVER WHISPER may have shifted out at that point.
SHELDON had a tendency to lay in in the straight, which prevented its rider, A. Best, from being able to fully test his mount.
When questioned, R. Goltz was at a loss to explain the disappointing performance of CHANNEL CROSSING, other than to advise that the tactic to ride the horse more forward tonight in hindsight may have been detrimental to the horse’s chances, and in his opinion, consideration should be given to CHANNEL CROSSING being ridden further back in the field. Stewards noted the explanation.
