GENERAL:

As App A. Denby was injured at the Sunshine Coast meeting on 26 February 2016 stewards permitted rider replacements as per the Stewards Race Day Summary. As no claiming apprentices were available in some of the races stewards permitted senior riders as replacements.


Race 1: Commercial Kitchen Company Fillies & Mares Class 1 H’Cap – 1400m
1st – Sugar Hit 2nd – Marlene Adele 3rd – Caviar Girl 4th – Queen Of The Ark

SUGAR HIT – Bumped on jumping away.
LATCHY’S GIRL – Bumped on jumping away. When questioned as to the performance jockey D. Griffin expressed his disappointment in the performance but was unable to offer any tangible explanation. Jockey Griffin indicated that the mare would now be sent for a spell. Trainer L. Hatch stated that the mare appeared to race flat today and as such would monitor its progress following the race before deciding whether to give it a freshen up or send it for a spell.

QUEEN OF THE ARK – Bumped by SUGAR HIT leaving the 500m.


Race 2: Etsu Maiden H’Cap – 1800m
1st – Really Sure 2nd – Hoagy 3rd – Tonna Power 4th – Watched

HOAGY – Slow to begin.

GILLTOWN – Slow to begin. A post race veterinary examination of the gelding, which finished a distant last, revealed no significant abnormalities. Trainer B. Laming advised that he would recommend to connections that the gelding be retired.

JAM WITH THE DUKE – Hampered shortly after the start when tightened for room. Hung out rounding the home turn.

FLYNN EFFECT – Raced wide early before being ridden forward to the lead leaving the 1300m.

NAYTELLRHI MISS – Overraced in the early stages. Near the 100m was disappointed for a run and then obliged to shift in to secure clear running.

THE CABARITA KID – Passing the 1200m improved onto heels and had to be steadied.

TONNA POWER – Bumped rounding the home turn.

HARD EVIDENCE – Bumped rounding the home turn. Inclined to hang in for the majority of the event placing its rider at a disadvantage from riding the horse out with his usual vigour in the home straight.


Race 3: Glass Dining & Lounge Bar Maiden H’Cap – 1100m
1st – Johnny Be Quick 2nd – Duble Meaning 3rd – French Charm 4th – Here’s To Luxury

MAITLAND GEM was declared a late scratching at 1.32 p.m. by order of stewards after failing to arrive on course. As betting had not commenced on course no deductions were ordered.

The start was delayed when GEE STING broke through the barriers and in doing so dislodged jockey A. Spinks. After galloping a considerable distance the horse was subsequently declared a late scratching at 1.59 p.m. All monies invested on GEE STING were ordered to be refunded. Deductions applicable to bets placed on the winner and place-getters prior to 1.59 p.m.:

7 cents in the dollar for the win - # 4 (JOHNNY BE QUICK)
13 cents in the dollar for the place of winner - #4 (JOHNNY BE QUICK)
12 cents in the dollar for the 2nd place - #3 (DUBLE MEANING)
10 cents in the dollar for the 3rd place - #11 (FRENCH CHARM)

Jockey A Spinks was examined by the ambulance officers and cleared to fulfil his remaining engagements.

FRENCH CHARM – Began awkwardly.

SECRET SUN – Slow to begin.

JOHNNY BE QUCK – Slow to begin.

THELLYSON – Slow to begin.

GLENTURRET – Slow to begin. Raced 3 wide without cover for the majority. A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be lame in the near fore leg. Trainer D. Murphy was advised that a veterinary certificate would be required prior to the gelding racing again.

HERE’S TO LUXURY – Near the 350m was bumped by DUBLE MEANING and became unbalanced. Bumped near the 200m.

DUBLE MEANING – Bumped HERE’S TO LUXURY near the 350m. Bumped near the 200m.


Race 4: Nerang RSL Colts, Geldings & Entires Class 1 H’Cap – 1400m
1st – Bayview Emperor 2nd – Betterthanyouthink 3rd – Old Tex 4th – Asthecourtcommands

ZAMBEZI MOMENT – Bumped on jumping away.

SEEK THE GOLD – Bumped on jumping away.

CAPITANEAR – Slow to begin.

ASTHECOURTCOMMANDS – Held up rounding the home turn and in the early stages of the home straight until a point near the 200m.

