Edwards hopes for breakthrough Ipswich win with Senrima Tide

Deagon trainer Jason Edwards hopes his decision not to use a claiming apprentice on Senrima Tide doesn’t backfire at Ipswich on Friday.

Edwards has only had Senrima Tide for two starts, and is confident the gelding will cope with a big weight on a track currently rated a heavy 10 in the Class 4 Handicap over 1700 metres.

The six-year-old will carry 59kgs and will be ridden by the experienced Michael Cahill.

“I thought a lot about using an apprentice but a few of the owners were keen for Ben Thompson to ride him,” Edwards said.

“Unfortunately, Ben wasn’t available but his manager said Michael was free so we booked him.

“It’s going to be very heavy but I’m confident he’ll handle it.”

Senrima Tide originally hails from Victoria where he won twice in eight starts for Melbourne’s Mick Price before transferring to Murwillumbah trainer Matt Dunn.

After failing to win in eight starts for Dunn, Senrima Tide was offloaded to Chris Meagher who coaxed a further two wins from the son of Ocean Park before he joined Edwards’ stable at Deagon.

“My partner, Faith Elliott, does a lot of riding for Chris Meagher and she rode him in all his work,” Edwards said.

“When she heard he was for sale Faith harassed me every day to buy him and we got him for $20,000.

“Faith is a pretty good judge and when he came to me, he was in immaculate condition and he’s going well.

“A physiotherapist looked after him when Chris Meagher had him and he’s a part-owner who has stayed in his ownership with us.”

Senrima Tide has been placed at his only two starts for Edwards - at the Sunshine Coast last month before a last start third to the Greg Booth-trained Captivator in a Class 5 over 1608 metres on March 13.

Senrima Tide was beaten only one length last start after racing midfield most of the way for jockey Girish Goomany.
