Performed below market expectations and finished tailed off failing to let down in the home straight. Stewards queried the tactics adopted by App B Wheeler in the early stages, specifically that after beginning well he elected not to press forward and obtain the lead or a position to the immediate outside of STORMTROOPER or shortly thereafter attempt to in behind that runner along the inside running rail. Stewards also queried his decision to then restrain his mount in what appeared to be an excessive manner causing it to settle in a slightly worse than midfield position. App Wheeler advised that his instructions had been to be positive and after beginning well his intention was to settle outside of STORMTROOPER however as that runner was being urged forward he had thought to settle in behind that runner however in attempting to do so he received a call from a rider to his inside and felt obliged to cease that action should he have caused interference. At that time he then elected to restrain his mount in an effort to obtain cover. App Wheeler concurred with Stewards that he had erred by failing to take advantage of his mounts barrier speed and then again failing to adequately ensure that he was clear to settle in behind that STORMTROOPER. App Wheeler agreed that he had erred further by excessively restraining shortly thereafter and not attempting to maintain his position. Stewards noted App Wheelers comments and advised the matter would be referred to the Racing Queensland Apprentice Training Team for review. Trainer M Currie advised that, in his opinion, the gelding had come to the end of its prep and advised it would be sent for an immediate spell. Nonetheless, Mr Currie was advised the gelding would require a veterinary certificate of fitness prior to again being permitted to start in a race. Trainer T Hurley was advised a warning would be placed on the gelding as a result. Trailed the field for the majority. Stewards inquired into Jockey C Bayliss riding of the gelding over the final 200m. Jockey Bayliss advised that his mount had been extremely slow away, had been hard ridden throughout and he fatigued over the concluding stages and was unable to ride his mount out to the best of his ability. Stewards noted Jockey Bayliss’s explanation but noted the manner in which the gelding was finishing the event off, whilst not a genuine place chance, should have finished closer to the winner than it did. Jockey Bayliss was therefore reprimanded under the provisions of AR131(b). In addition Jockey Bayliss was fined the sum of $200 under the provisions of AR128(2) for leaving the course without the permission of Stewards following his riding engagements.
