STEWARDS REPORT
WARWICK TURF CLUB
WARWICK - TUESDAY 2 APRIL 2024
WEATHER – Fine TRACK RATING – Good 4 RAIL – True
OFFICIALS
Chairman of Stewards – E. Tickner
Stewards – C. Warren, J. Childs, F. Hartford, D. MacDonald & C. Taylor
GENERAL
As Jockey C. Eaton and Apprentice O. Webb were not riding at the meeting due to illness and injury, rider replacements were made as per Stewards race day summary. Both riders were advised they require medical clearances prior to race-riding again.
Stewards permitted the following overweight:
Race 3 – Jockey K Matheson +1kg (55kg)
Given the circumstances surrounding the relocation of the meeting from Dalby to Warwick, which necessitated an alteration to the field limits and distances, Stewards accepted the reasons tendered for late rider declarations throughout the program.
Race 1: MARY BARRY MBE MEMORIAL MAIDEN HANDICAP (1100m)
FLINTON ROAD – Crowded on jumping.
KOBE ASCOT – Shifted out and bumped on jumping.
QUARTER RED – Began awkwardly, shifted in, and bumped. Bumped passing the 1000m and again near the 800m when racing tight with SARA PRONTA. Raced wide from the 600m. Held up for clear running rounding the home turn and in the early stages of the home straight. Bumped passing the 200m.
SARA PRONTA – Began awkwardly and bumped. Bumped passing the 1000m with QUARTER RED. Bumped again approaching the 800m. Checked off heels and lost its rightful running passing the 800m when MORE THAN YOU was dictated inwards by MORE THAN XTRA. Improved onto heels near the 500m having to be momentarily steadied and shifted wider. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
HAIRY BEAN – Raced keenly on heels near the 700m. Laid out passing the 600m.
MORE THAN YOU – Shifted in and bumped on jumping. Dictated inwards and obliged to restrain off heels passing the 800m. Bumped passing the 200m. Raced wide and without cover for majority of the event.
JACKIEDOWNTHELINE – Laid in under pressure in the home straight. Raced wide and without cover for majority of the event.
MORE THAN XTRA – Underwent a pre-race veterinary examination having raced at Nanango on Saturday, 30 March 2024 and was passed fit to start. Jockey M. Savva pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under the provisions of AR131(a) in that passing the 800m she did permit her mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of MORE THAN YOU, causing the runner to be restrained and dictating the line of that runner inwards onto the running of SARA PRONTA which was obliged to check and lost its rightful running. Jockey Savva’s license to ride in races was subsequently suspended for a period of 12 days to commence Sunday, 7 April 2024 up to and including Thursday, 18 April 2024. In determining penalty Stewards determined the degree of carelessness and severity of interference to be in the mid-range, Jockey Savva’s record in relation to the rule, her guilty plea, as well as a minor outward shift from SARA PRONTA leading into the incident which was considered to have marginally exacerbated the interference. Jockey Savva was advised of her right to an appeal.
LADY MANTAGNA – Began awkwardly and bumped. Taken wider by another runner passing the 500m.
Race 2: HENRY (DOC) SMILES MEMORIAL MAIDEN HANDICAP (1100m)
Declaration of correct weight was delayed allowing Stewards to view footage of the start to ensure SUPERSONIC was afforded a fair start. After viewing the official patrol footage, it was determined that SUPERSONIC’s beginning awkwardly and dislodging its rider was solely as a result of its own barrier manners and was therefore declared a runner with correct weight declared on the Judges semaphored numbers.
FIELD OF MARS – Bumped on jumping. Shifted out and away from another runner near the 250m and crowded NIC’S DREAM. Apprentice B. Wheeler was reprimanded under the provisions of AR131(a) as a result of this incident.
WINDY WHEELS – Bumped on jumping. Raced keenly passing the 900m.
BOONAH FLASHER – Fractious in the barrier and became cast. Subsequently declared a late scratching at 1:34pm on veterinary advice. Prior to the declaration of correct weight all monies invested on the filly were ordered to be refunded with the following deductions applicable to all successful wagers placed prior to 1:34pm:
0 cents in the dollar for the win
2 cents in the dollar for the place on the winner
1 cents in the dollar for 2nd place
2 cents in the dollar for 3rd place
Trainer J. Crompton was advised the filly would require a veterinary certificate of fitness and a further barrier certificate prior to again being permitted to start in a race. As the front gates on Barrier 2 were damaged in this incident this barrier was not used for the remainder of the meeting.
SUPERONIC – Reared as the start was effected and dislodged its rider. Trainer J. Bruce was advised the filly would be required to trial to Stewards’ satisfaction prior to racing again. A post-race veterinary examination revealed minor lacerations to the filly’s hind-legs.
NIC'S DREAM – Bumped on jumping. Crowded and obliged to steady passing the 250m. Raced wide and without cover for majority of the event.
JOHNNY UTAH – Bumped on jumping. Raced wide and without cover for majority of the event.

