SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT

Race 2- IPSWICH - Saturday 22nd June 2024

Stewards today (1st July, 2024) concluded an inquiry into an incident from Race 2 at Ipswich 22nd June 2024 where TUKI TWELVE clipped heels, fell and dislodged it Jockey S. Collett approaching the home turn. Jockey M. Du Plessis, rider of LEATHER JACKET LEW, was found guilty of careless riding pursuant to AR131(a) in that leaving the 500m he elected to shift away from the rail, to a one-off position which provided sufficient racing room for TUKI TWELVE, ridden by S. Collett, to improve to his inside. Shortly thereafter near the 400m, after becoming awkwardly placed on the heels of TAVIELASS, ridden by Apprentice C.Waddell, Jockey Du Plessis then elected to ride his mount along and permitted it to shift in, tightening the rightful racing room of TUKI TWELVE, causing it to clip the heels of LEATHER JACKET LEW which resulted in TUKI TWELVE falling and dislodging Jockey S. Collett. Jockey Du Plessis’s license to ride in races was suspended for 18 days commencing midnight the 1st July 2024 and to expire midnight 19th July 2024.

Race 6 - DOOMBEN - Wednesday 14th February 2024

Stewards resumed an inquiry on the 3rd of July 2024 into an incident which occurred shortly after passing the winning post in Race 6 at Doomben on the 14th of February 2024, where KING OF THE DESERT clipped heels, blundered, dislodging its Jockey W. D’Avila who was treated by QAS Officials before being transported to hospital for further observations. After taking initial evidence on the day from Jockey K. Wilson-Taylor (MAXCALEMA), Jockey A. Jones (GOLDEEL), Jockey S. Collett (WHISTLING SPIRIT) and Jockey R. Maloney (PATTON), the inquiry was adjourned until 3/7/24, to enable Jockey W. D’Avila, rider of KING OF THE DESERT, to be present.

Stewards after considering the evidence tendered by all riders and on review of the film noted that leading up to the incident, KING OF THE DESERT was commencing to weaken and slowly losing ground, whilst GOLDEEL (A. Jones), WHISTLING SPIRIT (S. Collett) and PATTON (R. Maloney) were all shifting down the track towards the rail to varying degrees thus causing the racing room available to KING OF THE DESERT to narrow. Stewards noted that whilst MAXCALEMA (K. Wilson-Taylor) had improved into a permissible run to the inside of KING OF THE DESERT leading up to the incident, the gelding did shift away from the rail approaching the turn out of the straight which ultimately resulted in its heels being contacted by KING OF THE DESERT causing Jockey W. D’Avila to be dislodged. Jockey D’Avila also noted that whilst his mount was tiring, he felt that it also shifted ground slightly which may have contributed to the incident. Stewards when assessing the incident in its entirety could not attribute blame to any rider and noted the incident.

STROMA ASTER – Slow to begin. Stewards queried App M. Potgieters riding of the gelding, specifically his apparent lack of vigour in the early stages of the home straight when an ample run appeared to present between ARIK LAD and CHASING POINT. App Potgieter stated that his instructions were to be positive from the barriers and obtain a forward position, however when the gelding was slow to begin, elected to ride more conservatively obtaining a rearward position near the inside running rail. On entering the home straight, when a run did not present to the inside of ARIK LAD, App Potgieter elected to shift to the outside of that runner to obtain clear running, adding his apparent lack of vigour was merely an effort to permit his mount to balance-up sufficiently after rounding the home turn. App Potgieter stated further that, with the benefit of hindsight, he would have been better positioned to have persisted with attempting to obtain a run to the inside of ARIK LAD rounding the turn and entering the home straight. Stewards noted App Potgieters comments and intend to review betting records in relation to the event.
