STEWARDS REPORT

WARWICK TURF CLUB

WARWICK – TUESDAY, 21ST MAY 2024

WEATHER – Fine TRACK RATING – Good 4 RAIL – True

OFFICIAL

Chairman of Stewards – E. Tickner
Stewards – J. Childs, D. Aurisch, K. Daly, D. Macdonald & T. Preston

GENERAL

As both M. Castle and S. Willis were not riding for personal reasons, N Tomizawa was injured, riding changes were made as per the Stewards’ Raceday Summary sheet. N. Tomizawa was advised he would require a medical prior to riding again.

When Jockey J. Huxtable failed to make weight in in races 2,3,7 and 8, Stewards permitted the following replacements:

Race 2, No. 10 STORM DREAMER – J. Bayliss
Race 3, No. 9 ENOLABA – J. Bayliss
Race 7, No. 16 HEARSAY – K. Wilson-Taylor
Race 8, No. 11 SHAPIN POWER – K. Wilson-Taylor

J Huxtable was subsequently fined $500 under AR190(3) for accepting rides when overweight.

Race 1 BRIAN DAVIDSON QTIS TWO-YEARS-OLD MAIDEN HANDICAP (1100m)

Correct weight was delayed allowing Stewards to view the patrol footage approaching the winning post to determine whether CITY UNITED (second place-getter) had carried its weight to the finish of the race. After viewing the available patrol footage, it was established that after CITY UNITED shifted out abruptly approaching the winning post, resulting in Jockey A Thompson being dislodged, Stewards were however of the view that had he maintained contact with the offside rein crossing the finishing line and as such was deemed to have carried its allocated weight under AR209(3). Further, as A. Thompson was being treated on the track by QAS and unable to weigh in, Stewards declared correct weight on the Judges’ semaphored placings under the provisions of AR208(3)(a). A. Thompson was examined by QAS staff including the Racing Queensland Concussion Policy and cleared to fulfill his remaining engagements.

CITY UNITED – Commenced to hang out under pressure in the home straight obliging its rider to stop riding and correct his mount on a number of occasions, before shifting out abruptly over the concluding stages dislodging Jockey A. Thompson approaching the finish line. Trainer L. Birchley was advised CITY UNITED must trial satisfactorily prior to racing again.

MISHANI TITANIUM – Raced wide and without cover in the early stages.

OOHLALOUVRE – Trainer J. Bruce reported on return to the stables subsequent to the event the horse had suffered a one nostril bleed. Mr Bruce was advised the horse must gallop 1000m in the presence of a steward prior to racing again under the provisions of AR79(8).

POPE CODY – Bumped over the concluding stages when racing greenly. When questioned regarding her vigour over the concluding stages, Jockey M. Savva advised the gelding had a tendency to hang-in and therefore proved difficult to ride out. Stewards accepted the explanation.

OLE BAZZLE – From the wide barrier shifted behind runners to obtain a position with cover. Laid out under pressure in home straight.

PUNJABI LANDING – Held-up for clear-running rounding the home turn. Approaching 150m raced in restricted room between runners for a short distance.

THE UNDERGROUND – Raced keenly in the early stages. Over-raced in the early stages and crowded for room when crossed near the 800m. When asked to comment on the apparent improved performance, trainer L. Birchley advised the filly was not suited by the tight turning track at Burrandowan at its most recent start, and was better suited on bigger tracks. He further added the filly had previously been slow to begin, and was advantaged by being able to be ridden more positively in this event. Stewards noted the explanation.

EVERCLEAR – Stewards permitted the late gear change of equicast to be applied to the gelding’s hooves. After being slow to begin was then crowded between runners and lost ground. When questioned regarding his riding from the 400m, Jockey N. Evans explained he was reluctant to improve to the outside of DAWN PARTY at that point of the race as he was of the belief he would be forced wider rounding the home turn. He further added in hindsight that improving to the outside of DAWN PARTY would have resulted in clear running entering the home straight. He further concurred that in hindsight this had resulted in EVERCLEAR then became awkwardly placed at the heels of FICTIVE for a number of strides in the early stages of the home straight and being unable to be fully tested. Shifted wider approaching the 200m to obtain clear running.
