Race 4: Kalinga Valley Park Thoroughbreds Class 3 Plate – 1000m

FALCHION – As R. Wiggins’s arrival was delayed due to transport difficulties, A. Allen was substituted as the rider of the horse.

TUSCAN FALLS – Stewards questioned jockey D. Browne regarding the performance and tactics adopted on the gelding. Of particular concern were his actions after the 600m when it appeared he had opportunity to shift wider on the track to improve, and his reasons for failing to take that option, and also after entering the home straight his apparent failure to ride vigorously to secure a run between BEST DANCE YET and MURDER OF CROWS before MURDER OF CROWS shifted out and he was obliged to shift back to the inside, which resulted in him being held up and unable to secure clear running over the final 200m. Jockey Browne explained that BEST DANCE YET, which he was following near the 600m, had begun to shift away from the fence and he was of the view he would be able to improve inside that horse and trail BOBBY BE GOOD. However near the 500m BEST DANCE YET shifted in slightly, resulting in him being placed in an awkward position to the inside of that horse’s heels, and that approaching the 400m, MURDER OF CROWS shifted out, causing him to be taken out across the heels of BEST DANCE YET, and he was obliged to steady. He then explained he considered pressing for a run between those 2 runners approaching the 350m however he was of the view that MURDER OF CROWS had commenced to shift out further and he therefore elected to steady and go back to the inside. He accepted in hindsight he had erred in improving to the inside of BEST DANCE YET. Stewards agreed that this had been an error of judgement and also were quite critical of his failure to attempt to secure a run in the early stages of the home straight. A post race veterinary examination revealed lameness in the off hind leg. Connections were advised that a veterinary clearance must be provided prior to its next race start.

Browne indicated he was disappointed with the performance after being satisfied with the position he had taken up in the early stages, and when the leader quickened near the 500m he was immediately under pressure and the horse did not finish the race off as anticipated.

Race 6: Vantage Homes Maiden H'cap – 1400m

SLAUGHTER BAY – After being held up in traffic, underwent a veterinary examination and cleared to take its place in the field.

PIPPOS - After being held up in traffic, underwent a veterinary examination and cleared to take its place in the field. Slow to begin. Stewards asked apprentice C. Dell to comment on the performance. He indicated that the horse was slow to begin and he was forced to ride his mount further back in the field than he would have liked and was also obliged to pressure the horse from the 700m and despite this the horse responded to his riding over the final 300m and was doing its best work over the concluding stages. He indicated the horse would appreciate the step up to 1600m.

LORD DARIUS – Bumped its near-side hip when entering the saddling enclosure. A subsequent veterinary examination cleared the horse to start. The horse lost its near hind plate and when this plate was unable to be replaced, the off side plate was removed and the horse was permitted to race barefoot behind. Hung out from the 800m. A warning was placed on the horse’s overall performance as it weakened badly in the home straight.

GODZONE GIRL – Buffetted by another runner passing the 300m.

EXEMPTION – Buffetted by another runner passing the 300m. Raced wide.

KEEP ON ROCKING/BIANIC - Tightened for room approaching the 200m between runners and had to be severely checked. Stewards inquired into the circumstances of this incident and were satisfied that GODZONE GIRL after being interfered with earlier in the straight, shifted in and away from EXEMPTION despite the efforts of its rider, causing interference to runners to the inside.

GET ON – Stewards interviewed trainer T. Thomas regarding the performance. He indicated at the horse’s most recent start it had been a long time between runs and he had freshened the horse up in order to start the horse over the distance of 1200m. He added the horse had some difficulty securing clear running at this start and he was not surprised by the forward showing in today’s event when stepped up to 1600m.
