QUIERO – N. Tomizawa explained that the instructions were to lead if possible. He said the gelding showed sufficient early speed, however ARGO’S REVENGE also improved to his inside, resulting in him having to make more use of the gelding than he would have liked. He said at its previous start the horse was inclined to overrace and hang out and for this reason he was intent on pursuing the lead and getting the horse across to the rails. He added that the horse then travelled nicely in front and weakened over the concluding stages. He said that in hindsight he would have preferred not having to make as much use of QUIERO as he did in the early stages.

XYLOPHONE – L. Dittman explained that in the early stages he was content with the position outside of MARINE CORPS, however that horse elected to race one off the fence and then was taken three wide when ABLE ENGINE shifted away from the rail near the 1100m. He added that the gelding was inclined to lay out throughout and he was reluctant to restrain unnecessarily to get a trailing position behind ABLE ENGINE and felt the horse was comfortable racing in the position that it did. He said XYLOPHONE dropped the bit on the home turn, however finished its race off nicely, but in his opinion the horse will be better suited by stepping up in distance.

SCHWARZY – Slow into stride.

Race 3: CHANNEL 7 F&M CLASS 1 H'CAP – 1200M

JOMAR SAGA – Slow into stride. A post-race veterinary examination revealed lameness in the off foreleg. Connections were advised that the horse will require a veterinary clearance prior to racing again.

ENTERPRISE ROSIE – Had to be restrained whilst overracing near the 1000m, resulting in the mare racing three wide for the majority of the event.

SHES AN EAGER LASS – Overraced in the early stages, inconvenienced near the 900m and raced three wide with cover.

Following the running of this event the track was upgraded to GOOD 3.

Race 5: RAY WHITE IPSWICH CLASS 3 PLATE – 1666M

BALTIC PRINCE – Steadied near the 500m when crowded for room between INDELO, which was hanging out badly, and DAVOR, which shifted in after being bumped on the hind quarter. Hung in badly in the home straight.

DAVOR – Shifted in near the 500m when bumped on the hind quarter.

INDELO – Overraced in the early and middle stages. Hung out badly from the 1200m. A warning was placed on the gelding’s racing manners.

KERMANDIE STAR – Slow into stride and then clipped heels and dipped shortly after the start.

JOURNALIST – Lost the near fore plate in running.

SCARLETT HUSSIE – Slow into stride. Rider A. Allen reported to stewards that approaching the 400m, as he felt that there may have been something amiss with the mare, he elected to stop pressuring his mount at that stage. He added, though, once he had entered the home straight the mare commenced to improve and therefore he continued to ride for the remainder of the event.

CELESTIAL GREY – Raced three wide throughout.

Race 6: XXXX CLASS 6 PLATE – 1100M

JOMAR’S ELEMENT – Began very awkwardly, shifted out abruptly and became badly unbalanced. Lost the off fore plate in running. When questioned regarding his riding, R. Plumb explained the instructions from the stable representative were that the horse races best when allowed to find the lead on the rail. He said the horse was very restless in its stall and was standing awkwardly and when the gates were released it then jumped very awkwardly, shifted out abruptly and was turned on the hind quarters. He said despite this he was intent on carrying out his instructions and therefore rode hard in the early stages to endeavour to find the lead. He said after the 800m he was of the view that ZENDAYE would hand up the lead, however when he became aware that this was not going to occur, he then had to allow his mount to travel and race outside ZENDAYE. He said because of the run the gelding had in the early stages, in the straight it weakened and hung out badly. Trainer R. Heathcote’s stable representative, Mr M. O’Leary, said that the specific instructions from the trainer were to endeavour to lead and find the rail. He added that after the race, when speaking with Mr Heathcote, who expressed satisfaction with the way in which the horse was ridden, he was advised that JOMAR’S ELEMENT would be sent for an immediate spell. Mr O’Leary was advised that the instructions were too specific, particularly bearing in mind the way in which the horse began and had to be ridden to endeavour to find the lead. Jockey Plumb was advised that stewards were of the view that he overdid the instructions and that he had clearly erred by not restraining sooner than he did when he became aware that he was going to be unable to cross ZENDAYE.

WELL SIGHTED – Slipped over after being fractious in its tie-up stall, examined by the veterinary surgeon and passed fit to start.

Race 7: CITY OF IPSWICH CLASS 2 PLATE – 1350M

BEAU ISA – Trainer D. Duryea was questioned regarding the horse’s seemingly improved performance. She said at the horse’s last start, in her opinion it did not run out the 2200m raced on a soft track. She said prior to that the horse had also been similarly unsuited with the tempo in which those races were run. She added that the horse is one which gets back in its races and that it needs to be niggled along to remain on the bit. She said she had been somewhat dissatisfied with the recent rides on the horse and specifically instructed its rider today, back over a suitable distance, to ensure the horse was kept on the bit. She advised that she would endeavour to restrict BEAU ISA to races of a similar distance before maybe stepping it up in distance later in its preparation.

FLEURIEU – Slow into stride.

Race 8: THE QLD TIMES C,G&E CLASS 1 H'CAP – 1200M
