When asked to explain the riding tactics adopted, apprentice A. Thompson explained that his mount put in a number of awkward strides soon after the start and for this reason he rode aggressively and when it was apparent by the 1000m that he was a considerable distance in front of the main body of the field he attempted to restrain the mare but it did not respond to this and as a result overraced from that point until soon after straightening, from which point it weakened and got beaten a considerable distance. He was of the view that the mare may be looking for a spell.