LAKE ARGYLE – When questioned as to the performance jockey M. McGuren noted that the gelding was stepping up in distance today and as such he had been instructed to settle it in the second half of the field to ensure that it ran out the 1400m. Jockey McGuren stated that the gelding travelled well in the early and middle stages but failed to improve when placed under pressure passing the 500m and in his opinion was disappointing. A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be lame behind. Trainer S. Tregea was advised that a veterinary clearance would be required prior to the gelding racing again.

BETTERTHANYOUTHINK – Near the 1000m had to be steadied when tightened for room between ASTHECOURTCOMMANDS and OLD TEX, which shifted in. App B. Ainsworth (OLD TEX) was reprimanded. When questioned as to the tactics jockey A. Spinks stated that he was given similar instructions as to the gelding’s previous start, which were to try and obtain a handy position. Jockey Spinks added that at its previous start the gelding was unable to muster early speed despite his efforts and as a result settled further back than expected. Jockey Spinks further added that with the step up in distance today he was again obliged to ride the gelding vigorously in the early stages however, it was able to muster the required speed which resulted in him being able to settle closer to the speed today.


Race 5: Southport RSL QTIS 3YO Colts & Geldings Maiden Plate – 1200m
1st – Havasay 2nd – Cool Sequence 3rd – Lakoudis 4th – Ponty

As jockey J. Hull failed to arrive on course stewards permitted D. Griffin to be substituted as the rider of COOL SEQUENCE.

PONTY and LAKOUDIS, both of which were late arriving on course due to traffic issues, were examined by the veterinary surgeon and cleared to start.

SHARP BIJOU – Near the 1100m had to be steadied when tightened for room between BUS LANE and PONTY, which shifted in. J. Morris (PONTY) was advised to exercise more care.

LAKOUDIS – Passing the 200m was inconvenienced by COOL SEQUENCE, which shifted out under pressure. Held up rounding the home turn.

COOL SEQUENCE – Shifted out under pressure in the home straight.

ARROGANT BOY – Raced 3 wide without cover throughout.

Race 6: Crema Espresso Class 2 H’Cap – 1800m
1st – Cashinko 2nd – Lady Athena 3rd – Whispering Tess 4th – King Willem

BOARDWALK – Slow to begin.

KING WILLEM – Raced 3 wide without cover in the early and middle stages.

CLANGORANDA – Held up rounding the home turn.

HIGH ADVERSITY – Upon returning to scale jockey J. Morris reported he was obliged to ride the horse along in the early stages to take up a forward position however, after settling outside of IN BANGKOK passing the 1500m the horse commenced to overrace and continued to do so for a considerable distance despite his efforts. Jockey Morris was of the view that the horse’s racing manners had a detrimental affect on its performance. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.

IN BANGKOK – Stable representative M. Downes advised that the gelding would be retired following today’s disappointing performance the stable will now review the gelding’s current racing preparation.

Race 7: Edgewater Dining & Lounge Bar Class 5 H’Cap – 1400m
1st – Red Dynamite 2nd – Skating Away 3rd – That’llbgood 4th – Where’s Thatdragon

WHERE’S THATDRAGON – Slow to begin.
PURRVOSA – Inconvenienced by SKATING AWAY near the 1100m and again near the 1000m.

SKATING AWAY – When racing strongly in the early stages improved onto the heels of RED DYNAMITE approaching the 1000m and shifted out and as a result raced wide from that point onwards.

RED DYNAMITE – Raced 3 wide without cover throughout.

BUDGET BENDER - When questioned regarding the performance jockey L. Rolls was unable to offer any tangible explanation for today’s disappointing performance except to say the gelding may have come to the end of its current preparation. Trainer M. Caitabiano stated that the gelding would be sent for a short let up before connections reviewed its future. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.


Race 8: WPIAS Class 2 H’Cap – 1200m
1st – Star Stiletto 2nd – Pompeii Flyer 3rd – Triple Jeopardy 4th – Ole Pablo

WALWA – Hampered on jumping away.

OUT LATE – Hampered on jumping away. Raced 3 wide without cover throughout.

POMPEII FLYER – Held up in the early stages of the home straight.

OLE PABLO – Raced wide throughout.

Jockey K. Stanley (OLE PABLO) was reprimanded for excessive use of the whip prior to the 100m.

LAIKA GORDO – When questioned as to the performance jockey L. Rolls stated that in his opinion the gelding failed to back up from its recent start one week ago. Jockey Rolls was also of the view that the gelding performs best on rain affected surfaces nonetheless he was still disappointed in today’s performance. Trainer B. Hill agreed with the comments of jockey Rolls. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
