SUPPLEMENTARY REPORTS:

Race 7. Toowoomba, 17.3.12

Following a complaint from connections of STAR OF MAHER in relation to the manner in which the mare was ridden in race 7, stewards questioned jockey R. Goltz, and the trainer Mr P. Facoory. Jockey Goltz explained that, in his opinion, the instructions were to allow the horse to jump well from an inside gate and race in a forward position. He added that after beginning well, STAR OF MAHER was able to obtain a forward position, however in the early stages he became aware of runners drawn from wide gates improving forward and for this reason - and because STAR OF MAHER was having its first start over 1600m - he elected to allow ATLANTA QUEEN to cross, which resulted in his mount racing behind the leader on the fence with cover. He said the mare travelled fairly well throughout however when the tempo of the race quickened from the 700m, STAR OF MAHER did not quicken despite his urgings and as a result he desisted from applying pressure to his mount from the 400m and the horse weakened. Mr Facoory expressed his concerns that desite having instructed jockey Goltz to have STAR OF MAHER in a forward position, he was disappointed that he elected not to maintain the lead, and further that from the 700m he was have preferred his rider to display more vigour than he did on this occasion. After considering all the evidence, stewards were of the view that there may have been a misinterpretation of the instructions given prior to the race and advised Mr Facoory that whilst stewards acknowledged that connections of horses have the right to express concerns with the manner in which their horses are ridden, they were however on this occasion unable to accept that the way in which STAR OF MAHER was ridden was in breach of any Rule of Racing.
