CLAUDIUS – Slow to begin and lost ground when unable to muster early speed. When questioned regarding the tactics adopted, apprentice C. Sutherland stated after being slow to begin, he was mindful of not being back in the field receiving kickback and therefore placed his mount under pressure to obtain a forward position. He added that after obtaining a leading position near the 850m, he allowed his mount to continue to stride forward whilst traveling comfortably on the bridle, however CLAUDIUS became under pressure at the 600m and failed to finish the race off as he had hoped. Trainer P. Duff stated the gelding does have tendency to miss the start and that when placed under pressure early can over race and has proven difficult to ride in the past. After reviewing the Stewards footage, apprentice Sutherland agreed with Stewards that he had erred in not attempting to settle his mount and take up a position on the back of the leader RASHEED approaching the 850m, in preference to continue to let the gelding stride forward, which may have assisted CLAUDIUS in being able to finish the race off stronger. Stewards however considered apprentice Sutherland’s relative inexperience, the racing manners of the horse as provided by Mr P. Duff and therefore took no further action. Apprentice C. Sutherland pleaded guilty to a charge under the provisions of AR132(7)(a)(ii) in that he used his whip on seventeen occasions prior to the 100m, which is twelve more than permitted.
