GENERAL
All riders engaged at this meeting provided a sample of their breath for analysis, which returned negative results.
Race 1: Tox Free 2-Y-O Handicap - 950 metres
1st CRAIGLEA ZIP 2nd NIC'S DRAGON 3rd RYLEE'S SAGA 4th - CRAIGLEA DIAMOND
CRAIGLEA GEM - Missed the start (2 lengths). Approaching the 600 metres improved into a narrow run to the inside of another runner and had to be steadied.
NIC'S DRAGON - Had difficulty obtaining clear running in the early part of the home straight.
CRAIGLEA RUSH - Brushed the running rail shortly after straightening for home.
RYLEE'S SAGA - Raced keenly throughout the early and middle stages.
CRAIGLEA DIAMOND - On returning to scale the rider reported that his mount jumped the crossing near the 600 metres, resulting in him becoming unbalanced and losing ground.
Race 2: Jack Wilson Memorial Class 1 Handicap - 950 metres
1st BAZZA'S BID 2nd STANFORD 3rd MOCKBA 4th - RATSTAN
SHE CAN TWIST - Refused to load. Late scratching at 12.56 p.m. Trainer G. Porter was advised that the filly must perform satisfactorily in a barrier trial before being permitted to race again.
SUNSET IN NEW YORK - Was fractious in the barriers. The filly was examined by the Club's veterinary surgeon and, acting on her advice, stewards ordered the withdrawal of SUNSET IN NEW YORK at 12.56 p.m. Trainer R. Baker was advised that the filly must perform to the satisfaction of the stewards in a barrier trial before being permitted to race again.
Stewards ordered that all bets made on SHE CAN TWIST and SUNSET IN NEW YORK be refunded in full and that the following deductions apply in respect of the late scratching of both horses:
42¢ in the dollar for the win for the winner, BAZZA'S BID
33¢ in the dollar for the place for the winner, BAZZA'S BID
46¢ in the dollar for the place for 2nd, STANDFORD.
MOCKBA - Stood flat-footed at the start and lost considerable ground (3 lengths). Inclined to lay out rounding the home turn. Trainer Mr T. Rowe was told that a warning will be placed on the gelding and should it perform similarly in the future, it will be returned to barrier trials to remedy its racing manners.
STANDFORD - In the early stages was reluctant to stretch out.
Race 3: Manoverboard, Macrossan St Port Douglas Open Handicap - 1250 metres
1st BOOM SHA LA 2nd BOLT FROM THE BLUE 3rd CANHEDANCE 4th - PANECILLO
PANECILLO - Began awkwardly.
CARAVAN SANG - Began awkwardly with its head up.
RATTUS CONATUS - Rounding the first turn, near the 900 metres, was inclined to lay out.
CANHEDANCE - Raced keenly in the middle stages and rounding the home turn laid out.
Race 4: Harold McDonald Memorial Maiden Handicap - 1250 metres
1st KING OF THEBES 2nd DRAGON HART 3rd MAKING HEADLINES 4th - WHISPERS
EFFERVESCENT - Prior to the race connections advised stewards that the filly will be ridden further forward today, if circumstances permit. The filly was ridden accordingly.
OLD RED - Began awkwardly.
WHISPERS - Over the concluding stages was inclined to lay out.
MR WRECKER - Shifted in abruptly at the start.
Rounding the turn near the 900 metres MR WRECKER, which was racing greenly, shifted in and made contact with DRAGON HART, then became unbalanced and had to be checked, and in doing so was taken out across the heels of WHISPERS, further crowding the running of FAVOURED ONE. As a result, both runners had to be severely checked and lost considerable ground. OLD RED, which was following, was hampered and taken wider as a consequence. A post-race veterinary examination revealed that MR WRECKER had sustained superficial lacerations to the near foreleg.
Race 5: Manoverboard, The Pier Cairns BenchMark 70 Handicap - 1500 metres
1st JAMALKA 2nd GLADIUS 3rd RISE TO THE TOP 4th - FLAG FAVOURITE
RISE TO THE TOP - When the pace was slow in the early and middle stages the gelding over-raced and refused to settle. App. S. Shimizu was cautioned under A.R.137A(4)(b) for using his whip in an action that raised his arm above shoulder height.
Race 6: Merry Christmas From The CJC BenchMark 60 Handicap - 1400 metres
1st MARKAZY 2nd WICKED THOUGHTS 3rd TETE DE SEAU 4th - SIDADA
SIDADA - Slow to begin.
Race 7: Carlton Mid Class 3 Plate - 1250 metres
1st MR HONOR 2nd GUNDY STAR 3rd DANARULE 4th - MIATA
SPEED DRAGON - Made the first turn, near the 900 metres, awkwardly.
FOUR JAYS - Made the first turn, near the 900 metres, awkwardly. Held up and unable to obtain clear running in the early part of the home straight.
