She stated the horse only travelled fairly in the middle stages however, from the 600m the horse dropped the bit and despite her efforts did not quicken on the turn as anticipated. She added in her opinion the horse was disappointing in not finishing its race off. A post race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings.

RACE 4: Free Entry 30 Dec Colts, Geldings & Entires Class 2 Handicap – 1200m

Stewards considered an objection lodged by J. Byrne the rider of HAPPY HOOVES which finished second against AMENZEL (R. Plumb) being declared the winner on the grounds of alleged interference near the 800m. On the evidence it was established that near the 800m AMENZEL shifted in when barely clear of HAPPY HOOVES, resulting in that horse easing slightly. As stewards were satisfied that the inconvenience suffered by HAPPY HOOVES at that point and the subsequent running of the race did not exceed the half length margin between the 2 horses at the finish the protest was dismissed.

HAPPY HOOVES – Stumbled on jumping.

PRINCE OF TIE – Bounded on jumping.

RACE 6: New Gallery Menu Class 4 Handicap – 1100m

As App A. Sewell was indisposed due to injury stewards permitted App Z. White to be substituted  as the rider of OVERGROWN.

CONNIVING – Connections advised the horse would be ridden midfield if circumstances permit. Inconvenienced near the 800m and ridden midfield but was unable to obtain cover.

OVERGROWN – Steadied near the 800m when overracing.

TROIS CHOIX – Raced 4 wide without cover throughout.

WILD AVA – Stewards questioned jockey J. Byrne as to why he did not avail himself to a run directly in front of him in the early stages of the home straight rather than shifting out around the heels of NARDOO, which resulted in him making contact on 2 occasions with I LIKE CANDY. He stated that whilst he had initially considered improving he was of the view that the track was firmer towards the inside and with the option he took he did so as he was of the view that I LIKE CANDY was weakening and would have allowed his horse clear running. Stewards further questioned jockey Byrne regarding his riding over the concluding stages. After hearing his explanation stewards were satisfied that his riding had not cost him fourth placing however he was reminded of his obligations to ride his mounts right out to the end of the race.

RACE 7: Mint Kleen By Ozkleen BenchMark 65 Handicap – 1800m

Following advice from trainer B. Guy that PLANET AMERICA suffers the affects of a firm track and with the track upgrade to a Good 3 stewards acceded to a request to withdraw the gelding at 2.45 p.m.

WIN ALONG – Slow into stride.

QABLA – Crowded on jumping.

CAPTAIN DODGE – Severely crowded near the 900m and had to be checked when racing to the inside of KURRAJONG DRAGON, which hung in badly despite the efforts of its rider.

BARRAAJ – A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.

KURRAJONG DRAGON – Trainer M. Kropp was advised that a warning would be placed against the racing manners of the gelding.

RACE 8: Become A Member BenchMark 80 Handicap – 1400m

Stewards considered an objection lodged by M. McGillivray the rider of FIRST CRUSH which finished third against HOUDINI THE GREAT (M. Cahill) being declared the second placegetter on the grounds of alleged interference near the 200m. After considering the evidence stewards were of the view that near the 200m HOUDINI THE GREAT and FIRST CRUSH improved into running between BOURBON ROAD and RED LETTER DAY and shortly after RED LETTER DAY shifted out slightly resulting in HOUDINI THE GREAT then making contact on 2 occasions with FIRST CRUSH. As stewards were of the view that any contact between the 2 horses could not be solely attributed to HOUDINI THE GREAT the protest was dismissed.

HOUDINI THE GREAT – Slow to begin. Steadied when crowded near the 600m.
