QUEENSLANDRACING INTEGRITY COMMISSION STEWARDS REPORT WARWICK TURF CLUB WARWICK – THURSDAY 6, JULY 2023 WEATHER – Fine TRACK RATING – Soft 7; upgraded to a Soft 6 follow Race 1 at 12:30pm RAIL – True OFFICIALS Chairman of Stewards – E. CromptonStarter – S. Higgins GENERAL As Jockey G. Geran was not riding at today’s meeting due to illness, rider replacements were made as per the Stewards race-day summary. Jockey Geran was advised he would require a medical certificate prior to again being permitted to race again. Race 1: PUNT 123.BET Fillies and Mares Maiden Plate (1350m) CALLYWAG – Momentarily crowded near the 800m. Raced wide and without cover from the 600m. JESTER STATEMENT – Raced keenly on heels near the 800m. Laid out under pressure in the home straight and became momentarily hampered and obliged to shift away from the heels of MISS GAGA leaving the 200m. LOOK AT ROSA – Began awkwardly, shifted out and was contacted. MISS GAGA – Began awkwardly. Shifted in momentarily crowding CALLYWAG near the 800m. Apprentice E. Lang was advised to exercise greater care and ensure she was fully clear when shifting ground in similar circumstances. Laid out under pressure in the home straight, before shifting out leaving the 200m contacting JESTER STATEMENT and becoming unbalanced. Apprentice Lang was advised to exercise greater care and to ensure she stops riding and straighten her mounts sooner in similar circumstances. BANDY'S DAY – Began awkwardly. Became awkwardly placed on heels near the 800m and subsequently was obliged to be momentarily eased. Held up for clear running in the early stages of the home straight. GIVE ME SOMETHING – Contacted on jumping. When questioned regarding the improved performance, trainer D. Murphy advised that the filly had been pleasing in its work leading into the event and the stable had expected a forward showing. Ms Murphy added further that the uninterrupted run, compared to the interference incurred last start, was also a telling factor. Jockey M. Hellyer advised that, after beginning well, his mount travelled well throughout adding that, in his opinion, the filly is better suited to being ridden in a prominent position as it was in this event. Stewards noted the explanations. TANGO SPIRIT (NZ) – Raced keenly in the early stages. Performed below market expectations. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. MANDALONG HELLCAT – Hampered on jumping. Finished tailed off. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. Trainer W. Munro was advised a warning would now be placed on the filly for the poor performance. Following the running of the event the track was upgraded to a Soft 6. Race 2: PUNT 123.BET Colts, Geldings and Entires Maiden Plate (1350m) EXTORTIONIST – Began awkwardly and bumped. Raced keenly in the early stages. HE'S A HOTFOOT (NZ) – Laid in rounding the home turn. LICENCE TO THRILL – Underwent a pre-race veterinary examination and was passed fit to start. Began awkwardly and was bumped. BANKONAJET – Began only fairly. OBJECTOR – Laid in rounding the home turn. ORO – Began awkwardly and shifted out. Jockey J. Taylor advised that, in his opinion, the early effort required by his mount in obtaining a prominent position from the wide barrier was a telling factor in its finishing effort. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. PRIMARY WITNESS – Raced keenly on heels for a short distance approaching the 800m. Laid in under pressure over the concluding stages. Race 3: PUNT 123.BET QTIS Three-Year-Old BENCHMARK 62 Handicap (1500m) Declaration of correct weight was delayed when Jockey N. Tomizawa, rider of 2nd placegetter DRAGON SONG, elected to lodge an objection against HURI BLACK (Jockey L. Tilley) being declared the winner alleging interference over the final 100m. After taking evidence from the riders involved and connections of the two runners and viewing the official patrol footage, Stewards dismissed the protest and ordered correct weight to be declared on the Judges’ semaphored numbers. POET'S DAY – Raced keenly in the early stages. Held up for clear running rounding the home turn. Performed below market expectations. Jockey M. Hellyer advised his mount travelled only fairly throughout, and proved disappointing when asked for an effort in the home straight. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant abnormalities. FOUR MILE LANE – Began awkwardly and was slow into stride. Trailed the field for majority of the event. Contacted by another runner rounding the home turn. CAPITEEL – Fractious in the barrier, underwent a pre-race veterinary examination and was subsequently declared a late scratching at 1:35pm. Prior to the declaration of correct weight all monies invested on the gelding were ordered to be refunded with the following all successful wagers placed on the gelding prior to 1:35pm: 11 cents in the dollar for the win12 cents in the dollar for the place on the winner14 cents in the dollar for 3rd place Trainer G. Thornton was advised the gelding would be required to trial to Stewards’ satisfaction prior to racing again. TRAIN ROCK – On arriving at the barrier was found to have a malfunction with the girth. As no suitable replacement girth was available, Stewards ordered the gelding be declared a late scratching at 1:32pm. Prior to the declaration of correct weight all monies invested on the gelding were ordered to be refunded with the following deductions applicable to all successful wagers placed prior to 1:32pm: 20 cents in the dollar for the win23 cents in the dollar for the place on the winner24 cents in the dollar for 3rd place Considering the circumstances surrounding the scratching no other action was taken other than to advise Warwick Turf Club to ensure they provided adequate spare gear at the barriers. DRAGON SONG – Bumped with FOUR MILE LANE when attempting to improve into a marginal run rounding the home turn. Shifted out and away from the heels of HURI BLACK leaving the 100m. HURI BLACK – Raced keenly in the early stages. Laid out under pressure in the home straight despite the efforts of its rider. Following the running of this event, Starter