Licensed stablehand Merve Petersen pleaded guilty to a charge under AR228(b) for misconduct, in that subsequent to the running of race 6 he directed foul and abusive language towards Jockey Adam Spinks in the mounting yard. Mr Petersen was fined $800 with $400 suspended for 2 years on the proviso that he does not breach the conduct rules within that period. In assessing penalty stewards took into account Mr Petersen’s forthright evidence, his longstanding good record over 60 years involvement in the industry and his guilty plea. Stewards were also mindful that this incident occurred in proximity and was audible to a number of people, the need for specific and general deterrence and this type of conduct cannot be tolerated.
