Race 1: TRACKSIDE PHOTOGRAPHY CLASS 1 H’CAP – 1100M
1st – Alinga Star 2nd – Spirit At Sea 3rd – Jam Tin 4th – Willhaveahundred

Track temperature: 37 degrees celsius

Trainer E. Ropiha was fined $100 under LR. 67 for failing to declare B. Richardson as the rider of WILLHAVEAHUNDRED by the prescribed time.

Correct weight was delayed to allow stewards the opportunity of viewing the patrol film of the start of the race to determine whether NOBODY KNOWS had been afforded a fair start.

NOBODY KNOWS (R. Goltz) knuckled over badly on jumping and dislodged its rider. R. Goltz was not injured in the incident and was cleared to fulfil his remaining engagements.

SAM’S CROSSING (J. Letherby) jumped awkwardly and lost ground.

SPIRIT AT SEA (N. Tomizawa) and JAM TIM (K. Banks) bumped at the start.

ALINGA STAR (B. Evans) and LA BANDERA (C. Eaton) raced wide in the middle stages.

Rounding the final turn SHUMIE GO (S. Drake) was steadied when crowded by the riderless NOBODY KNOWS.

Near the 300m SHUMIE GO shifted in and bumped FANTASTIC BELLA (K. Yoshida), and then shortly after FLAMMABLE (A. Best) shifted out slightly, momentarily inconveniencing those two runners. A. Best was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances in future.

ALINGA STAR laid in when racing in the home straight.

When questioned in relation to the performance of FLAMMABLE, A. Best explained that his mount was a two-year-old racing against older horses, but notwithstanding that expressed a little disappointment with the manner in which the filly finished the race off. He added that the filly had pulled up well after the race. Trainer M. Webb expressed slight disappointment with the performance of the filly, however stated that the filly would derive benefit from today’s run. He stated that he would continue with the filly’s preparation, however in future races would instruct the rider to ride the filly more quietly in the early stages.

When questioned in relation to the performance of FANTASTIC BELLA, K. Yoshida stated that the mare began well, however it felt that it was not able to run a strong 1100m and in this preparation is more suited to 1000m races or shorter.

When questioned in relation to the riding tactics on LONARO, P. Wolfgram explained that he was instructed to race midfield and rode in accordance with those instructions. He stated that at its last start at Toowoomba on 11 December 2010 the horse had led when there was little speed in the race and it pulled hard when racing inside another runner when in front. Trainer N. Saunders confirmed the instructions and stated that this is where the gelding races best and in his opinion was its established racing pattern. Mr Saunders added that the gelding would be ridden in a midfield position in its races in future and would continue with its preparation in races over longer distances. Mr Saunders also stated that although LONARO finished 4th in the race he expressed some disappointment in its performance and would have the gelding vetted during the week and report any abnormal findings to the stewards. The explanations tendered by jockey Wolfgram and Mr Saunders were accepted, however the stewards expected the horse to be ridden consistently in accordance with its established racing pattern in future races.

Near the 950m BALLINAGH, which had continued to race fiercely, was momentarily steadied away from the heels of DESTINYS DAME which had shifted in. Apprentice B. Evans, the rider of DESTINYS DAME, was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.

Near the 100m GREYS A ROCKIN shifted to the outside of SHEZA FLASHLADY (B. Richardson) which shifted in.

FLYING DYNAMITE (R. Goltz) hung in when racing in the home straight.

When questioned in relation to GREYS A ROCKIN racing in a more forward position today, N. Tomizawa explained that he was advised to have the gelding race wherever comfortable and with little pace in today’s race his mount had begun better than usual and from an inside barrier he elected to let the horse race in a more forward position. He added that his gelding had a tendency to overrace in the early and middle stages.

When questioned in relation to AREA FIFTYONE racing in a more forward position than at its previous starts, and further in relation to the improved performance of that gelding, jockey P. Wolfgram explained that he was instructed to ride the gelding in a handy position and this was consistent with its position when ridden by him at its previous starts. He stated that his gelding had begun well today after having missed the start at Eagle Farm at its last start on 1 January 2011, however with no pace in the race he elected to allow his mount to stride along in a forward position. Trainer R. Nicholson explained that he instructed P. Wolfgram to ride the gelding in a forward position and these instructions had been consistent with those given in its previous starts. He stated that the gelding had had difficulty in jumping with the field and mustering early speed, however he had shown an improvement in these areas in training and was confident that the gelding could jump with the field in future races. He explained that the gelding races best when ridden in a forward position and added that when circumstances permit the gelding will race in a forward position in its future races.

Goltz explained that he raced a little further forward than anticipated as his gelding had a tendency to overrace in the early stages. He stated that his mount began to give ground from the 700m and expressed disappointment in it not being able to finish off its race. Trainer M. Fry explained that the horse raced more forward than usual today and this did not suit the gelding. He expressed some disappointment in the performance but stated that the gelding may not have been suited to the distance of today’s race and he will continue its preparation in races over a shorter distance. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormality.
