STEWARDS REPORT

CHINCHILLA RACE CLUB

CHINCHILLA – SATURDAY, 15 MARCH 2025

WEATHER – FINE TRACK RATING –  GOOD 3       RAIL – TRUE

OFFICIALS

Chairman of Stewards – E. Tickner
Stewards – S. Coulthard & D. MacDonald

GENERAL

The track was upgraded to a Good 3 at 10:30am.

Trainer representative G. Geran on behalf of trainers’ C. & K. Geran was reprimanded under the provisions of LR30 for failing to present HIGHFIELDS and REVALOT on course by the prescribed time. In assessing the matter, Stewards noted that it had been a genuine oversight by the stable in relation to the TAB status of the meeting. Both runners underwent pre-race veterinary examinations inclusive of blood samples and were cleared to start.

Following the incident in Race 1, and the QAS Officers then further being required to attend to an on-course patron, the program was delayed. Races 2-5 were pushed back one time slot, and race 6 was scheduled to run at 4:26pm.

Race 1: BASE CAMP MAIDEN PLATE (1400m)

KANSAS SUN – Laid in when placed under pressure on the home straight.

SAMPHIRE GREEN (IRE) – Slow to begin (3L) and subsequently settled further back than may have been expected. Trainer R. Hay was advised that a warning would be placed on the gelding’s record. Commenced to over-race in the early stages, before near the 1300m, steadied off the heels of THUNDER SHANGHAI and blundered. Raced keenly for some distance thereafter. When asked to comment on the performance, Apprentice C. Lowe advised that the poor start proved detrimental to the gelding’s finishing efforts.

SWIFT SON – Began awkwardly and bumped HIGHFIELDS, before being buffeted between runners. Laid in when placed under pressure in the home straight.

MONTEVECCHIO – Raced wide and without cover for majority of the event.

REVALOT – Raced keenly in the early stages.

MONGOLIAN FLAME (NZ) – Began awkwardly. Raced keenly in the early stages. Near the 400m, became awkward in its action, and when being eased out of the event, faltered and fell dislodging Jockey W. O’Connell. An immediate veterinary examination revealed a catastrophic injury to the off-foreleg, and the mare was subsequently euthanised on humane grounds. Post-mortem samples were taken for analysis. Jockey W. O’Connell was examined by QAS officers inclusive of the Racing Queensland Concussion Policy and cleared to fulfill his remaining engagements.

THUNDER SHANGHAI – Slow to begin. Shifted out near the 1300m when not fully clear of SAMPHIRE GREEN (NZ) which was obliged to steady and blundered. Jockey M. Kennedy was reprimanded under the provisions of AR131(a) for careless riding. In assessing the matter, Stewards noted that the racing manners of SAMPHIRE GREEN had exacerbated the incident. Laid in when placed under pressure in the home straight.

HIGHFIELDS – Obliged to shift in and alter course near the 400m when MONGOLIAN FLAME was being eased out of the event.

Following the running of this race, the section of the track near the 400m was examined by Stewards which subsequently identified no issues with the racing surface.

Race 2: ARRG BENCHMARK 60 HANDICAP  (1070m)

PERMANENCE – Laid in when placed under pressure in the home straight.

ZENA BOY – Shifted in near the 100m despite the efforts of its rider, carrying MISS HELMUT in momentarily. Laid in when placed under pressure thereafter.

BUCKALTIUS – Raced keenly in the early stages. When asked to comment on the performance, Jockey P. Hamblin advised that the gelding travelled well in the early stages, however proved disappointing when placed under pressure in the home straight. He further added in his opinion, the gelding would be better suited over further distances. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant abnormalities.

SEA COMMITS – Laid out rounding the home-turn.

NICCI DE ROSA – Began awkwardly and bumped GREEN PARK. Near the 900m, shifted in when not fully clear of GREEN PARK which was obliged to steady. Apprentice C. Stuart was reprimanded under the provisions of AR131(a) for careless riding. When asked to comment on the mare settling further back than may have been expected, Apprentice C. Stuart advised that the mare had not shown its usual customary early pace and subsequently had settled further back on this occasion.

RUMI STAR – Began awkwardly. Shifted out under pressure over the concluding stages. Apprentice S. Willis was advised to stop and straighten her mounts when they commence to shift ground in a similar manner.

Race 4: AUS IT TECH DIRECT QTIS RATINGS BAND 0 - 55 HANDICAP (1070m)

MISS MOSCATO – Laid in when placed under pressure over the concluding stages carrying CRAIGLEA THERA inwards.

CRAIGLEA THERA – Crowded soon after the start when EASY COME hung-in. Carried wider passing the 900m when MERCHANT MOON hung-out for some distance. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to have bled from both nostrils for the first occasion. Trainer K. Johnston was advised of the provisions of AR79(4).

EASY COME – Hung-in soon after the start crowding CRAIGLEA THERA inwards. When asked to comment on the performance, Jockey M. Savva advised in her opinion, the gelding, which was first-up for the preparation, would derive significant fitness benefit.

INHISTIME – When Apprentice R. Thorburn was unable to claim his full allowance, Stewards permitted Apprentice S. Willis to be declared the replacement rider. Apprentice Thorburn was subsequently reprimanded under the provisions of AR143(14)(a) for being unable to claim and being replaced on the gelding. In assessing the matter, Stewards noted that this was Apprentice Thorburn’s first breach of the rule. BARCLAY'S BANK – Slow to begin.

SUENITO – Began awkwardly. Raced wide and without cover for majority of the event. Hung-out rounding the home-turn. Jockey M. Kennedy reported that the gelding made an upper-respiratory noise throughout the event. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
