Steadied approaching the 1000m when placed in restricted room between SORNJA and AWAKE THE STARS, which shifted in. The mare overraced for a short distance following this incident. R. Maloney, the rider of AWAKE THE STARS, was severely reprimanded for shifting ground when not sufficiently clear.

When questioned as to the tactics adopted in the early stages in leading today’s event, jockey J. Byrne stated that it was not his intention to lead, however, after beginning fairly he allowed the mare to stride forward to obtain a position closer to the fence. Jockey Byrne added that as a consequence he found himself in the lead leaving the 1200m and gave consideration to allowing CASINO EVIL to cross forward of him. Given the moderate tempo in the early and middle stages, he was content to remain in the leading position.
