GENERAL

Racing Queensland advised amended start times for Races 1 and 2 were as follows:-

Race 1. 12.28 p.m.
Race 2. 1.05 p.m.

As J. Taylor was injured Stewards permitted rider changes as per the Stewards Race Day Summary.

Race 1 –  We Are Gold Coast Benchmark 80 Handicap – 1800m

GO DIXIE - Stable representative for S. Morrisey advised the intention would be for the horse to be ridden with cover today if circumstances permit. Inclined to overrace in the early and middle stages when attempting to trail the leader.

Race 2 – RBC Group QTIS 3YO Maiden Handicap – 900m

SOMEBODY’S GIRL – Fractious in the barriers and then began awkwardly.

JET A ONE – Began awkwardly and shifted in making heavy contact with RAKU’S SECRET. Raced three wide with cover until approaching the home turn and then raced wide rounding the home turn. Laid in under pressure over the final 200m.

RAKU’S SECRET – Bumped heavily by JET A ONE on jumping and was then crowded for room between that runner and SOMEBODY’S GIRL. Approaching the 300m improved onto the heels of DANITES, had to be steadied and alter course to the outside to obtain clear running.

APACHE LIL – Approaching the 800m put in an awkward stride.

DANITES – Raced three wide joint leader and then hung out rounding the home turn.

Following the running of this event the track was upgraded to a Good 3.

Race 3 – RBC Group Class 4 Plate – 1100m

As R. Plumb was overweight Stewards permitted A. Chau to be substituted as the rider of WILL’S BID. Jockey Plumb was fined $200.

INKBLOT - After arriving late on course a pre-race swab sample was taken. Bumped on jumping and crowded for room. Lost an off fore plate in running.

WILL’S BID – Fractious in the gates and then bumped on jumping.

ELIXIR – Began awkwardly and shifted in.

USURP – Raced keenly when positioned outside the leader in the early and middle stages. Passing the 300m laid in and became awkwardly placed at the heels of JINX ‘N’ DRINX.

Race 4 – Cooper Maloy Legal Class 3 Handicap – 1400m

BRADBURY – Slow to begin.

THE IRONS – Began awkwardly.

MERRIMEN – After being crossed by LIGREB in the early stages commenced to overrace and brushed the running rail approaching the 900m and proved difficult to restrain.

POOR CORNER – After passing the 900m commenced to hang in and proved difficult to ride and then shortly after straightening commenced to weaken and finished a distant last. A post race veterinary examination revealed to gelding to be showing a poor post race recovery. Trainer B. Guy was of the opinion that the gelding did not appreciate today’s firm surface and is more suited to softer tracks.

MISS AMBER – Approaching the 400m was forced wider on the course by POOR CORNER, which was taken out by MERRIMEN, which shifted out to improve.

LOLA’S DIAMOND – Lost the off hind plate in running.

LIGREB – When asked to comment on the performance App L. Kilner explained her instructions were to sit handy with cover if possible however, if there was no speed connections would be satisfied for her to take the lead without applying pressure. App Kilner further explained that the mare had a reasonable run in the middle stages although POOR CORNER had applied some pressure in the middle stages and in her opinion the mare was not overly disappointing. App Kilner was also of the opinion that the mare may be better suited when ridden with cover and possibly may not have run out a strong 1400m of today’s event. Stewards noted the explanation.

Race 5 – AC-TECH Colts, Geldings & Entires Maiden Handicap – 1100m

The start was initially delayed when POET LAD proved difficult to load. Co-trainer W. Hulbert was advised that the gelding would require a further barrier certificate prior to racing again.

The start was further delayed when MONTEZ after being loaded got its off hind leg up in the barrier, was removed, examined by the veterinary surgeon and cleared to start.

HOT GAMBLER – Began awkwardly and shifted out abruptly. Unable to muster speed in the early stages of the event and finished at the rear of the field. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities. Trainer H. Page advised that in her opinion the gelding was not suited to the distance of today’s event and it would now be her intention to step the gelding up in distance for its future starts.

KING’S EXPRESS – Rounding the home turn was disappointed for a run to the outside of ESPANYOL and to the inside of ALEXANDRA ROAD. Approaching the 200m raced in restricted room for a short distance and laid in when placed under pressure.

ALEXANDRA ROAD – Raced three wide without cover throughout.

MONTEZ - When questioned regarding the seemingly improved performance trainer Ms M. Brosnan stated that the gelding was having its first start for the stable today. Ms Brosnan further added that the gelding had been working well, including a recent trial behind a promising horse and with some gear changes for today expected a forward showing. Stewards noted the explanation.

Race 6 – TFH Hire Fillies & Mares Maiden Handicap – 1100m

The start was slightly delayed when FLATTER and HAWAIIAN GEM both proved difficult to load.

VINASTA – Began awkwardly and bumped DEPENDABLE NITE.

DEPENDABLE NITE – Bumped on jumping and became unbalanced. Shortly afterwards had to be steadied when awkwardly placed at the heels of XUANNU, which shifted out.

HAWAIIAN GEM – Began awkwardly, made contact with the barrier partition and lost ground.

Race 7 – Short Punch & Greatorix Benchmark 60 Handicap – 2200m

As M. Palmer was overweight Stewards permitted J. Woodhouse to be substituted as the rider of LA FIREBIRD. Jockey Palmer was fined $100. In determining penalty Stewards were mindful of his exemplary record in regards to this Rule.

The start was significantly delayed due to mechanical issues with the tractor attached to the barriers.

LA FIREBIRD – Slow to begin.

NORDIC SHOW – Slow to begin.

ROCK ON HIGH – Slow to begin. A post race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be lame in the near hind leg, the mare was treated by the on course veterinary surgeon and referred to the Gold Coast Equine Centre for further examination. Trainer D. Dobbin was advised that the mare would require a veterinary clearance prior to racing again.

MOMENTUM TO WIN – Passing the winning post on the first occasion raced three wide without cover until being restrained and able to obtain cover in a midfield position passing the 1600m.

ROMAN DOLL – Passing the winning post on the first occasion was four wide before being allowed to stride forward to take up a position outside the leader passing the 1400m.

CATCH ME LATAR – Passing the 1000m improved onto the heels of MOMENTUM TO WIN and had to shift wider on the course. Shortly afterwards was allowed to stride forward three wide before joining the leaders approaching the home turn.

ROULETTE ROYAL – Shifted three wide passing the 800m to improve.

HEART OF TOORAK – Passing the 300m improved onto the heels of PHANTOM SHADOW and altered course back to the inside to secure clear running.
