Jockey McMahon added that passing the 900m the gelding blundered at which point he considered easing it out of the event over concerns with its action. However, passing the 700m the gelding commenced to improve and rounding the home turn made up ground before being held up in the early stages of the home straight. When questioned as to why he failed to improve between LEPRECHAUN LAD and OUR CLARKY approaching the 100m, he stated that the gelding was hanging in which prevented him from riding it out with his usual vigour. Trainer A Willick stated that at its previous campaign the gelding had begun well and settled in a forward position, however, in the two starts this campaign it had been slow to begin. Ms Willick added that she had removed the blinkers and added earmuffs in an attempt to have the gelding begin well and settle closer and as a result was at a loss to explain the gelding’s performance, particularly in the early and middle stages of the event. Ms Willick undertook to have further veterinary examinations carried out, the results of which she would advise Stewards. In the absence of any abnormalities, the gelding will be required to compete in an official trial to the satisfaction of Stewards. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any apparent abnormalities at the time of examination.

Following the running of this race Jockey D Griffin advised he was unable to fulfil his remaining engagements after being dislodged in Race 1. Stewards permitted rider replacements as per Stewards’ Race Day Summary.
