Race 1: BENCHMARK 65 Handicap 1450 metres
LE FORCE – Shifted in on jumping and bumped JUST SIZZLING who was taken in onto COUNT MICHELIN.
FINGERTIPS – When asked to comment on the performance of the gelding, jockey R. Faehr stated that although the gelding jumped well, his mount resented the kick back and is coming to the end of it’s prep. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no visible abnormalities. Trainer Mr. J. Bawden advised the gelding would now be sent for a spell.
ONTHETAKE – Dipped on jumping away and shifted out.
COUNT MICHELIN – Was tightened at the start by JUST SIZZLING who was carried in by LE FORCE and ONTHETAKE who shifted out. Raced wide with cover for the majority. When placed under pressure in the straight, was disappointing. When questioned jockey J. Babrovich stated that from the 800m he became concerned with the gelding’s action. A post-race veterinary examination revealed mild lameness in the near foreleg. Trainer Mr K. Krogh was advised that COUNT MICHELIN will require a veterinary clearance prior to racing again.
JUST SIZZLING – On jumping away was carried in by LE FORCE who shifted in. Raced wide without cover for the majority.
Race 2: BENCHMARK 55 Handicap 1000 metres
SCARPA – Raced wide without cover for the majority.
LOGOMANIA – Raced wide with cover throughout.
SOGNI – Declared a late scratching on veterinary advice at 14.21pm after becoming fractious in the barriers. Trainer Ms T. Parry was advised that SOGNI must obtain a further barrier certificate and a veterinary clearance prior to racing again. Prior to the declaration of correct weight, Stewards ordered that all bets placed on SOGNI are to be refunded with the following deductions to apply:
1st KARBORS – 8c win, 10c place.
2nd SPURCIFIC JOURNEY– 10c place.
SPURCIFIC JOURNEY – Raced wide without cover for the majority.
Race 3: QTIS Maiden Plate 1200 metres
BEAU EPOCH – Laid in under pressure in the straight. In the vicinity of the 100 m, became awkward in its action. Following the running of this race, BEAU EPOCH was found to be severely lame in its near foreleg. The gelding was subsequently transported for further examination, whereby it was confirmed that BEAU EPOCH had sustained a fracture to the near foreleg. Acting on veterinary advice, the gelding was euthanised. A post-mortem blood sample was taken for analysis. Stewards adjourned an inquiry into the preceding circumstances and intend to question Jockey G. Walters regarding his riding of BEAU EPOCH over the concluding stages of today’s event.
BIRDIE BELLE – Dipped on jumping. Hung out throughout. A post-race veterinary examination revealed an increased heart rate.
CRACKLE CAUSE – Awkward to begin and shifted out. Raced wide without cover throughout.
Race 4: OPEN Handicap 1200 metres
Correct weight was delayed to allow jockey T. Leslight the rider of ANCIENT ECHOES to view the photo finish for 2nd place. Once satisfied, correct weight was declared on the Judge’s semaphored numbers.
CATO – Jumped away awkwardly and shifted out bumping FACTORY WARRIOR.
FACTORY WARRIOR – Shortly after the start, was obliged to race in restricted room when carried out by CATO.
FAVRA – Jumped away awkwardly and shifted in bumping CAFFREY.
CAFFREY – Shortly after the start, was obliged to race in restricted room when FAVRA shifted in and FACTORY WARRIOR was carried out by CATO.
ANCIENT ECHOES – Apprentice T. Leslight reported at scale that he allowed his mount to race wide without cover throughout, as it resented the kickback and was travelling well. Raced wide without cover for the majority. Inclined to lay in during the middle stages. Apprentice T. Leslight was fined $500 pursuant to AR132(7)(a)(ii) for using his whip on 7 occasions prior to the 100 m – 2 more than permitted.
Race 5: CLASS B Handicap 1200m
CAMPEEDO – Began awkwardly and shifted out. Raced wide without cover throughout.
DOUBLE OH SEVEN – Approaching the 600 m momentarily bumped with MA BELLA ROSIE.
MA BELLA ROSIE – Approaching the 600 m, momentarily bumped with DOUBLE OH SEVEN.
GULF OF AQABA – Raced wide without cover for the majority. Laid in under pressure in the straight.
NASA – Dipped on jumping.
HOLLYWOOD SCANDAL – Raced wide without cover throughout.
