SOUL SECRETS - Slow to begin. Near the 400m had to be eased when placed in restricted room and was bumped by GO DIXIE.

BACK CHAT - Slow to begin.

IMAY SHOUT - When questioned as to the tactics adopted, Jockey A Allen stated that he was instructed to settle the filly at the rear of the field with cover. Jockey Allen added that the filly was fractious in the barriers and had begun better than he anticipated and a short distance after the start he attempted to restrain the filly to obtain cover behind SOUL SECRETS, however, it failed to respond. Jockey Allen noted that IMAY SHOUT was then caught wide in the early stages at which point he attempted to obtain a position three wide with cover behind EPIC RANT. However, a short distance later EPIC RANT was able to obtain a position one out with cover and when EPIC PIPER strode forward to the lead he was left exposed three wide without cover and subsequently elected to stride forward to settle outside the leader. Trainer R Heathcote confirmed the instructions and expressed his disappointment in the tactics adopted by Jockey Allen in the early stages. Stewards advised Jockey Allen that he had erred in his riding by not immediately restraining IMAY SHOUT after the jump at which point he would have been able to comply with the instructions given, however, Stewards did not believe that Jockey Allen’s error on this occasion was culpable under the Rules of Racing.

GO DIXIE - Held up approaching the home turn and when shifting out to improve leaving the 400m bumped SOUL SECRETS.

EPIC PIPER - Laid out rounding the home turn and in the home straight.

BEAT THE BEAST - A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have bled from both nostrils. The gelding will incur a mandatory three months ban from racing under the provisions of AR53A.

RACE 6: Eric Cowell Memorial BenchMark 65 Handicap- 1800m
1st: Tiarnan 2nd: Galiano 3rd: Skytastic 4th: Gypsy Wild

The announcement of correct weight was delayed to allow Jockey C Whiteley the 2nd placegetter (GALIANO) to view the patrol film to ascertain whether he had grounds to lodge an objection against the winner (TIARNAN) alleging interference in the home straight. After viewing the patrol footage Jockey Whiteley did not wish to proceed with an objection.

Stewards also gave consideration as to whether an objection should be lodged on behalf of the connections of GALIANO, however, they did not believe that the shift in by TIARNAN in the home straight had a material effect on the places and subsequently declared correct weight.

SKYTASTIC - Slow to begin.

SHANDAARA - Near the 1500m had to be steadied when placed in restricted room to the inside of WINDMILL FOLLIES which shifted in. App. J Woodhouse (WINDMILL FOLLIES) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) for permitting his mount to shift in near the 1500m when not sufficiently clear of SHANDAARA which had to be checked and lost ground. App. Woodhouse was suspended from riding in races for a period of 9 days to commence mid. 27.01.2018 to mid. 05.02.2018.

GYPSY WILD - Near the 1500m checked from heels and then over-raced for some distance thereafter. Held up rounding the home turn.

TRIUMPH STAR - Jockey G Colless reported that the gelding raced flat throughout and was disappointing in its inability to finish the race off as expected. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities. When questioned regarding the performance of the gelding stable representative Mr D Moore expressed disappointment with the performance of the gelding today and in his opinion may have come to the end of its preparation. He further added that in light of this he would send the gelding for a short let-up.

PLANET AMERICA – A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have a poor post-race recovery. Trainer B Guy indicated that the gelding is better suited on rain-affected tracks.

RACE 7: Frank Evans Memorial Class 2 Handicap – 1200m
1st: Smashed It 2nd: Exceed All Odds 3rd: Cliodhna 4th: Academy Hill

DISTROYIA - Pulled hard in the preliminary and as a result underwent a veterinary examination prior to the start and was cleared to race. Bumped at the start. Raced wide without cover for the majority of the event.  A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be dehydrated and as a consequence displaying a poor post-race recovery.

VICTORY DANCE - Slow to begin. App. S Lacy reported that the horse failed to stretch out on today’s firm surface.

TENNESSEE FLING - Began awkwardly.

TEMUJINS MOON - Began awkwardly.

WINDCATCHER - Bumped at the start.

DISPEL – Bumped by ACADEMY HILL near the 400m and was again hampered by that same runner passing the 200m.

SMASHED IT – Jockey G Colless attempted to restrain the gelding when headed by EXCEED ALL ODDS leaving the 900m, however, it failed to settle and then raced fiercely during the middle stages of the event.

EXCEED ALL ODDS – When questioned as to the tactics adopted, Jockey A Allen stated that from the wide barrier he was obliged to pressure the gelding in the early stages to obtain a forward position. Once he obtained a position outside of SMASHED IT, Jockey Allen attempted to restrain the gelding at which point it continued to race strongly despite his efforts resulting in him having to obtain another hold on his reins leaving the 700m. Jockey Allen stated that his intention during the middle stages was to sit back off SMASHED IT, however, the gelding refused to settle. Stewards accepted the explanation.

RACE 8: Past Heroes of Racing Class 1 Handicap – 1400m
1st: Shaolin Kingfu 2nd: Tycoon Rossa 3rd: Beerinawineglass 4th: Nothingforthepress

As Jockey M Bennett was stood down by the club doctor, he was replaced on MASTER DAME by Jockey C Whiteley.

MASTER DAME – Connections advised that the mare would be ridden forward from the wide alley if possible. Ridden accordingly.

SNOOPER - Bumped at the start.

BEERINAWINEGLASS - Bumped at the start.

CHARMING PRINCE - Began awkwardly and a short distance later was subsequently hampered and lost ground. When questioned as to the tactics adopted in leading by a considerable margin, Jockey S Bogenhuber stated that her instructions were to settle the gelding as close as possible to the speed. Ms Bogenhuber noted that when the gelding was successful three starts ago, it had led. As a consequence, after striking interference in the early stages she placed the gelding under pressure in an attempt to obtain a forward position. When caught wide passing the 1200m she allowed her mount to continue to stride forward before obtaining the lead leaving the 1100m.  Ms Bogenhuber noted that from that point she attempted to restrain the gelding, however, it refused to settle despite her efforts and continued to over-race throughout the middle stages of the event which had a detrimental effect on its finishing performance.  Stewards noted the explanation.

FRENCH DESCENT - Checked shortly after the start and lost ground.

BEACON STREET - Severely hampered shortly after the start and lost ground.

TYCOON LAYLA - Approaching the 1000m placed in restricted room to the inside of MASTER DAME which shifted in and in doing so made contact with the running rail and lost ground.

WAKE UP VICTA - Raced wide without cover throughout. Near the 200m hampered by BEERINAWINEGLASS (L Tilley) which shifted out. Jockey L Tilley (BEERINAWINEGLASS) was reprimanded for shifting out when insufficiently clear.

CAVIAR GIRL - Raced wide throughout.

Stewards inquired into the interference suffered by CHARMING PRINCE, FRENCH DESCENT and BEACON STREET shortly after the start.  After taking evidence from the riders involved, it was established that after beginning awkwardly MASTER DANE received a bump from CAVIAR GIRL resulting in MASTER DAME being forced inwards which resulted in varying degrees of interference to those three horses.  Stewards could not be satisfied that the interference suffered by those runners was solely attributable to Jockey C Whiteley as the rider of MASTER DAME.
