Former Melbourne rider Ryan Maloney was in sparkling form with an early double at the Sunshine Coast on Saturday.
Maloney won aboard the Toby Edmonds-trained From Within in the opening race, the XXXX Take In The Gold Benchmark 70 Handicap (1000m) before backing up to claim the Happy Birthday Sally Class Three Plate (1200m) aboard Tawfiq Boy.
From Within was Maloney’s seventh winner for Edmonds since moving north to settle in Queensland at the start of the season.
Maloney first rode for Edmonds when he won aboard Eptimum in the Group Three Red Anchor Stakes at Moonee Valley last spring.
From Within never looked in doubt leading all the way for a commanding two length win over High Cost.
Dream Kisses was third, a further 1-1/2 lengths away.
It was From Within’s first win since scoring on debut at Rosehill in December, 2016 and her time of 56.61 seconds was only 0.48 seconds outside the track record.
From Within, a $360,000 buy as a yearling, began her career with champion Sydney trainer Chris Waller and started equal favourite when she failed in last year’s Magic Million Classic at the Gold Coast.
After two more failures for Waller, From Within transferred to Randwick trainer Edward O’Rourke but the Not A Single Doubt mare failed in all five appearances for her new trainer before heading north to Toby Edmonds’ Gold Coast stables.
Edmonds’ stable foreman and son, Trent, predicted From Within had a bright future in Queensland.
“She had been with Chris Waller and Ed O’Rourke before she came to us and she’s been a bit tricky to train,” Edmonds said.
“Her trackwork has been fantastic and she’s one of the best workers in the stable.”
Edmonds has no major plans in mind with From Within but he predicted she could make it to open company.
“She’s a machine,” he said.
“There’s nothing big planned for her and we’ll just take her through the grades to open company hopefully.
“She’s got the ability to win a Stakes races in the future.”
