Morrisey hopes his dry spell is over with help of Fradd

Gold Coast trainer Scott Morrisey can feel a winner coming on – well, at least he hopes so.

Morrisey will head to Doomben on Wednesday with a team of five starters and hopes to walk away with a winner or two.

Morrisey admits he’s been having a dry run of late but has given punters a strong lead, naming Kingscote and Bonnie Ev as his two best hopes.

Kingscote - a Robbie Fradd mount – tackles the males division of the Class 1 Handicap over 1200 metres while the former South African jockey also partners Bonnie Ev in the filly’s division.

Kingscote has placed in four of her last five starts including her latest appearance when second to the Brian Smith-trained Super Gorgeous in an 1100-metre Class 1 Handicap at Ipswich last month.

“He’s been very unlucky and should have won last start when he was just beaten,” Morrisey said.

“Unfortunately, when I think I can win a race I get my usual barrier - nine out of nine.

“I’ve got five horses running at Doomben and I’m looking for a change of luck after just getting beaten a few times of late.

“When your luck is in, photo finishes seem to go your way and when it’s out, they don’t.”

Morrisey had adopted a gear change to help Bonnie Ev breakthrough for the second time at her seventh start.

Bonnie Ev resumed with a close third to Dubai Star in an 1110-metre Class 1 at Doomben on June 23 before a last start fourth to the Lindsay Hatch-trained Befana in a Class 4 over 1200 metres at Ipswich on August 5.

“I’m going to put blinkers on her for the first time tomorrow,” Morrisey said.

“Her first up run was very good but she was a little disappointing second-up.

“It was no-one’s fault but she probably raced a little too close last start and she’ll go better if ridden a bit quieter.”

Morrisey also won’t be surprised to see Go Darcy run an improved race in the Benchmark 70 Handicap over 2030 metres.

Go Darcy is having his third run back from a break and is coming off a last start fourth behind Ready To Rumble in a 1400-metre Class 4 at the Gold Coast in July 31.

“He’s starting to get up to his right distance so I won’t be surprised to see him run a better race,” he said.

“But he might need this run to top him off.”