Mr C. Higgins advised Stewards that the rear barrier gates on barriers 9 & 10 were not functioning properly and were unable to be fixed. Subsequently, barriers 9 and 10 were not used for the remainder of the day. Race 4: NAIDOC CELEBRATION RACE 2023 QTIS Three-Year-Old Maiden Handicap (800m) Declaration of correct weight was delayed allowing rider of 3rd placegetter Jockey M Hellyer, to view the patrol footage of the concluding stages. After viewing the footage Jockey Hellyer elected not to proceed with any objection and correct weight was declared on the judges’ semaphored numbers. PUZZLE DESIGNER – Momentarily crowded approaching the 600m and raced ungenerously for a short distance thereafter. Laid out approaching the 200m taking EMPRESS ZIGGY and TOO MUCH MAKEUP wider on the track. THEYCALLMEKEITH – Contacted soon after the start. Raced greenly throughout. ADASHAN – Was declared a late scratching at 1:23pm due to travel difficulties. EMPRESS ZIGGY – Taken wider by another runner near the 200m. Raced wide for the majority. SHOULD KNOW BETTER – Began awkwardly. Shifted out abruptly over the concluding stages and inconvenienced DOLLYS A NATURAL. Apprentice E. Lang was reprimanded as a result of this incident and advised to stop and straighten her mount sooner in similar circumstances. TOO MUCH MAKEUP – Contacted soon after the start. Taken wider by another runner near the 200m. DOLLY'S A NATURAL – Raced wide and without cover for majority of the event. Inconvenienced over the concluding stages. Race 5: PUNT 123.BET BENCHMARK 58 Handicap (800m) GLAMOUR AND GLORY – Fractious in the barriers prior to the start being effected and subsequently began awkwardly. BONGANI – Taken wider by another runner near the 200m and subsequently bumped GREY NOISE. Became awkwardly placed on heels over the concluding stages. HARDNESS – Laid out rounding the home turn. Laid out leaving the 200m momentarily crowding SHE’S SO VAIN. BOLD RANSOM – Laid in under pressure in the home straight, momentarily crowding SHE’S SO VAIN. GREY NOISE – Contacted near the 200m. Laid out rounding the home turn. BEITSO – Began only fairly. PENNY STOCKS – Began awkwardly. Jockey C Taylor advised that, in his opinion, his mount resented the tongue-tie in running. HELLO ANGEL – Was declared a late scratching at 12:10pm on veterinary advice. Trainer R. Lipp was advised a veterinary certificate of fitness would be required prior to the filly again being permitted to race again. SHE’S SO VAIN – Disappointed for clear running near the 200m when attempting to improve into a marginal run between HARDNESS and BOLD RANSOM, which both shifted ground. TINDER- Laid out rounding the home turn. Race 6: PUNT 123.BET Class 2 Handicap (1500m) DEVINE FALLS – Underwent a pre-race veterinary examination having raced at the Sunshine Coast on 1 July 2023 and was passed fit to start. METAL ROCK – Laid out rounding the home turn. Eased down prior to the winning post. Jockey J. Adams was reminded of his obligations under the provisions of AR131(b). A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. STAR SEEKER – Began awkwardly. Raced wide and without cover in the early stages. Raced keenly down the back straight. When questioned regarding the seemingly improved performance Jockey R. Jamieson advised that, in her opinion, a step-up to a more suitable distance, and having been caught wide in its previous start were instrumental in the improved performance. Stewards noted the explanation. YAMUMZA – Bounded in the air as the start was effected. Raced keenly down the back straight and became awkwardly placed on heels near the 800m having to be shifted wider. ALT EFF FOUR – As Jockey A Thompson was unable to make the allocated weight on the mare, Stewards permitted Jockey G. Cartwright to be substituted as the rider. Jockey A. Thompson was subsequently fined the sum of $200 under the provisions of AR190(3) for accepting a ride when overweight. Became under pressure from the 600m. Jockey G. Cartwright advised that her mount never travelled comfortably and therefore she didn’t place her mount under pressure in the home straight. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. Trainer P. Richardson was advised the mare’s nominations would be refused at TAB venues until such time its Non-TAB form improved. SIZZLING BABE – Raced keenly in the early and middle stages. Jockey C. Eaton was reprimanded under the provisions of AR132(7)(a)(ii) in that she did use her whip on 6 occasions, 1 more than permitted, prior to the 100m. Race 7: PUNT 123.BET BENCHMARK 62 Handicap (1350m) JAKKALBERRY FINN (NZ) – Began awkwardly, shifted out and bumped. EPICURIOUS – Contacted on jumping after beginning only fairly. TUHINGA – After beginning only fairly from the wide barrier was restrained in the early stages to obtain a position with cover. HOTSTEP – Began only fairly. Under pressure and shifted wider leaving the 600m. Laid in under pressure in the home straight. LOUVRE LIL – Obliged to momentarily ease and shift away form heels near the 600m. Raced wide and without cover for majority of the event. Apprentice S. Champkin was reprimanded under the provisions of AR132(7)(a)(ii) in that she did use her whip 7 times prior to the 100m, 2 more than permitted, prior to the 100m. Race 8: PUNT 123.BET BENCHMARK 60 Handicap (2000m) THE GOLDEN SOUL – Began very awkwardly. When questioned regarding the poor performance, apprentice Y. Lewis advised that the poor start and subsequently losing ground from the field was the predominant factor in the disappointing performance. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant abnormalities. Trainer G. Cornish was advised a warning would be placed on the gelding’s barrier manners as a result. DEEL WITH ME – Shifted in abruptly under pressure near the 200m before being corrected by its rider. BURY ROAD – Raced wide in the early stages before being permitted to stride forward and obtain a leading position near the 1000m. SANDGATE ROAD – Laid out over the concluding stages. RECALL EVENTS – Raced keenly in the early stages after being crossed passing the winning post on the first occasion.
