PILLSBURY LANE – Raced wide throughout.

MURTASTEEL – Stewards questioned jockey R. McMahon regarding his riding over the final 600m.  Jockey McMahon stated that from the wide barrier he was instructed to restrain the gelding to obtain a position towards the rear of the field and from the 600m he elected to shift in and follow SIDERO STAR into the race.  Jockey McMahon added that rounding the home turn he was unable to improve to the inside of SIDERO STAR until straightening, at which point he was able to place the gelding under pressure.  Jockey McMahon further added that, despite his efforts, the gelding was then reluctant to improve into a run between SIDERO STAR and BIG DEAL over the final 150m. Trainer B. Herne confirmed the instructions and was satisfied with jockey McMahon’s riding of the gelding.  Mr Herne noted that the gelding was first up for his stable today and had only been in his care for a period of 3 weeks.  Mr Herne added that connections were satisfied with the performance today.  Stewards advised jockey McMahon that notwithstanding his explanation they were still concerned with his lack of vigour rounding the home turn and over the final 200m but could not be satisfied to the requisite standard that his riding was culpable under the Rules of Racing. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities and a swab sample was taken.

Guthmann-Chester stated that he attempted to improve his position passing the 800m however, SUPPLEMENTS which was racing forward of him failed to take him into the race as anticipated.  App Guthmann-Chester added that  he was unable to shift out to improve passing the 600m as a result of ALFIE JUNIOR, which was weakening, racing to his outside.  Notwithstanding these factors App Guthmann-Chester was disappointed in the gelding’s overall performance as it failed to respond as expected over the final 400m and in his opinion failed to handle today’s wet conditions.

MONT DO LOIR – Raced wide in the early stages.

ALFIE JUNIOR – Rounding the home turn was inconvenienced by THE GOLDEN PIG, which was weakening.

Jockey G. Goold (EXCITEMENT LEVELS) was fined $100 for excessive use of the whip prior to the 100m.   In assessing penalty stewards were mindful of jockey Goold’s exemplary record.
