GENERAL

As apprentice T. Brooker was indisposed due to personal reasons and B. Stewart was ill, riding replacements were made as per the Stewards Race Day Summary.

Race 1: QPSIG MAIDEN H’CAP – 1650M

The declaration of correct weight was delayed to allow the connections of TE RANGI to view the photo finish for 2nd. After viewing the print, they were satisfied with the Judge’s placings and correct weight was declared.

ONE UP – Began awkwardly. Had to be steadied after passing the winning post on the first occasion when the pace slackened. Raced three wide from the 1000m. Had a tendency to hang out from the 600m to the home turn. Apprentice S. Eilbeck reported that the gelding was not suited by the tempo of today’s race. She added that when the pace slowed in the early stages she was obliged to restrain the gelding and from that point it raced ungenerously and was inclined to hang out and as a consequence was forced to race wide for the majority of the event.

MAJESTIC SHADOW – Apprentice J. Orman was cautioned regarding the rate at which he slowed the tempo of the race in the early stages.

TEQUILA SLAMMER – Had to be steadied after passing the winning post on the first occasion when the pace slackened.

FLYNN EFFECT – Had to be steadied after passing the winning post on the first occasion when the pace slackened.

PILLSBURY LANE – Forced wide rounding the turn out of the straight on the first occasion.

TE RANGI – Slow to begin. Forced wider rounding the turn out of the straight on the first occasion.

TREVLYN’S COL – Overraced after rounding the turn out of the straight on the first occasion and had a tendency to lay out and in doing so had to steady from the heels of PILLSBURY LANE near the 1400m. Apprentice B. Appo was cautioned regarding the rate at which he slowed the tempo of the race in the early stages.

Race 2: CLEAR SUMMER LODGE CLASS 3 PLATE – 1650M

CASHINKO – Shifted in marginally after passing the 400m and made contact with another runner. Bumped with another runner at the 100m.

MOUNT PERRY – Bumped with another runner at the 100m.

MR LIGHTNING – Had to be eased when placed in restricted room approaching the 100m. Trainer B. Herne was fined $200 for failing to apply bandages to the horse in accordance with the rules.

CAMBO’S MATE – Raced three wide without cover from the 900m and was forced four wide by another runner at the 600m.

MISHANI DE NIRO – Began awkwardly. Had to steady when placed awkwardly inside another runner after passing the 400m.

HAVANA CIGAR – Raced wide rounding the first turn. Hung in under pressure in the home straight, resulting in jockey N. Day being unable to fully test his mount.

Following the running of this event the track was downgraded to SOFT 7.

Race 3: BARRIER REEF POOLS RATINGS BAND 0-60 H'CAP – 1050M

As betting had not commenced on this race at the time of the late scratching of SURPRISE RESULT, no deductions were applicable to bets.

SINE TIMORE – Slow into stride. Raced wide for the majority of the event and was then forced wide on the track by another runner after passing the 600m. When questioned regarding the horse’s performance, T. Harrison stated that her mount travelled reasonably well and handles wet track conditions, however was struggling after passing the 600m and failed to respond to her urging and was disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings. Trainer R. Wilson’s stable representative was of the view that the gelding may have choked down when being restrained in the early stages, which possibly explained today’s disappointing performance, and in light of this undertook to have an endoscopic examination performed on the horse, the results of which will be provided to stewards.

SURPRISE RESULT – Late scratching at 1.03 pm following the downgrading of the track.

MULTIFOCAL – Raced three wide without cover throughout.

Following the running of this event the track was further downgraded to HEAVY 8.

Race 4: RAILWAY HOTEL CLASS 5 H'CAP – 1050M

IONA FAST ONE – Raced wide in the early stages.

NATURAL DANCER – Lost the near fore plate in running.

SHOW HARMONY – Laid in under pressure over the concluding stages.

SAVANNAH DREAM – Blundered shortly after jumping.

Following this event a number of riders expressed concerns regarding their visibility during the running of the race due to heavy rain falling. However, as the rain had eased following the event, riders were comfortable with continuing to ride at the meeting, with the situation to be assessed on a race-by-race basis depending on rainfall.

The track was downgraded to HEAVY 9 at 2.18 pm.

Race 5: XXXX MAIDEN H’CAP – 1110M

Stewards permitted the late scratching of MANDRILLE at 2.20 pm following the downgrading of the track at 2.18 pm. Stewards ordered that all monies invested on MANDRILLE be refunded, with the following deductions to apply to wagers placed prior to 2.20 pm.:

18 cents in the dollar for the Win #4
16 cents in the dollar for place of winner #4
19 cents in the dollar for 2nd place #5
18 cents in the dollar for 3rd place #13

The start of this race was delayed when STAR OF PIAF proved difficult to load.

DEVIL’S RUM – Raced wide without cover throughout. Inclined to lay in under pressure over the concluding stages.

STAR OF PIAF – Raced wide after passing the 700m.

MOUNTAIN OF GRACE – Jumped in at the start, bumping another runner.

LOUISE THIRTEEN – As the mare had not raced since September 2014, it underwent a veterinary examination prior to the race and was cleared to take its place in the field. Began awkwardly and was then bumped shortly after the start.

MAITLAND GEM – Slow to begin.

MISHANI SCOUT – Slow to begin. Raced wide after passing the 700m.

Race 6: BEAUDESERT SOFT DRINKS QTIS 3YO BM62 H'CAP – 1200M

Due to transport difficulties, J. Hoopert was unable to fulfil his engagement on CLOSE ENOUGH and was replaced by A. Badger.

LORD TSCHARKE – Slow to begin. Apprentice S. Eilbeck reported at scale that although her mount led today’s event, it did not feel total comfortable in the heavy conditions and when placed under pressure failed to respond and, notwithstanding its 3rd placing, proved disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination revealed minor lacerations to the near hind leg which may have had some bearing on its performance today.

RALPH THE DRAGON – Overraced in the early stages. Had to be steadied after improving on to the heels of another runner approaching the home turn.

MISHANI NEFERTITI – Slow to begin.

CLOSE ENOUGH – Hung out after passing the 700m.

Race 7: ANZAC DAY RACES CLASS 2 H'CAP – 1200M

The declaration of correct weight was delayed to allow the connections of DANGEROUS LIGHT to view the photo finish of the dead heat for 4th. After viewing the print, they were satisfied with the Judge’s placings and correct weight was declared.

LAIKA GORDO – Slow to begin and was then crowded for room between TRUST NO ONE and OUT LATE, both of which shifted ground.

CHASTE ANGEL – Raced wide without cover throughout. Apprentice B. Ainsworth was reminded of her obligation to ride her mounts out to the end of the race.

MINKUS – Late scratching at 2.28 pm due to the track downgrade to HEAVY 9.

DANGEROUS LIGHT – Slow to begin. When questioned, rider A. Badger stated that after being slow to muster speed in the early stages in the heavy conditions, her mount failed to maintain a position on the back of the field and it was not until after shifting the horse wider after passing the 600m that it commenced to respond to her riding, and in the straight finished the race off reasonably well. She added that in her opinion the horse would appreciate races over a longer distance than that of today’ event. Stewards noted her explanation.
