Race 1: DES LAMBART MEMORIAL BENCHMARK 80 H’CAP – 2200M

SAN TELMO – Hampered at the start.

MONTEUX – After being brushed by SHOTACROSS THE BOW over the final stages, attempted to savage that runner. Trainer C. Meagher’s representative was advised that the horse must trial officially before racing again.

DENBERN – Had to be steadied near the 250m when attempting a narrow run to the inside of MORNINGTON when that runner shifted in slightly.

EXPLOSIVE ONE – After being a little slow to begin was checked soon after the start when tightened for room. Held up for clear running in the home straight until leaving the 100m and then had to alter course wider on the track in order to improve.

HIGH DEGREE – Had to be restrained from the heels of LA FIREBIRD near the 1500m. Tightened for room near the 250m. When asked to explain the horse’s performance, J. Oliver stated that he was disappointed with its finishing effort and added that the horse is better suited on rain-affected tracks. Jockey Oliver indicated that connections had advised him that the mare will now be sent for a spell. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings.

SHOTACROSS THE BOW – Raced three wide without cover. J. Lloyd reported at scale that  his mount hung in for a major part of the race. Shifted in over the final stages and brushed MONTEUX. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings.

Following the running of this event the track was upgraded to GOOD 3.

Race 3: TRIPLE M’S RICH UNCLE MAL’S OPEN H’CAP – 1200M

TUMBLER – Apprentice C. Bayliss pleaded guilty to a charge under AR. 135(b) of failing to take all reasonable and permissible measures throughout the race to ensure that his horse was given full opportunity to win or to obtain the best possible place in the field. The particulars of the charge being that (1) from the 500m to the 400m he failed to shift TUMBLER wider on the track when it was reasonable and permissible to do so to ensure that TUMBLER had every opportunity to improve into the race and secure clear running in the home straight. (2) Between the 400m and the 300m he failed to shift TUMBLER wider and improve into a run between NICCANOVA and APOLOBOOM when that run was at all times available and it was reasonable and permissible to do so. In the opinion of the stewards, these failures as particularised have resulted in TUMBLER not being given full opportunity to win the race. Apprentice Bayliss’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 6 weeks, to commence at midnight on Wednesday 25 July and expire at midnight on Wednesday 5 September 2018. In determining penalty, stewards took into account apprentice Bayliss’s guilty plea, his record, having previously been penalised for a breach of this rule, and his relative inexperience in riding in the metropolitan area.

APOLOBOOM – Raced three wide without cover.

COURTZA KING – J. Byrne reported at scale that it was not his intention to lead, but after beginning well he found himself in the lead and as no other runner contested that position, he raced in the lead throughout.

Race 4: LAZY YAK BENCHMARK 75 H’CAP – 1600M

LORD COCONUTS – Held up rounding the home turn.

VAULTING AMBITION – Inclined to lay in under pressure in the home straight and was bumped by another runner over the final stages.

LIKE A RULER – Had to be restrained from the heels of GLITRA near the 600m. Shifted out and bumped VAULTING AMBITION over the final stages.

MEWSTONE ROCK – Tightened for room a short distance after the start.

PRESSWAY – Inclined to hang in under pressure over the final 200m.

CLEVER BLAZE – Commenced to overrace when the pace slowed in the middle stages and had to be restrained from heels and as a result shifted wider and raced three wide for the remainder of the event. Inconvenienced over the final stages when bumped by GODZONE GIRL.

GODZONE GIRL – Overraced in the middle stages. Had difficulty securing clear running in the home straight and over the final stages had to be restrained from heels when disappointed for clear running.

Race 6: UBET CLASS 6 H’CAP – 1350M

The declaration of correct weight was delayed to allow M. McGillivray, the rider of 4th placegetter ORIENTAL RUNNER, to view the stewards’ patrol footage near the 800m.

The start of this race was delayed considerably when ALL THAT IS, which cast the near fore plate on the way to the barriers, had to be attended to by the Club farrier and cleared to race.

BERGERAC – Slow to begin. Bumped heavily by another runner near the 800m.

BEL BURGESS – A post-race veterinary examination revealed a superficial wound on the nearside hind coronet, however the horse was not found to be lame.

ESTIKHRAAJ – Held up rounding the home turn.

PRIORITISE – Raced three wide throughout.

ORIENTAL RUNNER – Improved onto the heels of BEL BURGESS approaching the 800m when that runner was steadied by its rider, clipped the heels of BEL BURGESS and as a result shifted out and made heavy contact with BERGERAC.

ALL THAT IS – Raced three wide. Tightened for room near the 150m between PRIORITISE and ORIENTAL RUNNER, which shifted out.

Race 7: G.H. MUMM QTIS 3YO CLASS 6 PLATE – 1200M

CONSPICUOUS – Trainer B. Lockwood reported that it was not the intention for the horse to race outside the leader, however after being in a favourable position after jumping from the wide draw the horse was allowed to stride forward and it then overraced in the early and middle stages. Had to be checked near the 700m to avoid the heels of EASY BEAST, which shifted in when not clear. T. Harrison, the rider of EASY BEAST, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) for causing the interference to CONSPICUOUS and her licence to ride in races was suspended for 11 days, to commence at midnight on Sunday 22 July and expire at midnight on Thursday 2 August 2018. In determining penalty, stewards took into account jockey Harrison’s good record and that the carelessness was in the mid range and the interference was in the low range.

PINCH PASSION – Had to be restrained from heels near the 700m.

DIVINE MESSENGER – Overraced in the early stages.

LA VIDA LOCA – Raced three wide without cover.

MEIKAS – Trainer R. Heathcote advised that it would be the intention to have the horse ridden more forward today. The horse was ridden forward, however when forced to race three wide the rider elected to obtain cover midfield.

Race 8: WINNING EDGE PRESENTATIONS CLASS 3 PLATE – 1350M

REIBY THE RED – Had to be checked when tightened for room near the 1000m.

SCALLOPINI – After being a little slow to begin, was hampered soon after the start. Restrained when overracing near the 800m. Held up for clear running rounding the home turn and in the early part of the home straight and near the 250m had to be checked.