TAKARA STAR – Stewards permitted Jockey J Huxtable to ride 0.5kg over the allocated weight. Jockey Huxtable was fined the sum of $100 under the provisions of AR190(3) for accepting a ride when overweight. Stewards noted Jockey Huxtable’s good recent record in relation to the rule and the specific circumstances.
BRAVE BOY – Buffeted on jumping.
MILAGRO – Shifted out and bumped on jumping. Raced wide and without cover from the 700m.
TOO MUCH MAKEUP – Shifted in and bumped on jumping.

SUPER QUICK – Raced keenly in the early stages.
ULTIMATE – Raced keenly on heels near the 700m and obliged to restrain.
CONTRICK – Stewards permitted the filly to wear the pre-race ear-muffs only after ear-muffs were mistakenly declared as to be raced in on the filly’s gear. This was advertised by way of oncourse announcement. Raced keenly in the early stages. Raced in restricted room for a short distance near the 100m. Apprentice A. Donald was reprimanded under AR131(b) for riding her mounts out fully to the finish. In assessing penalty, Stewards could not be comfortably satisfied her actions had cost her mount fourth.
CRYPT DE PIN – Raced wide and without cover for majority of the event. Laid in under pressure and bumped near the 200m with THOMAS MAX.
MADAM ROCK – Held-up for clear running in the early part of the home straight. Again, disappointed for a run near the 100m. Raced in restricted room thereafter.
THOMAS MAX – Laid-in throughout the event. Hung-in under pressure in the home straight proving difficult to ride out. Bumped near the 200m. Jockey M. Wishart reported that the gelding proved difficult to place under pressure, and when becoming mindful of becoming awkwardly placed on heels, she was unable to fully test her mount in the early part of the home straight.
NAVILLUS BUDDY – Raced keenly in the early stages. Bumped near the 600m with PROPHET OF BOOM.
PROPHET OF BOOM – Bumped near the 600m with NAVILLUS BUDDY. Held-up for clear running from the 400m until the home-turn.
Race 5: DR. IAN KEYS MEMORIAL BENCHMARK 70 HANDICAP (1000m)
Correct weight was delayed allowing Jockey A. Allen and Trainer M. Morrison (AIN’T SHE LOVELY) to view footage of the start.
AL PAL'S GAL – Bumped on jumping. Bumped passing the 800m. Laid out under pressure in the home straight. Raced wide and without cover for majority of the event.
DOLLOP – When asked to comment on the performance, Trainer N. Beck advised that, in his opinion, the step down in class in the event, as well as being first up, which the gelding had seen the gelding previously perform well, were telling factors. He further added the stable had expected a forward showing. Stewards noted the explanation.
AIN'T SHE LOVELY – Bumped heavily on jumping before being crowded and awkwardly placed on heels having to be restrained and losing ground.
FLANK SPEED – Began awkwardly, shifted out abruptly and bumped heavily. Momentarily eased off heels soon after the start. Laid out rounding the home turn. Bumped passing the 200m. Raced wide and without cover for majority of the event.

COPPER SUNSET – Bumped passing the 800m.
Following the running of this event Stewards were advised by Starter Mr C. Higgins that a number of barrier gates were non-operational. Stewards, in conjunction with barrier and club staff, then determined an appropriate course of action to allow for those affected stalls not to be used where possible and whilst remedial efforts were made to repair those affected barriers.
Race 6: TOM FRITH MEMORIAL CLASS 1 HANDICAP (2000m)
IDEEL HERO – Late scratching at 12:55pm on veterinary advice after becoming fractious in the horse transport vehicle enroute to the course. Trainer K. Lees was advised the gelding would require a veterinary certificate prior to again being permitted to start in a race.
BATTALION (NZ) – Jockey L. Tilley reported the gelding may have choked down in running. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.

SUDDEN SUSPECT – Slow to begin.
ROTHESAY'S RUBY – Raced wide in the early stages.
