SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT

Thangool 14 September 2024
NOEL HOWARD MEMORIAL COUNTRY STAMPEDE QUALIFIER / THANGOOL NEWMARKET OPEN Handicap (1200 METRES)

Stewards today concluded an inquiry into the circumstances in Apprentice J. Devine (DRAGON’S SNIP) being dislodged near the 300m. After hearing all evidence from Apprentice Devine, Jockey P. Hamblin (TIGER LEGEND) and Jockey A. Spinks (DIGGITY) and viewing the available replays, stewards could not be comfortable in determining if any one rider were at fault of the incident. Stewards however reminded all riders of their obligations in ensuring that they are clear of other runners when shifting ground at all times.

GENERAL

Stewards approved the following overweights:

Race 2. Tasha Chambers – +1kg
Race 4. Justin Stanley – +1kg
Tasha Chambers – +1kg
Race 5. Apprentice Jaimee-Lee Devine – +1kg

Apprentice J. Devine was declared the rider for SAVVY MISS in Race 5. Stewards granted permission for Apprentice Devine to ride the mount +1kg due to the fact that she had only recently returned to riding from injury and that there were no other available riders that could take the ride closer to the advertised weight.

Due to transport difficulties regarding delayed flights, stewards approved Jockey L. Tilley to be replaced by Jockey A. Butler on THE HOME TEAM in Race 1.

Race 1: TAB QTIS THREE-YEARS-OLD HANDICAP (1300 Metres)

THE HOME TEAM – Laid in when placed under pressure in the home straight. When questioned regarding the performance in today’s event, Jockey A. Butler stated that THE HOME TEAM was very one paced throughout the event and had failed to respond to his riding urges. Jockey Butler further stated that THE HOME TEAM would benefit a closer inside barrier draw were the gelding would be able to attempt to obtain a position in the lead.

MISHANI DESTINY – Slow to begin. Laid in when placed under pressure in the home straight. When questioned regarding the performance in today’s event, Jockey J. Huxtable stated that the fast pace set in the early stages of the event proved detrimental to MISHANI DESTINY’s chances over the final stages. Jockey Huxtable further added that the gelding did not handle the firmer track conditions. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

BETTER THAN WORDS – Laid in when placed under pressure in the home straight. Jockey R. Wiggins was fined $500 under the provisions of AR132(7)(a)(ii) for using his whip 9 times prior to the 100m, 12 in totality. When determining penalty, stewards were mindful that this was Jockey Wiggins’ first offence in the previous six months.

MOET AT MIDNIGHT – Jumped away awkwardly.

SIMPLY TINA – Slow to begin.

MISHANI OPAL – Raced keenly and wide in the early stages.

Trainer Manzelmann was advised that a warning would be placed on the mare’s record for its racing manners and would be monitored at its next start.

Race 3: GRAEME DOUGAN MEMORIAL BM65 HANDICAP (1800 Metres)

Prior to the declaration of correct weight, stewards viewed the available replays to ascertain if STREET GLORY had gained an advantage at the start. After viewing the replays, stewards determined that STREET GLORY’s barrier gate had opened fractionally earlier due to the mare having lowered its head below the gate and pushing upwards at the time the gates were opening. Due to the fact that STREET GLORY was also awkward and slow away from the remainder of the field, stewards determined that mare had not gained an unfair advantage and correct weight was declared on the judge’s placings.

DEEPSTRIKE (NZ) – Laid in when placed under pressure in the home straight.

TAKE THE LEAD – Jumped away awkwardly.

MOCAMBO – Jumped away awkwardly.

TRICKY BEANS – Slow to begin. Raced wide throughout. When questioned regarding the tactics adopted by Apprentice J. Devine racing three-wide in the early stages of the event, Apprentice Devine, in the presence of Trainer/Master J. Devine, stated that her instructions were after jumping away, assess and settle in the best position possible in that if the gelding jumped away well, look to obtain a positive position or if slow away, settle to the rear of the field. Apprentice Devine added that TRICKY BEANS races one paced and that after beginning slowly, she elected to settle in a rear position three wide. Trainer Devine confirmed the instructions. When questioned whether or not Apprentice Devine could have allowed her mount to settle in a position further forward with cover to the outside of TAKE THE LEAD near the 1500m, Apprentice Devine stated that TRICKY BEANS has a tendency to overrace when being restrained and that the gelding is best ridden free rolling in a tempo where comfortable, therefore allowed her mount to settle and race in the three-wide position. When further questioned whether or not immediate after jumping slowly away Apprentice Devine could have elected to settle in a rear position on the rail, Trainer Devine stated that TRICKY BEANS is a horse that also resents being crowded and confirmed the comments made by Apprentice Devine. Nonetheless, stewards noted the explanation given by Apprentice Devine, however due to her relative inexperience to race riding, stewards determined her culpability to be low and advised that her ride would be referred to the Racing Queensland Apprentice Training Team for review and tuition.

STREET GLORY – Fractious in the barriers prior to jumping. Jumped away awkwardly and as a result was slow to begin. Trainer J. Wigginton was advised that a warning would be placed on the mare’s record for its barrier manners.
