Tarrant stated that he was given no specific instructions except to make the mare jump with the field as it had previously been slow to begin. App Tarrant added that after beginning on terms with the field he elected to ride the mare forward from the wide barrier, to settle outside the leader. App Tarrant advised that this decision was based on the fact that there was no early speed in the race and as such was reluctant to restrain the mare to obtain cover at the rear of the field. Trainer B. Smith confirmed that no specific were issued and whilst not critical of App Tarrant’s decision to press forward he was of the opinion that the mare is better suited when ridden with cover in the second half of the field. Mr Smith advised he would issue instructions to this affect in future. Following the running of this event the track was upgraded to a Soft 6. DAWN FIGHTER - When questioned as to the performance jockey R. McMahon stated that despite travelling well in the early and middle stages the filly failed to let down when pressured on straightening and proved disappointing. It was established that as the start was effected the gelding lifted its off hind leg which was momentarily caught on the back barrier partition, resulting in it missing the start by a considerable distance. Stewards were satisfied that the gelding’s barrier manners were the result of it missing the start and that it had been afforded a fair start. STORMY DESTINY – Slow to begin. Near the 150m became unbalanced for a short distance when racing in restricted room to the inside of PONTY. At a subsequent inquiry stewards established that STORMY DESTINY obtained a narrow run to the inside of PONTY.
