GENERAL Rider Brendon Newport was fined $200 under AR 218(4)(b) for having his mobile phone in his possession in the jockey’s room after commencing his riding engagements. In assessing penalty, stewards were satisfied that upon inspection, Mr Newport had not used his phone for a considerable amount of time prior to the meeting commencing. Race 1: BOOK A TABLE FOR CAULFIELD CUP NOW Maiden Handicap1300 metres GULF OF SIDRA – Slow to begin. Laid out under pressure in the home straight. Rider Adrian Layt was reprimanded under AR 132(7)(a)(ii) for applying the whip on seven occasions prior to the 100m, two more than permitted. IMARA – Inconvenienced and carried inwards near the 400m when DEVIL KICK shifted in. Apprentice M. Castle (the rider of DEVIL KICK) was reprimanded for careless riding under AR131(a). REGAL FIELD – Slow to begin. Shifted outwards under pressure over the final 300m. Rider Chris Whiteley was at a loss to explain the disappointing performance of the mare. DEVIL KICK – Bumped on a number of occasions with SUPER ROOSTER approaching and leaving the 1100. Raced greenly over the concluding stages. Apprentice Melea Castle was fined $200 pursuant to AR132(7)(a)(ii) for using her whip on nine occasions prior to the 100m, four more than permitted. FRAZZLED – Steadied off the heels of DEVIL KICK at the 1200m. Held up for clear running rounding the home turn and into the early part of the home straight before shifting out at the 500m to obtain clear running. KURU LASS – Slow to begin. SUPER ROOSTER – Raced keenly during the early and middle stages. Bumped on a number of occasions with DEVIL KICK approaching and leaving the 1100. Race 2: BECOME A CLUB 150 MEMBER QTIS Three-Year-Old Handicap 1200 metres BETTERDEEL – Rider Justin Stanley was fined $200 under AR 132(7)(a)(ii) for applying his whip on 8 occasions prior to the 100m, three more than is permitted. EXECUTIVE STRESS – Slow to begin. BONAUGURA – Raced three wide early stages. CRAIGLEA AGENA – Over raced during the early and middle stages. Laid in under pressure over the final 400m. NAUGHTY POSSUM – Slow to begin. Race 3: GREAT NORTHERN OPEN Handicap 1100 metres AHOOSHU – Over raced for a short distance leaving the 900m. JAY JAY – After being tightened for room on jumping, lost ground and settled further back than anticipated. COLD HARD FACT – Began awkwardly. AVOCADO SUNSET – Jumped awkwardly then shifted outwards bumping JAY JAY. Commenced to weaken from the 500m. Rider Nathan Day advised that the gelding travelled well until being placed under pressure in the home straight and failed to respond from that point onwards. Trainer Jared Wehlow advised that the gelding appeared to recover well and an assessment regarding AVOCADO SUNSET’S racing future would be made in consultation with the owners. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any apparent abnormalities. Race 4: CAULFIELD CUP 15 OCTOBER BENCHMARK 55 Handicap 1600 metres TONTEIN – Jumped outwards contacting the barrier partition. Rider Brendon Newport was reprimanded under AR 132(7)(a)(ii) for applying the whip on seven occasions prior to the 100m, two more than permitted. TRICKY BEANS – Shifted outwards under pressure over the final 400m and weakened over the final 300m. Rider Chris Whiteley explained that the gelding failed to travel well and, in his view, raced flat. Trainer Kerrod Smyth advised that he felt the horse had come to an end of its preparation and would be sent for a spell. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any apparent abnormalities. MATADOR – Fractious in the barriers prior to the start. Held up for clear running in the early part of the home straight. Had to shift outwards across heels leaving the 350m to obtain clear running. Rider Ryan Wiggins was fined $500 under AR 132(7)(a)(ii) for applying the whip on 6 occasions prior to the 100m, one more than permissible. In assessing penalty, stewards took into account Mr Wiggin’s recent extremely poor record of 10 prior offences within the past six months. KNOWITALL JACK (NZ) – Raced three wide early before obtaining the lead at the 1200m. MARTO – Jumped awkwardly. STAR OF LEON – Held up for clear running over the final 400m. PHOENIX FLYER – Shifted inwards leaving the 400m. MASAWU – Leaving the 400m, raced in restricted room and had to be steadied when PHEONIX FLYER, which was racing to the outside, shifted inwards and TRICKY BEANS, which was racing to the inside, shifted out when giving ground. Race 5: HAPPY 20TH BIRTHDAY SHIKIRA Class 1 Handicap 1300 metres HIGHGROUND – Bumped on jumping. KICK ON COMMAND – Raced keenly in the early stages. Bumped on jumping. Held up for clear running until leaving the 400m. Hung in under pressure over the final 400m. KNIGHT'S SWORD – Raced keenly for a distance near the 900m. TOY WHITTY – Fractious prior to the start. SIMON SAYS – Slow to begin. GABRIELLE – Bumped and tightened for room on jumping. Bumped heavily near the 700m. MOTHERLODE – Bumped on jumping. Shifted out near the 700m making contact with GABRIELLE. Laid out rounding the home turn and was steadied off the heels of GABRIELLE. Apprentice Melea Castle was fined $300 pursuant to AR132(7)(a)(ii) for using her whip on six occasions prior to the 100m, one more than permitted. Race 6: LIKE US ON FACEBOOK Class 3 Plate 1100 metres BOOM BOOM BECKER – Hung out under pressure in the home straight. FIGHT IN THE DOG – Over raced during the early stages and hung in near the 900m checking SANTORINI SUMMER. Raced ungenerously throughout. Trainer R. Hay was advised a warning would be placed in the runner. SANTORINI SUMMER – Checked near the 900m. Held up for clear running for the majority of the home straight until obtaining clear running inside the final 100m. CHESTO'S DREAM – Raced keenly during the middle stages. Held up for a clear run rounding the home turn.JUNGLE BEAT – Jumped awkwardly and was slow to begin. WHOA LOLA – Slow to begin and checked at the start. MORICONI – Jumped inwards at the start checking WHOA LOLA. Race 7: TAB BENCHMARK 70 Handicap 1400 metres DARK ARCHER – Reared at the start and was slow to begin. GALAPAGOS – Slow to begin. Forced wider and was checked near the 500m when TENNESSEE WHISKEY shifted outwards. EMMA'S JET – Three wide throughout and restrained to a rearward position near the 1000m. ROADHOUSE – Severely checked from heels and blundered near the 500m when GALAPAGOS was forced outwards by TENESSEE WHISKEY. Jockey Nathan Day (the rider of TENESSEE WHISKEY) was found guilty of a charge of reckless riding under AR131(a), in that at the 500m he directed his mount outwards and after making contact with GALAPAGOS continued to ride outwards carrying GALAPAGOS even wider, resulting in ROADHOUSE being checked, clipping heels and blundering. Jockey Day’s license to ride in races was suspended for 4 weeks to commence at midnight 9th August 2022 and conclude at midnight the 6th of September 2022. TENNESSEE WHISKEY – Raced keenly for a distance near the 900m. Held up for a clear run in the early part of the home straight. Shifted out near the 500m forcing GALAPAGOS outwards. Stewards inquired into a complaint from rider Tasha Chambers after the running of this race regarding the manner of which trainer Olivia Cains spoke to her in the mounting yard on return to scale. After considering the lack of substantiated evidence stewards could not be satisfied that either party had conducted themselves in a manner that warranted a charge being issued. Both Ms Chambers and Ms Cairns were advised that they are to ensure that they do not engage in conduct that reflects poorly on the industry or breaches the expected standards.
