Palmer RACE 1: Underwood Maiden Plate - 1250 metres1st - SHEER PERSISTENCE 2nd - SECOND TIME AROUND 3rd - PEARLY AVENUE 4th - DEVASTATING RHYTHM CLEVFILLY - Slow to begin. TRY BEFORE DUBAI - Slow to begin. SECRET RECIPE - Made the first turn, near the 1000 metres, awkwardly. PEARLY AVENUE - Made the first turn, near the 1000 metres, awkwardly and was then awkwardly placed on the heels of SHEER PERSISTENCEand was inclined to race keenly and wide without cover thereafter. HEZLETT - Held up rounding the home turn. Approaching the 200 metres was awkwardly placed on the heels of PEARLY AVENUE and had to be shifted to the inside to obtain clear running. Jockey R. Thompson pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under A.R. 137(a) in that rounding the turn near the 500 metres he allowed SHEER PERSISTENCE to shift in and crowd CLEVFILLY (Jockey S. Wilson) in onto SECRET RECIPE (Jockey K. Rockett), which was hampered DIAMONDNET (Jockey G. Kliese), which was following had to be severely checked clipped heels and blundered. TRY BEFORE DUBAI (Apprentice L. Attard), was also crowded as a consequence. Jockey Thompson was severely reprimanded. In assessing penalty stewards took into account Jockey Thompson's exemplary record, that being that he has not incurred a suspension of his licence for careless riding since 2007. Following the running of this race the track rating was upgraded to GOOD 4. RACE 2: Yellowglen BenchMark 60 Handicap - 950 metres1st - EFFIGY BELLE 2nd - TIERES ROCK 3rd - GOLD RUST 4th - FIVE STARS FIVE STARS - Slow to begin. MY GIRL'S A DRAGON - Crowded for room shortly after the start. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of the filly, Jockey T. Treichel said that, although his mount was in a prominent position throughout, it was constantly under pressure and never travelled comfortably at any stage. A post-race veterinary examination of the filly did not reveal any abnormalities. RACE 3: Green Island Resort QTIS 3-Y-O Maiden Handicap - 950 metres1st - ROUGE LASS 2nd - NEW CALEDONIA 3rd - GRACIOUS FURI 4th - ROTHESAY SPECIAL At the start SHADOW BOLT (Jockey N. Day) shifted in and made heavy contact with GRACIOUS FURI (Jockey J. Lambie). Passing the 600 metres, whilst racing ungenerously, GRACIOUS FURI shifted out and made heavy contact with the hindquarters of SHADOW BOLT. For some distance after this GRACIOUS FURI continued to race ungenerously and again shifted out and made contact with the hindquarters of SHADOW BOLT. Approaching the 200 metres GRACIOUS FURI shifted in and had to be momentarily steadied when awkwardly placed on the heels of NEW CALEDONIA. DRAGON ROCKET - Made the home turn awkwardly and was held up on the heels of NEED FINANCE. BIT BY BIT - Hung out rounding the home turn. ALPINE MAGIC - On returning to scale Jockey P. Cullen reported that his mount raced very greenly throughout. ROUGE LASS - When questioned regarding the improved performance of the filly, Trainer Mr J. Manzelmann said that he could offer no explanation other than that following its most recent start the filly was treated for a foot abscess. Mr Manzelmann was reminded of his obligation under A.R. 140(a) to inform stewards of any occurrence that may affect a horse's performance. RACE 4: Carlton Mid Open Handicap - 950 metres 1st - SPORTING PAGE 2nd - ANZUS 3rd - WISHFUL 4th - MAN OF DESTINY WRITTEN INTENT - Prior to the start being effected, broke through the front of the gates on two occasions, was quickly restrained, examined by the Club's veterinary surgeon and cleared to take its place in the field. ANZUS - Raced wide throughout. WISHFUL - Raced wide throughout. RACE 5: The Reef Hotel Casino Governor's Trophy BenchMark 70 Handicap - 1600 metres1st - ROCHALLOR 2nd - HILARIOUS HONOUR 3rd - BO ROSSA 4th - SUNBURY STANDFORD - Slow to begin. Approaching the first turn, near the 1400 metres, FOREST WAY (Jockey G. Kliese) took charge of its rider, hung out and made the first turn awkwardly. SIX BEAT (Apprentice C. Jokic), which was following, was hampered. For a considerable distance after this FOREST WAY continued to over-race and refused to settle.RACE 6: ALSCO Class 1 Handicap - 1250 metres1st - HITCH 'EM UP 2nd - SCHREIBER 3rd - PANDAMAN 4th - EGIPTIENNE HOW ABOUT ME - Slow to begin. HIDDEN REIGN - Began very awkwardly. CAPE LUCK - Raced wide without cover throughout. SCHREIBER - Crowded for room at the start. Held up in the home straight and did not obtain clear running until inside the final 100 metres. SLIPPERY SAGA - Made the first turn awkwardly. HITCH 'EM UP - When questioned regarding the improved performance, trainer Mr S. Massingham explained that at the gelding's most recent start, when ridden by an inexperienced apprentice, the gelding was crowded at the start and settled further back than anticipated, however ran to the finish well on that occasion. He said that the gelding derived benefit from having an experienced rider today and from being able to obtain a prominent position in the early stages. ELEMENT OF CHANCE - When questioned regarding racing back in the field, Apprentice R. Payne said that she had intended to ride the gelding in a forward position, in accordance with its established racing pattern, however after standing awkwardly in the gates was marginallly slow to begin and shortly afterwards, when her mount shifted in and crowded the running of STANDFORD (Jockey P. Cullen) to her inside, she was obliged to stop riding and straighten and, as a result, settled further back than expected. Apprentice Payne added that when racing at the tail of the field her mount never travelled comfortably and was constantly under pressure. However, inside the final 200 metres ELEMENT OF CHANCE responded to her riding and ran to the finish strongly. Race 7: Cairns Key Real Estate Class 3 Handicap - 1400 metres1st - GREAT PRETENDER 2nd - YOU CAN'T FIND ME 3rd - FORTUNE MASCOT 4th - GLOBAL GURU DAZZLING PRIDE - Slow to begin. GLOBAL GURU - Slow to begin. Rounding the home turn was held up on heels, shifted out abruptly and crowded I'M RURRBELLIOUS (Jockey K. Stone). CRAIGLEA ALDI - Raced wide without cover throughout. Shortly after straaightening had to be steadied when momentarily crowded. SHOWMORE - Jockey N. Yadi accidentally dropped his whip near the 50 metres.
